Some stories are a joy to share. The creation of the Emens College-Commu-

nity Auditorium is one of those. It is really not my story, but more accurately tells the saga of a need, a visionary and a supportive community. In many ways this place is the shining example of what can be achieved when the people of Ball State University and Muncie join forces for positive change. It started with a dynamic leader, Presi-dent John R. Emens, who had the foresight to recognize that this growing campus as well as our city would benefit if a per-formance venue could be conceived and developed. This concert Hall would be a home to the Muncie Symphony Orchestra. This state of the art performance venue would host national and international art-ists, Broadway productions, dance compa-nies, major speakers and serve as a convo-cation center for many university functions.

The sum of 3 million dollars was needed to fulfill the vision and the University could fund only one half of that figure. The com-munity rose to the occasion, pledging over 1.5 million dollars to this endeavor. I am told that the fund drive to build Emens Audito-rium was the very first capital campaign for Ball State University. Without this outpour-ing of support from businesses, organiza-tions and individuals, the dream would not have become a reality. This showplace has functioned as a cultural epicenter, where great performanc-es and convocations regularly occur. The presence of a venue that can host world- renowned talent changes the equation regarding the local quality of life, as well as provides a positive economic impact for our community. The rest of our story is still to be written. We envision Emens Auditorium touching

the lives of every person in Delaware County, anticipate that this facility and the efforts of the staff will further expand cultural opportunities and enhance the learning environment for students at Ball State University. The prospect of commis-sioning new work and extended residency activity of artists could have tremendous impact for both the campus and communi-ty. We aim to build upon the tradition of the first half a century and facilitate growth in a program that Muncie continues to cherish. We welcome you to celebrate with us as we embark on our 50th season.

a vibrant violinNo Boundaries The work of Julie Borden features compelling expressions of color. This stunning “painted” violin (cover) hints at a fascinating dichotomy of tradi-tional craftsmanship and contemporary art. One can imagine the contrast of classical music to pop culture as well. The rich jux-taposition is symbolic of my programmatic objective. We aspire to present a diverse array of live cultural experiences intended to match the varied preferences of our pa-trons. In this our 50th season, the painted violin personifies the diversity of perfor-mance characteristic of Emens Auditorium.

Here Come the Mummies It’s been a long and dusty road since 1922 when, at a dig in the desert south of Tunis, Professor Nigel Quentin Fontenelle Dumblucke IV (1895-1973) unearthed the ruins of an an-cient discotheque to find a dozen undead Egyptian mummies inexplicably throwing down what he dubbed, “Terrifying Funk From Beyond the Grave.” These mummies will amaze audiences with a funk concert unlike anything you have seen before.

An Evening with Bob Knight Bob Knight is one of the few coaches to have reached 900 wins. When he was 62-years old, Coach Knight became the youngest of the four coaches ever to reach the mile-stone of 800 victories. There are the wins, the conference titles, the national cham-pionships, and the exemplary graduation rate and player success after basketball. Most telling, there is the bond that exists between Coach Knight and those who have played for him.

Tickets for Children: Regardless of age, everyone in attendance must have a ticket, sit in a seat, and be able to sit quietly throughout the performance. Not all per-formances are appropriate for children. If you are unsure, ask a box office represen-tative prior to purchasing if the event is ap-propriate for your child. Out of respect to all patrons, we discourage bringing infants to any performance.

Refunds: Due to the nature of the per-forming arts, program dates, times, and prices are subject to change. Refunds are given only in the case of event cancellation or date change. Refunds are made to the original purchaser only. Handling fees are not refundable. If you find you are unable to attend an event consider the following options: (1) Share your tickets with a friend or co-worker, (2) Give your tickets to the Muncie Center for the Arts for distribution among those who are less fortunate and would otherwise be unable to attend. Send your tickets to, Muncie Center for the Arts, P.O. Box 64, Muncie, IN, 47308 or call 765.286.5347 for more information.

Lost Tickets: Emens box office can reprint lost tickets for the original ticket purchas-er. A $5 transaction fee will be assessed.
