INSTALLATION OF CAST IRON COVERS & FRAMES
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
1) Correct installation of BCP Covers and Frames is essential for the installed cover to operate satisfactorily and give the long
service life that it has been designed for.
2) Failure to install correctly may result in movement or rock under load, excessive wear therefore reduced life, damage or failure
under load and poor sealing between cover and frame seatings.
3) All concrete infill covers and frames should be filled with structural grade concrete and allowed to cure with covers installed in
frames.
4) Generally, the side that has either two or four keyholes indicates the side that the cover should be removed from the frame.
5) An approved sealing compound is recommended for all cover and frame seatings.
CAST IRON INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
STEP 1 - FORM A REBATE IN THE PIT OPENING - Recommended rebate sizes are shown below STEP 2 - REMOVE THE COVER FROM THE FRAME - Mark or tag the frame end in which the cover lifting end seats. STEP 3 - LOCATE AND LEVEL THE FRAME IN THE REBATE - Ensure that the frame is correctly oriented for the required direction of cover removal. - Pack under each corner joint of the frame to raise and level the frame top with the rebate top. - Ensure that the packing and frame do not protrude into the pit opening. - Units with additional frame joints on undercut and drawcut seating ends: pack underneath and behind joints to prevent bowing
of frame. - Check for any rocking motion between diagonally opposite frame corners. Adjust packing to eliminate rocking of frame. STEP 4 - SET UP THE INTERNAL FORMWORK - Ensure that the formwork does not project above the horizontal seating surface of the frame (Otherwise the cover cannot be
seated prior to concrete infill). STEP 5 - CLEAN THE COVER AND FRAME SEATINGS - All cover and frame seating surfaces must be free of dirt or dust to ensure the correct seating of the cover in the frame. STEP 6 - PLACE THE COVER IN THE FRAME - Ensure that the cover is correctly oriented in the frame according to the mark or tag. - Ensure that the keyhole plugs are fitted. - Check for any diagonal rocking movement between the cover and the frame and adjust the frame packing, if necessary. - Run a finger along the top edges of the cover and the frame and check that the edges are level over the whole perimeter of the
unit (If not level, dirt may be present in the seating surfaces or the frame may be distorted due to rough handling). STEP 7 - POUR THE CEMENT INFILL (IF REQUIRED) - Pour the concrete and tap down to ensure all cavities in the rebate, the infill cover and frame cells (if required) are completely
filled. STEP 8 - SEAL THE UNIT FOR OPERATION - Remove the cover and internal formwork, Clean all cover and frame seating surfaces. - Apply sealing compound liberally to all vertical and horizontal seating surfaces of frame. - Install the cover in the frame and tamp down the cover at the keyholes until the top edge of the cover is level with the top edge
of the frame.

Specifications Enviro treatment systems are sized to match pipe size, treated flow and flow velocities. All Enviro models offer the same performance. This has been es-tablished by independent certified parties. The removal rates were exceeded in full scale controlled testing and/or were verified by university analysis. Installation instructions are included with each unit at the time of delivery. Site supervision is also available if required. Physical parameters: • Enviro’s models are designed so that the combined mass and
size allow units to be legally transported without special condi-tions.
• Cover slab removable for ease of installation. • Riser increments supplied to match invert and surface levels. • Covers available for B, D and G duty applications. • Locked down covers supplied. MASTIC JOINT SEALANT
PROCEDURE TO APPLY MASTIC JOINT SEALANT (refer to above diagram)
1. Brush sealing surfaces to remove foreign materials
2. Make sure sealing surface is dry.
3. Press the tip of the exposed sealant against bottom of jointing surface,
then un-roll the sealant around the joint and but the ends together.
4. Remove paper wrapper and couple the joint.
5. Wet or unusual conditions may require a primer.

How to apply the sealant to culvert joints
1. Do not remove the Black Vinyl backing as it protects the tape during the backfill process.
2. Brush down culvert joint surface to remove foreign material and ensure the surface is free of
moisture.
3. Brush or use a Paint Roller to apply the primer on a 100mm wide strip along the edge of each
culvert joint and allow to dry for 5 mins.
4. The primer spreading rate is approximately 1 Litre …..per 2 rolls of Culvert Sealant tape.
5. Peel off some of the Brown Paper film backing and press the butyl tape against the primed
surface,
6. One person can hold the roll and slowly un-wind the roll while a second person can gently pull
the brown paper backing off the roll and press the sealant tape against the primed concrete
surface.

