TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - SEPTEMBER 27, 2015
Dear Sisters and Brothers,
There is a valley to the south of Jerusalem that is called “Gehenna”. It was once a place of pagan sacrifices where children were sacrificed to the pagan god Moloch. The Jewish people, therefore, regarded the place as cursed. It became a place to be avoided, and then a place for burn‐ing rubbish, a place of sulphur fires. Gehenna came to represent all that was evil and all that was lost, a place fit only for burning rubbish. It is easy to see how Gehenna came to be used as the name and the image for the oppo‐site of heaven. The place of the damned, of those who give themselves over to evil, is a place of fire and sulphur and burning.
It is from these images that people often get the impression that God is a cruel God, to send anyone into such a place of torture. In fact the images serve to impress upon us the devastation that is involved in losing contact with all that is good. What we call “hell” is indeed great suffering, and we speak of people “going through hell” in many ways during the course of life in this world. To suffer torment at the hands of evil people is truly a hell, and to become an evil person is very hell itself. When Jesus talks about evil in our world, he uses this word “Gehenna”. Evil must be cast out of life as we cast out our rubbish. It must be burnt like the burning that happens in Gehenna; there the sulphur flames never go out.
Jesus’ teaching in today’s Gospel Lesson tells us how serious a thing it is to offend against anyone in any way. Sin is always damaging, Jesus teaches us, and if we become lackadaisical about our wrongdoing, we are on a dangerous path. Wrongdoing is never all right. Not only do we offend against goodness when we do wrong, but we also give an example to others, especially to people who are young and vulnerable and easily influenced.
Jesus speaks about a threefold way of sinning, with hand and foot and eye. These parts of our body are so precious and so vital in everything we do. Yet the Lord says that it would be better to be without these precious limbs and eyes than to fall into the ways of sin. His language is deliberately extreme, not meant to be interpreted in a literal fashion, for he is making the point that there are no
half measures here. The great divide in life is right and wrong. All other divisions and differences are not problems.
So, for example, different religious groups, different nationalities, difference of gender, none of these things should be an issue for us in the way we behave and treat one another. We are all human beings. What divides us, what has always divided us and always will divide us, unless we change our ways, is our inclination to sin and wrongdo‐ing. It is then that we human beings create hell‐‐‐a place where we have separated ourselves from God.
There are many places in this world that are truly a living hell. Wherever war breaks out, there is hell. A place of killing, and a place where law and order have broken down, these are frightening places indeed. Wherever persons persecute other people and make life hell for them, full of fear and threats and anger, such a place is a living Gehenna. Many people live in these conditions every day.
In our understanding of the faith, it is important to see that God has nothing to do with sending people to hell. That is no part of Christian understanding. What we do understand is the ability of human beings to damn and to destroy; to destroy others and to damn themselves in the process. Jesus, in his own life, would be a victim of this hell‐ish behavior, when his opponents set out to destroy him. Jesus knew what his suffering would be. That is why he had such a vivid realisation of the seriousness of any kind of wrongdoing.
Let us then rejoice in all good people everywhere, of any religion and of none. Let us remember that we, who are blessed to have faith in Christ Jesus, are called to follow his great example, and so be light to the world.
In your charity, pray for the sick and the lonely ‐ visit them if you can. Please remember to pray for all who have wandered from the Faith and all who have died, especially, Marian Hardgrove and Fortunato Rocciolo. Also, pray for the souls of the faithful departed of our Parish Family.
May God always be pleased with us!
Monsignor Michael
OUR SCRIPTURE LESSONS REMIND US:
…that Gehenna, a valley outside Jerusalem, a place for burning rubbish, provides a good image of the destructiveness of evil and sin;
…that Hell is never God’s doing. It is the real possibility of our own capacity to choose wickedness;
…and that Jesus teaches us to have nothing to do with wrongdoing of any kind, but to bless the world with the power of good example.
May God always be pleased with us. Amen!

ST. ANN SCHOOL
Our children would like to thank the families that donated towards our Nursing Supplies to help their cuts and bruises. Your support is greatly appreciated!!
Dear Friends of St. Ann School,
I love repor ng to you the good news of our school.
Last year a survey was given to all parents. The results were tabulated and shared at our State of the School mee ng. We took the results very seriously and did what we could to maintain and to improve. The exci ng news is that our ac ons as a school have been not only successful but also no ced. We always try to respond to parent concerns and make improvements where and when we can.
Here is the survey result slide:
Recently, a parent commented, “I have to admit that I am impressed by how the school listened to its parents and QUICKLY responded to the feedback on opportunity areas. You and Msgr. have addressed technology, school lunches and (I believe) Spanish in some measure over the last 5 months.”
Below is a slide of the current situa on regarding parents last year’s least sa sfied areas.:
Thank you, dear parishioners for your con nued faith in us and for your support. Your dona ons and kindness to us are being put to use. God bless you,
