Embedding Reflective Reading Groups into your organisation: Supporting staff CPD.

Background
Sat in my office at Berkshire NHS Trust in a reflective mood
• 2015 RCN signalled revalidation was coming in 2016
• Nurses panic
• Where was I?
As professionals, we all have a duty to keep our professional
knowledge and skills up to date through a continuous
process of learning and reflection.
NMC revalidation requires that each nurse/midwife must complete 35 hours of CPD in
the 3 years since last revalidating.
NMC Revalidation –
what do you need to do?
“Is the process of reflection when reading, assessing and potentially applying what you’ve read into clinical practice.”
(Collins and Brown, 2015)

The SRLA Reflective Tool
Promoting Reflective Reading
This is how the Reflective Reading Club works:
Individual Learning – 1.5hours CPD 1. You let us know you are interested. 2. We send you a short journal article and a small checklist of points to consider when reading it. Make notes as you read the paper in your own time and this earns you one and a half hours CPD time!
The Reflective Reading Club will look at: The right to be rude: managing conflict.
Participatory Learning – 1.5 hours CPD Our meetings takes just 1.5 hours
3. We meet for the club and discuss the article in a small
group, reflecting on points whilst working our way through
the checklist. Any notes that you make on the checklist can
be submitted into your portfolio as evidence of reflective
activities – this earns you another one and a half hours CPD
time!
4. YOU GET A CERTIFICATE of
participation and attendance!
The checklist will provide you with a framework to guide you through the process of reading, reflecting and putting into practice learning you have gained from a published article. It is based on the SRLA Tool (Searching, Reviewing, Linking & Action) designed by Collins & Brown (2015).
We would provide you with a short journal article, plus the checklist and ask that you read the paper at least once before the reflective reading club and that you make some initial notes using the checklist. It would also be useful to have a copy or online access to the NMC Code for Nurses and Midwives.

I am a midwife on central birth suite and I am interested in the reflective reading club. Is this something that is suitable for midwives?
• Library staff can either facilitate or run the sessions
• Reflective Reading Club virtually, twitter chat? Do you evidence your Twitter-based CPD? How can this be done?
Thank you and QA
