CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE – GET ON TO IT !!!!

In Cairns there are several locations where members of the public can drop containers and receive ten cents per *eligible container. One location is North Queensland Recycling Agents (NQRA) in Newell Street, Bungalow and my grandchildren and I take our containers there. South Australia successfully introduced a container deposit scheme in 1977, but it took until 2018 before the Queensland Government could overcome the stone-walling by vested interests in Queensland and successfully introduce the “Containers for Change” scheme. The statistics are breath taking. Every year Queensland generates about 3 billion drink containers.

In the first year of operation (Nov 2018 - Oct 2019), NQRA received 17,954,585 items and paid out over $1.795 million. Numbers were expected to be well down during the pandemic in 2020; however, in the following 12 months (Nov 2019 – Oct 2020), NQRA received 18,256,511 items and paid out $1.825 million. A huge cash win for mums and dads and kids (and grandads), but more importantly a huge win for the environment as the number of containers dumped roadside has dropped significantly.

So get collecting and get down to Newell Street - or any one of the other collection points in Cairns.

*10c refunds are for eligible containers only. They must have the 10c refund notice on the container. A list of eligible/ineligible items can be found at https://www.containersforchange.com.au/qld/how-it-works

Deryck |Marshall Street Ed: I wonder if the increase in 2020 was due to a home consumption spike?!

THE LAST IN THE SERIES

Geodorum Densiflora

This ground orchid is easily recognised by its leaves which are well-represented in this

illustration. The Geodorum on Redden Island does have pink flowers but these die

quickly leaving green seed pods on a hooked flower spike, up to a metre tall. The keen-

eyed walker will easily spot these distinctive plants as they appear and disappear quickly

and are lush compared with the other plants on Redden Island.

This is the limit of my orchid knowledge at Machans with many thanks to Barb Collins

for her help and knowledge as well.

CRAWFORD’S CORNER Machans Beach residents, Thank you for your patience with the road works at the Caravonica Road intersection. Rest assured it is only a temporary measure while the new and improved intersection is underway (due May 2021). For now, please continue to drive carefully and hang in there! The COVID-19 Pfizer vaccination is here and has begun roll out in Cairns. Supply is limited across the world, so we must prioritise who receives the vaccination, and when. The first doses will be delivered to front-line workers, police officers and hotel quarantine workers. Residents and staff of aged care and disability care facilities will also be first to receive the vaccine through Federal government-identified providers. Good news for ANZAC day 2021 dawn services, marches and public commemorations – they will be going ahead as normal this year. Because we have worked together to keep safe, this year we can safely gather to mark the sacrifices of those who have served. My office has received correspondence in relation to dumping on State Land in Machans Beach for which I am meeting several members of the Barron River Catchment Management Association Inc early March on-site to ensure I am fully apprised of the issue and will share the outcome of this meeting. If I can be of assistance, please do not hesitate to contact my office. For regular updates, please follow my Facebook page craigcrawford4barronriver

COUNCILLOR RHONDA

March is here, autumn in the tropics is not like our southern states, just as beautiful (I think more so) but very different. Most would consider we have two seasons, wet and dry. Still very high rainfall, and yes, we do need to be aware of potential cyclones for the next couple of months. It’s important we realise that water is the lifeblood of everything we love and not just there for us to soak up.

March home owner tip- Don’t pay for water you don’t use!

As the property owner, you are responsible for the water and wastewater pipes on your property. In other words, everything your side of the water meter. This includes the cost of any repairs to, as well as damage caused by, the pipes on your property. To prevent a high water bill, check for leaks regularly. The property owner is responsible for the cost of finding and repairing the leak. A responsible tenant should also be alert to leaks where possible and report to the owner.

PS – SMITHFIELD LIBRARY - I will be available if you have any issues to discuss, or just a catch up, 10 am -12 pm on the first and third Thursday of each month at the library and beginning 4 and 18 March. As always stay safe, be kind to each other.
