Thank you to Tom & Barb Bach
for sponsoring the February
Sunday worship bulletins.
Sisters and Brothers in Christ, God’s grace and peace be with
you always.
February is upon us so I thought it appropriate to share a few
fun facts. First there is 2/2 known in some circles as Groundhogs
Day. On this day woodchucks (groundhogs) will come out of
their winter dens, and looking about will determine by gauging
its’ shadow whether we will have six more weeks of winter or
that there is much more winter to come. Incidentally spring
arrives forty-six days after the second this year.
Fun fact two, and this one is new to me, on 2/2 the bears in
hibernation will roll over to sleep on their other side signifying
that winter is half over. I think I like this one in that it leaves
room for winter to last into May or June.
This third fact comes from an old English phrase, If Candlemas
be fair and bright, Come winter have another flight. If Candle-
mas brings clouds and rain, Go winter, and come not again. This
sounds like the place where we might have developed our
groundhog theory. But what, you might ask, is Candlemas?
Many modern churches on Feb 2 celebrate the presentation of
our Lord Sunday as we have. Some have the members of the
church bring their candles with them that they might have them
blessed and light them as a reminder that Jesus is the light of
the world. Historically this is a day of purification, renewal and
hope. It happens forty days after Christmas, the day Mary
presents herself in the temple for ritual cleansing according to
the law, to dedicate her firstborn child Jesus to the Lord, and as
a reminder that Jesus is the light to the gentiles who sit in
darkness.
Upcoming Events at Fortune Lake
Visit www.fortunelake.org for more details and to register! Jr. High & High School Youth Retreat ~February 7-8
Come to camp in the winter to reconnect with God, reunite with other camp-ers and former staff, and rejuvenate your faith. There will be camp-style wor-
ship, sauna, authentic conversation and (maybe?) sleep! Winter Wellness Retreat~ February 21-23
Spend a few days enjoying the outdoors, relaxing by the fire, learning, and recommitting to taking care of yourself. yoga and tai chi, interactive
workshops on heart health, food and wine pairings ,healthy recipe swap along with optional snowshoeing, belly dance, and saunas with
essential oils.
The season of epiphany, where the great light is revealed to us is
coming to an end. Soon the Advent-Christmas – Epiphany
seasons end and we enter into the Lent- Easter cycle. In the
coming weeks we will explore the sermon on the Mount. We are
reminded who is blessed in the reign of God, that we are to be
the salt of the earth and light in the darkness. We will be
challenged to go above and beyond what we perceive to show
goodness and mercy and once again have Christ Jesus revealed
to us as the beloved Son of God.
May your light shine so bright that others might see.
Peace,
Michael
A Senior Services Directory for Marquette County with resources
available for housing, transportation, health services, Veteran’s
services, senior centers, and more, is now available on the fellowship
hall bookshelf.
Our next Outreach Meeting is Thursday, February 20 at
10AM at Emanuel. All are invited to attend as we look
at upcoming events and our outreach ministry. We
are currently collecting clothing for the Sawyer
Elementary School’s Clothes Closet! When a child is at school
and needs a change of clothing, teachers use items from their
Clothes Closet! We are helping by collecting new socks, under-
wear and new or gently used t-shirts, sweatpants, and shirts for
them to use. A collection area is in the fellowship hall. In March,
our confirmation students and Michael will attend the MARKED
event at Messiah Lutheran Church in Marquette with many fun
activities including a service project; compiling baby care kits
for Lutheran World Relief. We can help by donating any of the
items listed on the following page. Collection will continue until
Sunday, March 22. We will have our Prayer Partner Exchange
Sunday, April 19. If you have any questions, thoughts or ideas
for outreach at Emanuel, please let us know.

The Souper Bowl of Caring began in 1990 with a simple prayer said by
Reverend Brad Smith at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church in
Columbia, South Carolina: “ Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl
football game, help us be mindful of those who are without a bowl of
soup to eat.” Each year Emanuel takes part in this annual fundraising
and food collection event. On
Sunday, February 2 please bring a
can soup that will go to a local food
pantry and $1 donation that will go
towards the Lutheran World Hunger
Relief effort. Thank you for helping
with this ministry.
