The other day I ran into an old friend who taught theatre in a small town While wewere talking she mentioned that I had one of her former students in a studentorganization I was president of during my undergraduate years She told mehe would often sit in her classroom at lunch because she was the only one whounderstood him It was his safe place His parents werenrsquot the most accepting and he

really didnrsquot have people around him he could talk to
He walked in his first pride parade with that student organization at last yearrsquos LittleRock Pride Fest I donrsquot think I ever saw him as comfortable as I did that day Hewas able to be himself and be surrounded by people who accepted him The nextweek he thanked me for allowing him to be a part of it all It reminded me why we dowhat we do
Stories like his are not uncommon There were several other students in thatorganization who faced very grim home lives There were students at high schoolsIrsquove spoken at that had their parents literally beat them with a bible Many of themhad to lie to their parents about where they were going because their parentswouldnrsquot allow them to be a part of ldquothe gay grouprdquo
For those students Pride is a symbol of hope hope that things will get better forthem We have a lot to celebrate this upcoming pride with the recent supreme courtannouncement and the marriages taking place across the state We must alsoremember that there are those who canrsquot celebrate for whatever reason and we haveto continue to be that symbol of hope Thatrsquos why we have pride to honor andrecognize our accomplishments and to provide hope to those who need to know itwill get better You can help in providing that hope You can volunteer at the2015 Little Rock Pride Fest or make a small $5 contribution Every little bithelps
