EMC Ireland hosts the Q4 Munster PMI Ireland
Event on September 21st, 2011
On Wednesday the 21st of September EMC hosted the Munster Branch of the Ireland Chapter of the
Project Management Institute. The purpose of the event was to share PMI Program Management
knowledge and techniques on how we manage projects and programs here in EMC. The event also
provided a useful networking opportunity to program managers from different organizations from the
Munster region on PM ideas and provided a forum for discussion in these challenging times that we find
ourselves in.
This event, which is one of four that is held in the Munster area each year for PMI members is
part of the PMI Ireland event calendar. Previous companies & institutions who have held these events
range from Apple, Bausch & Lomb and the University of Limerick, We had over 30 people attend this
event 25 were either from external companies or consultant Program Managers. Some of the companies
represented were Analog, HP, Eircom, Apple and GSK. The event was opened with introductions by
Barry O’Sullivan PMP and Colum Horgan PMP and with a stimulating welcome message by Michael
Buckley, Cork Project & Program Manager.
During the event two resident EMC PMP practitioners ( Mark Dullea PMP & Gary Gibbons
PMP) were able to showcase how they use the PMI methods and tools for managing new product
introductions and various projects here in the Cork COE. These tools ranged from the use of Work
Breakdown Structures, Product Dashboards and Milestone Charts. The techniques used in project
management cantered on topics such as Team selection, forecasting and reporting.
We also had a guest presenter from UCC, a Mr. James Fairhead, who is currently a lecturer in
Innovation Management at University College Cork, his presentation centred on ‘Our Attitude to Risk
and Uncertainty in Projects’, which we all agreed is an ingredient which is essential in managing any type
of project in any environment.
This event was organized, managed and delivered by EMC PMI PMP certified program managers from
the Project & Program management department and Distribution departments within EMC Cork COE.
with great help from the HR, Security, EMC TV & Manufacturing Admin groups and was a tremendous
success. Following on from this successful event we are planning on hosting a Project Management
interactive session sometime early in 2012.This event will be structured as a Project Management forum
discussion group with internal EMC COE PMs and also an invited selected group of external Project
Managers.
