2. Start Your Engines to Love Like Jesus Made to Play: An activity that encourages preschoolers to follow guidelines while having fun and learning new concepts

What You Need: “Good Friends Game Cards” Activity Page, , scissors, floor tape, dot stickers, heart stickers. What You Do: Before the Activity cut apart one set of Good Friends Game Cards. Tape a 12-foot line on the floor of your activity area. Along the line, place six dot stickers and four heart stickers. Mix them up so the heart stickers are spread out along the line. During the Activity: Have each child pretend to drive a car to move along the line. Line up the children at the beginning of the tape line. One at a time, allow each child to draw a game card from the pile. Read the card aloud and instruct the children to “drive” their car that number of spaces along the line. If they land on a heart, lead the children to repeat the key question and Bottom Line as written below. Play as long as time and interest allow. Make sure every child has a turn. What You Say: Before the Activity: “Friends, come line up here with me. We’re going to play a super-fun game to show us how to be a good friend. Everyone pretend to drive a car. (demonstrate to kids.) Great! We will take turns. When it’s your turn, draw a card from this pile, and I will help you read it. Do you see these dots and hearts on the line? Once I read the card, you drive along the line that number of spots. If you land on a heart, I will say, ‘Who can love like Jesus?’ And you will say, [Bottom Line] ‘I can love like Jesus!’ When your turn ends, you can head to the end of the line to let another friend have a turn.” During the Activity: “Let’s see, this card says . . . (read the card aloud). You can move your car [number on the card]. Great job! “You landed on a heart! Who can love like Jesus? (Pause.) [Bottom Line] I can love like Jesus!” After the Activity: “That was SO fun! There are lots of ways we can practice being a good friend! We’ll hear more about that in our story today. Let’s go!” Transition: Move to Worship and Story by continuing to “drive” like cars as they travel. Along the way, say, ‘RED LIGHT!’ Have the children stop and say, “Who can love like Jesus? [Bottom Line] I can love like Jesus.”

“Jesus washed His friends’ dirty feet to be a good friend and show them He loved them. Let’s make a list of things we can do for our friends to show them we want to be a good friend. When I say your name, tell me one way you can be a good friend and show your friends you love them, and I will write it in our prayer journal. Get ready and listen for your name! (Say each child’s name and write down what they say. Remember to print the names so the children can recognize their names and the letters.) “Wow! This is a great list! Let’s use it when we talk to God. Would anyone like to pray before I pray?” (Give each child who wants to pray the opportunity to do so.) Prayer SGL: “Dear God, we want to be a good friend and love others the way Jesus loves us. Will You help [child’s name and what they listed] and [next child’s name and what they listed] . . . (continue with the children’s list) . . . so we can be good friends and love others the way Jesus loves us? We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

ACTIVITY: Teacher What You Say: What a wonderful story. Jesus really loved His friends didn’t He? What did He do to show them He loved them? (Pause.) Yes, He washed their feet. That is awesome. Being a good friend means choosing to love people the way Jesus loves us. And Jesus loves us enough to get down and wash our dirty feet. That’s some BIG love! Jesus also loves us enough to help us love others the way He loves us. In fact, that is what our memory verse is about this month. Watch me say the verse and then you can say it with me. “‘Love each other (hug yourself) as I (point up) have loved you,’ (point thumbs to chest) John 15:12.” (Open hands like a book.) Now, let’s do it together! Are you ready? ‘Love each other (hug yourself) as I (point up) have loved you,’ (point thumbs to chest) John 15:12. (Open hands like a book.) Do verse together several times. “Our memory verse tells us that Jesus loves us and wants us to love others the same way that He loves us! Who can love like Jesus? [Bottom Line] I can love like Jesus!” Before we pray, I’m wanting to hear some ways you can love like Jesus. Can you raise your hand and tell me a way you can love somebody just like Jesus loves us? (have kids give ideas). You all had so many wonderful ideas! Can I give you a special challenge today? Can you try one of those ideas today to show love to someone in your house? I want you to practice loving like Jesus. PRAYER: Emcee What You Say: “It’s true friends, you can love like Jesus loves. Let’s pray, and then it’s time to say good-bye.” “Dear God, we want to be a good friend and love others the way Jesus loves us. Will You help us be good friends and love others the way Jesus loves us? We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.” CLOSE OUT Emcee What you Say: Friends, I’m so glad we got to spend time together today! I hope to see you next week. I can’t wait to hear how you showed love to someone. Remember, you can love like Jesus! Bye friends! End Call