PIT INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
RECOMMENDED CONCRETE PIT INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1) The pit shall be installed at the position and level shown on drainage plan or as directed.
2) The foundations should as far as possible be excavated to neat lines from the natural ground and formed to the required depth in accordance with the drawings. All soft, yielding and other unsuitable material should be removed and the bed should be thoroughly compacted and finished to a firm smooth surface of uniform bearing value. A nominal 50mm thick layer of sand should be spread evenly over the prepared surface.
3) Where the ground in which the pit is to be installed is known to contain aggressive ground water, additional protection to the unit may be required.
4) Pit riser joints shall be formed using the approved cement mortar. The internal surface shall be plas-tered smooth to make a strong and watertight joint.
5) Pits fitted with Swift Lift foot anchors shall be lifted with the appropriate universal lifting clutches.
6) All work around pipe connections should be sealed with cement mortar or in accordance with the drainage specification.
7) The excavation for pits is to be backfilled to ground level with excavation material in 200mm thick layers and compacted in accordance with the drainage specification.
8) All installations should be carried out in accordance with current WHS requirements.
RECOMMENDED GRC PIT INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1) During installation of GRC components, appropriate safety wear is recommended e.g. gloves, pro-tective glasses, etc.
2) Prior to installing the pit, determine and set-out the exact position of the inlet and outlet services on the external surface of the GRC pit walls. Take care to ensure the pit is installed in accordance with the design levels and details provided on the project drawings.
3) Mark the outline of the penetration on the outside of the wall of the GRC pit.
4) Penetrations can be formed by using a ball peen hammer. Using the ball peen end of the hammer, locate the centre of the penetration and start tapping until the material disintegrates and a small hole is made. Keep "tapping" around the hole until it opens up to match the outline of the penetration.
5) Neatly excavate the foundation material to suit the external dimensions of the GRC pit and risers ensure the excavation is slightly deeper to allow for a granular backfill zone plus a cement mortar bedding layer under the pit base. The depth of the granular backfill zone will depend on the quality of the foundation material. NOTE: It is essential that the base of the pit is founded on competent material with adequate bearing strength to prevent settlement or deflection of the pit during service.
6) Immediately after placing the granular backfill followed by the 50mm bedding layer comprising of a sand/cement mortar mix, lower the pit into position ensuring the correct alignment of the service pen-etrations.
7) Complete all service connections to the pit in accordance with the project design drawings. Ensure services are secured and the penetrations patched using an approved epoxy mortar to provide a wa-ter tight joint.
8) Backfill around all sides of the pit, using the sand/cement mortar mix, to a level of 200mm above the pit base.
9) Fit the extension risers and seal the riser joints using an approved epoxy mortar.
10) Backfill around all sides of the pit and risers up to ground level using compacted granular material. NOTE: ensure appropriate compaction equipment and effort is used to prevent damage to the GRC components.
11) Install the BCP grate or cover onto the completed pit installation.

SAFETY INFORMATION
BCP Precast is committed to the safe manufacture, distribution and installation of its prod-ucts and the goal of zero harm in the process. All stakeholders must follow safety proce-dures, requirements and regulations during the transportation, handling storage and installa-tion of the concrete products.
It is the responsibility of the driver of the vehicle to safely load and restrain the concrete products on their transport vehicle. BCP will load the transport vehicle with guidance from the driver while following safe work procedures.
During the unloading, movement on the site and installation of the concrete products, it is the responsibility of the main contractor or installation contractor to produce a Safe Work Method statement and comply with relevant codes of practice, standards, and safety regula-tions.
Concrete products require mechanical lifting by either a crane or forklift, when lifting con-crete products, workers must stand clear of the suspend load. Product weight information can either be found on the concrete product, invoice or delivery docket.
All concrete products have been designed to AS3600 and to be safely lifted and moved with lifting anchors or lifting devices. The concrete product must only be lifted using a certified lifting device from the designated lifting points on the concrete product. Concrete products either have “swift lift” foot anchors or lifting holes in concrete tanks.
All lifting and placement of concrete products must proceed with caution and strictly in ac-cordance with all relevant WHS standards.