This spring our confirmation students and Michael will attend
the Sunday, March 22 MARKED Event at Messiah Lutheran
Church in Marquette. Celebrating their identity as baptized
children of God, they will experience music, worship, learning,
food, fun and a service project! The service project is what we
all can help support by collecting any of the items for Lutheran
World Relief Baby Care Kits. Items needed for one kit include:
TWO lightweight cotton t-shirts (no Onesies ®)
TWO long- or short-sleeved gowns or sleepers (without feet)
TWO receiving blankets, medium-weight cotton or flannel, or
crocheted or knitted with lightweight yarn, between 36” and 52”
square
FOUR cloth diapers, flat fold preferred
ONE jacket, sweater or sweatshirt with a hood, or include a baby
cap
TWO pairs of socks
ONE hand towel, dark color recommended
TWO or three bath-size bars of gentle soap equaling 8 to 9 oz.,
any brand, in original wrapping; no mini or hotel size bars
TWO diaper pins or large safety pin
We have an area in the fellowship hall with the list of items
being collected.
Thank you for helping the Marked Events held in Marquette,
Newberry and Iron River complete their challenge of sending
500 Baby Care Kits to
Lutheran World Relief.
January Council Highlights
~Thank you to Jesse Kainulainen for his 3 years of service on the
council and Mary Lou Behrens for her 6 years of service on the
council.
~To save on paper and copying expenses, we will begin using the red
hymnal with a separate printed weekly cover, the Celebrate and an
outline of the worship service. This may begin after Lent.
~We continue to collect for Sawyer Elementary School’s Paw Packs
weekend food program and their Clothes Closet for children in need
of a change of clothing while in school. We also will collect items for
the March confirmation event MARKED; items for Baby Kit’s for
Lutheran World Relief.
~The February Local Benevolence designation is the Salvation Army.
~ The Financial Secretary report was reviewed and found in order.
~ The next council meeting is Sunday, February 16 at 1 p.m.
Both the January council meeting minutes and financial reports are
posted on the bulletin boards in the fellowship hall and the sanctuary
entrance.
Anniversary mementos are still available as
we continue to celebrate the 125th year of
Emanuel’s founding! They are available in
the office; mugs are $6 and several note-
cards depicting Emanuel through the years
and seasons are also available for $1 each.
If you would like to purchase any of these
great items, or have any questions, contact
the office by calling 942-7245 or email at
Upcoming Summer Event!
Every two years we hold a rummage sale at
Emanuel. This being an alternate year, we
are hosting “Plants, Pies & Summer Buys”
as a fundraiser for the new roof on the first
Saturday of June. We will have a sale of
perennial plants and flowers, vegetable and
herb seedlings, houseplants, pies and
homemade summer crafts: seasonally
decorated twig wreaths, bird feeders, both real and decorative
bird houses, stepping stones, wind chimes, flower pots, etc.
We will not be selling rummage items. Please be thinking
about any other items that may be appropriate for this event or
items you may have to donate or create! We will keep you
updated as this event gets closer. Please talk with Sherry
Robinson if you have any thoughts and creative
ideas to share. We are excited
and looking forward to making
this another successful, enjoyable
community event and fundraiser
for Emanuel’s roof.
Now that quilting for Lutheran World Relief
has begun, we are always in need of gently
used flat sheets for both the backs and
fronts of the quilts and thread for sewing
and tying. If you need a place to donate any
decorative pillows, we use the insides to
make new pillows our annual bazaar too.
Talk with Toni Peterson if you have any
questions and thank you for your
donations.
2020 Worship Times at Emanuel
Jan-Feb 9AM Mar-June 11AM July-Oct 9AM Nov-Dec 11AM
Ash Wednesday, February 26 Worship Service ~ 7 p.m.
On Ash Wednesday we begin our forty-day journey toward Easter
with a day of fasting and repentance. Marking our foreheads with
dust, we acknowledge that we die and return to the earth. At the
same time, the dust traces the life-giving cross indelibly marked on
our foreheads at baptism. While we journey through Lent to return
to God, we have already been reconciled to God through Christ. We
humbly pray for God to make our hearts clean while we rejoice that
“now is the day of salvation.” Returning to our baptismal call, we
more intentionally bear the fruits of mercy and justice in the world.
Please Be Aware!
With our winter season now here, if inclement weather
causes our Sunday Worship services to be cancelled
and since we can remotely change our outgoing phone
message, we will have a message reflecting the
cancellation at 942-7245. We will also post it on our Face Book page.
Please call first if the roads and conditions are questionable before
traveling. During the week, if the winter weather causes school
cancellations or delays, or if road conditions are questionable, the
church office may be closed until conditions improve, so please call the
office if you plan to visit. Thank you for your understanding.
