Choose Partners CarefullyThe partners in an import/export business are both the legal busi-ness owners and the virtual part-ners who handle many important transactions. Experience in trading
within your chosen product category, knowledge of the countries where your products are manufactured and connection with outlets where they are sold are the building blocks of your business foundation. It would be a good idea to have some commitments from wholesale or retail buyers before one completes a con-tract with a manufacturer or supplier.

Define the MarketMarket research is a critical foun-dation for any business plan , and import/export is not an exception. A marketing plan needs to be writ-ten which clearly defines the rea-
sons why these products are purchased, how they are manufactured and purchased, where they are purchased, precisely who distributes and buys the products and what the overall growth prospects are for the product category.
Identify the Sources Knowing most of the sources is
more important than just know-ing one convenient source. Even if the business owner is already familiar with a particular source it
is a good idea to have plans for alternative sources. If the venture is successful, the original vendor may begin raising prices and they may sell similar products to competitors. Alliances in the import/export field are more fluid than they are in local or regional sourc-ing. American presumptions of loyalty and fair play are often not understood and definitely should not be taken for granted.
Focus on Distinct Competence There are thousands of sources and
dozens of viable trade countries in the world. If the product is made in China it may also be made in India
or Africa or the Philippines in a few years. The import/import business owner’s own areas of education, expe-rience and talent are the only permanent assets that matter to this business. Most of the other assets can be bought and traded by thousands of other business managers.
Obtain the Best Available Information on Suppliers and Buyers
There are trade directories avail-able through the World Trade Organization. Always ask your pro-
spective sources for references. And, check the refer-ences. If you are starting a new business you probably have at least one source, but do not take this source for granted.

Our vision
To be the world’s greatest service company.
Everyone in Elsaef Group discovers a personal inter-pretation of “greatest” that supports what they do, every day. However it is not about revenues, profitabil-ity or growth. It is about being recognised as being the greatest in our field of service. It means being the best at what we do, and how we do it - bringing service to life. That recognition comes from those we deal with.
Our strategy
Our strategy for achieving this vision has four ele-ments:
Build a balanced portfolio. We aim to reduce risk and increase opportunity by building a balanced contract portfolio, spread across markets. This reduces our exposure to market fluctuations, enables us to select the best opportunities whichever market they are in, and allows us to transfer expertise from one market to another.
Maintain high rebid and new win rates. We maintain high win rates through building long-term customer relationships and by meeting - and often exceeding - customer expectations. This, along with our reputation with existing customers, helps us to expand the scope and scale of contracts during their life, retain contracts at rebid, and win new contracts.
Make strategic acquisitions. While we are primarily focused on organic growth, we make acquisitions to acquire new skills which will be important for future growth and to enter new markets where we see strong opportunities.
Develop new models. We respond to emerging oppor-tunities by finding new ways to deliver services. This may mean collaboration between our divisions, bring-ing together skills and experience which few other companies can replicate. Or it may mean partnering with our customer or the voluntary sector. Our ability to lead change keeps us at the forefront of our markets.
OURVISION AND STRATEGY
WE FOSTER AN ENTREPRENEURIAL CULTURE
WE ENABLE OUR PEOPLE TO EXCEL
