Built in the late 1800s, it’s believed that Embassy Works began its life as a laundry warehouse, servicing the upmarket hotels and households of Central London. Such is the quality of the materials used in its construction, the development boasts an array of delightful period features – including decorative archways and window detailings. All of which serve as a timely reminder of the attention-to-detail lavished on even industrial buildings built at this time. Vauxhall’s rise to become one of London’s most exciting districts is a real case of history repeating itself. From the mid 17th to mid 19th Centuries, Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens were one of London’s leading entertainment venues. The most famous singers and musicians of the day. Tightrope walkers. Balloon ascents. Firework displays. Its programme of events made it a veritable playground for Londoners and thousands flocked to visit. A rehearsal of Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks attracted an audience of 12,000 and in 1786, a fancy dress jubilee was host to some 61,000 enthusiastic partygoers. The Garden’s main walkways were lit by hundreds of lamps, leading visitors through an array of ruins, arches and statues to music rooms, a Rococo ‘Turkish tent’, a Gothic orchestra pit and even a Chinese pavilion. However, the unlit winding ‘dark walks’ were equally popular with amorous couples seeking some time away from the prying eyes of the gathered masses.

From Battersea Power Station and the US Embassy to the extension of the South Bank, the regeneration of Nine Elms is putting Vauxhall back on the map.
VAUXHALL IS BORN AGAIN
Battersea Power Station
With some 18,000 new homes, 25,000 new
jobs, new schools, parks, retail, markets and
cultural hubs in the pipeline, the £multi-billion
transformation of Nine Elms is the greatest
rebirth London has ever seen. Such is the
significance of the plans, both the American
and Swedish embassies are coming to Nine
Elms. A relocation of the Chinese embassy
is also mooted. However, it’s the plans to
make the area an extension of the acclaimed
South Bank that will ensure it becomes a true
international destination.
As the evolution takes place, the area will
morph into the bustling, riverside centre it
always had the potential to be – providing an
array of attractions to rival anything the rest
of the capital can offer. An icon of the London
skyline, Battersea Power Station’s retail,
cultural and commercial provision will play a
major role in this. As will New Covent Garden
Market, not to mention the array of riverside
bars and restaurants that are set to arrive.
In short, Nine Elms will become somewhere
Londoners and visitors alike love to be.

Even before the plans for Nine Elms were announced, Vauxhall had established itself as an exciting alternative to SOHO, earning itself the moniker ‘VOHO’ in the process. So while the regeneration plans will make the
area a truly world-class destination, Vauxhall is
already one of London’s most popular districts –
awash with a host of popular eateries, bars and
galleries. Not to mention celebrated attractions
such as The KIA Oval and IWM London.
The Tea House Theatre is just that; a cultural
hub that serves some of the best loose leaf tea
and homemade cakes in London. While The Ship
and The Black Dog are two great gastro-pubs,
with atmospheres to match their culinary talents.
Then there is The Brunswick House Café and
Lassco, which both share the same Georgian
building just off of Vauxhall Cross. Lassco is an
architectural salvage shop which has an eclectic
array of fascinating objects to make any home
that bit more homely. Secreted inside it and
surrounded by Lassco’s treasure trove of delights
is the Brunswick House Café, a mouth-wateringly
perfect dining experience in every sense.
Little Lisbon, London’s Portuguese heart,
occupies South Lambeth Road, with Casa
Madeira and Pico Bar spilling over into the
Vauxhall arches, where they reside alongside the
great Italian, Moratti. Vauxhall Street Food Market
is another treat – offering tastes from around the
world in a hidden courtyard. More gastranomic
delights are available at Italo delicatessen,
located on the picturesque Bonnington Square,
just behind Embassy Works – making it the
perfect brunch spot.

Vauxhall’s rebirth will put all you could ask for right on your doorstep, but with its prime location, should you wish to sample London’s other eclectic delights it couldn’t be easier. Just over Vauxhall Bridge is Pimlico, which puts
Pimlico Road’s stunning collection of antique shops
and galleries just moments away. Just slightly further
north are Sloane Square and Knightsbridge, and the
unrivalled retail experiences of Kings Road, Sloane
Avenue, Harrods and Harvey Nichols.
Follow the north side of the Thames towards
Westminster, and you’ll arrive at Tate Britain and then
the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. Westminster
itself is just seconds from Victoria, London’s other
major urban transformation project.
The South Bank, London’s world renowned
cultural heart is just four minutes away by train.
From the National Theatre and Royal Festival Hall
to the British Film Institute and Tate Modern, this

The fact that Pimlico and Battersea Power Station are both less than 10 minutes’ walk away and Westminster and the South Bank are just over 15 minutes’ walk, underlines the prime location that Vauxhall enjoys. For added convenience, particularly given the vagaries of the English weather, Vauxhall also enjoys superb transport links, with the overground, underground and bus stations just two minutes’ walk away. The overground service takes you to Waterloo in four minutes and then provides superb connections to The City and Canary Wharf. The underground station is served by the Victoria line, which offers quick access to Oxford Circus and King’s Cross St Pancras. The latter then connects you to an array of European cities via Eurostar. Gatwick and Heathrow airports are also both readily accessible.
