March’s Meeting Program The program for our March meeting is one you don’t want to miss. Sandy Leuth
of “Totes by Sandy” is our guest speaker for the evening of March 19th. Sandy’s
program is entitled “Mastering Purse Construction”. Sandy Lueth is from Windsor
and lives with her golden retriever, Daisy. Sandy started out teaching classes at
the Quilters Stash and helped make shop samples. When the shop owner asked
her to make a sample of a purse, she was hooked. After about 80 purses of that
many different patterns, Sandy developed one of her own, and then two and then
three, four, and five, and NOW LOOK HOW MANY!! Her purses were instantly a
big hit. They seemed to be just the right size, as well as efficient and comfortable
to carry. She had found her niche. Sandy’s purses have easy to follow patterns,
clear instruction’s, photos of each step of the way and even coffee breaks!! Sandy is also a certified Judy
Niemier instructor. Hopefully we will be able to have a workshop on Sandy’s purses later in the year.
Next month we will host Marci Baker’s presentation on “Paper Piecing, the Easy Way”. You don’t want to
miss her.

February Block of the Month
We definitely started this year off big! We got a
whopping 43 blocks donated at the meeting! Al-
so, Karen Kafka made the whole quilt and donat-
ed the top, backing and binding to Quilts of Valor.
Thanks to everyone that participated. We are
doing another donation to Quilts of Valor in Feb-
ruary and then the next two months we will be
doing blocks for Honor flight. Here are the in-
structions for February’s BOM.
February Block of the Month—for
Quilts of Valor.
The block is a string quilt block. Piece blocks on
a muslin foundation cut to approximately 13”
square. Gather your scraps and cut strings/strips
between 1” and 3 “. Strips can be wedge shaped
or with parallel edges and any color. Start with a
dark or bright blue 2 1/2” strip placed on founda-
tion diagonally, right side up. Add strips on either
side of the center strip by placing strips right
sides together, sewing 1/4” from edge and press
with each string that is added. Your strings
(strips) will extend beyond the foundation square,
but will be trimmed later. Cover the entire 13”
foundation. Align the diagonal line on your
square ruler with the center of the center string
and trim the block to 12 1/2” square. If you are
not sure about trimming your block, just bring it
untrimmed to March’s meeting.
If you need pictures with your instructions, go to
the website:

Remember to adjust block sizes if you’re look-
ing at the web site. Bring your finished
blocks to the meeting!

Sorry the picture quality—could not fix.
Honor Flight We're still needing several quilts for
the May 5-6 Honor Flight trip.
If anyone is interested, we'd love to
get them to the Veterans. Please do
not make smaller than 40" x 45" and
any color combo is great!
Thanks for your past support and I
hope we have more to pass along!

⇒ To restore old blocks/quilts, try the following recipe: 1 Gallon Water 1 Quart Buttermilk 1 Tablespoon Lemon Juice Soak quilt in mixture then wash in mild detergent. Your colors will return to their original brillance.
⇒ To remove pencil marks, according to the August issue of Lady's Circle Patchwork Quilts, "Quilt Patch Queries" by Sue Nickels and Pat Holly, suggests the following: "Make a solution that is one part water, three parts rubbing alcohol, and one or two drops of Palmolive or Joy dishwashing liquid. Do not use Dawn -- it may bleach out the fabric. Use a cotton swab to apply and gently scrub with a soft toothbrush. Wipe dry with a cloth. Again, test this before applying to your whole quilt . . . We hope this helps and remember to TEST, TEST, TEST! We also want to let you know that many a priceless, beloved antique quilt still has pencil marks on it."
⇒ Before washing your fabric, trim the corners off the selvage edges at a diagonal. This prevents the cut edge from ravelling in the wash, and is a great way to tell at a glance if you've prewashed that fabric!

Retreat News We still have space on our April 25-28 retreat and Cindy has a bonus for this retreat! She will be sharing her class free on stained glass for those who attend. The cost is $187.00 for 4 days three nights and it in-cludes room, meals, & our community sew-ing room. It will be held in Allen-spark just out-side of Estes Park in the beautiful Rocky Mountains. For those who have'nt been here your in for a true escape and fun time with a great group of sew-ing junkies. You can call me at 970-593-1042 or e-mail at mccormick_62175@ msn.com.
I have a New Grace A34 quilting frame that I would
like to give away. It's for hand quilting and it can be
set up for various size quilts (even a king size). I'm
pretty sure that I have all the parts and pieces. It's
just taking up space and I can't physically do it any-
more (arthritis acts up too much), nor do I have the
space. If you know of anybody that could use this,
please let me know.
Hate to give it away but there is reality....
Thanks
