SURF'S UP!A three-hour walk fromAbraao through dense vege-tation, Praia Lopes Mendesis an extensive beach on theNorth side of Ilha Grande,extremely popular for itsperfect surf and climate. Iwasn't ready for a surfinglesson yet, but feeling semi-

adventurous I did hire abodyboard and rode thewaves for about an hour. Allthat walking and body-boarding had ensured I wasnot going to walk backanother three hours, so Itook the easier option - aboat ride back to the southof the island, clinging on to

dear life as the boat rockedagainst the strong, wobbly wavesof the open seas.

Returning back to Abraao foranother night of debauchery - asalways, including great food, theamazing caipirinha (caipivodkawith cachacha instead of vodka)and a street forro party!

REMOTE BUT RIVETTINGOn my third and final day on theisland, I took the trekking fartherand visited Caxadaco beach,which is a seven-hour trek backto base. This is perhaps theremotest but most wondrousbeach of Ilha Grande - the cove isso enclosed that it almost feelslike a lake, with just a small, per-haps less than 200 meter open-ing, into the sea.

As I looked back at the majes-tic island from the catamaran,preparing to head to the maincoast town of Conceicao de Jacarei, I made a promise that Iwould return. Of course I kept it.Twice!
