From the EditorWow - what a weekend! We hope you enjoyed yourselves?
The Media Team have had a busy weekend too, but we hope you like the results so far? There’s plenty more still to come.
In this issue, we’ve got a lot to cover including bringing you some of the best photographs from the County Rally and the all important news from throughout the County! There are more tons more photos available to view on our Facebook page at facebook.com/EastLancsScout
We have also released the deadlines for next year’s ELP submissions - so make sure they’re in your diary! We don’t want you to miss out!
Over the past few days we’ve seen comments that just prove how proud you all are of being a Scout - we love reading them! Scouting holds many more opportunities for everyone, it gets more exciting every day!

WELCOMEAs I write this we are all busy preparing for the busiest weekend at Bowley since our Centenary Camp six years ago. We are expecting in the region of 1600 visitors including Bear Grylls who is due in East Lancashire as part of his tour of the North West of England. I hope that by the time you read this you will be having a well-earned rest, celebrating a successful weekend of fun, challenge and adventure and looking forward to exploiting the new friendships forged. On your behalf, my grateful thanks goes out to all members of the County and District teams for making it happen.
Turning our thoughts further afield, the deadline has come and gone for leader applications to take charge of the East Lancashire unit which will go to the World Scout Jamboree in 2015. All the applicants will be interviewed in the near future and the leadership team will be announced by the end of the summer. If you haven’t already done so, please ensure all eligible young people have registered their interest for further information and have the dates of the information evening plus selection weekend in their diary. As always the World Scout Jamboree promises to be a life changing experience for those lucky enough to be selected.
In the last couple of weeks, the National statistics on membership numbers have been released, which generally show a 2% increase across the Country, this is reflected in the East Lancashire figures of 2.4%. This means that there are around 2,700 young people actively involved in Scouting in East Lancashire supported by nearly 700 adult volunteers.
There are many reasons for you to be proud of the part you play in support of Scouting in East Lancashire.

This weekend, Bear Grylls officially opened Bowley’s newest accommodation, the Running Bear Tipi Village. More information is available on page 6.

Adult volunteers are the heart of Scouting, and we hope that you get every bit as much out of it as you put in. Scouting is not only about young people, but also about the development of adults within the Movement.
To support adults in Scouting, East Lancs provides a comprehensive programme of training to build on existing skills and knowledge and develop new competencies.
Some elements of your adult training can count towards externally-recognised qualifications, and within the movement there are also awards to recognise dedication to training and outstanding service.

Some great news for Network so far! Our successful launch of the Rossendale Sub-Network Group is now in full swing, with a great programme and new members. We are now extending into Clitheroe with the new sub-group being set up by Bill Ruddock with the support of other Network members.
Our congratulations also goes to our Rossendale Network Leader, Michael for receiving his 5 years service badge. Now this may not sound much, but this award should have been awarded 25 years ago so it was quite a shock when I presented him with it at 38th Rossendale’s recent group bonfire.
We are coming up to a summer packed full of camps and two of the biggest camps are coming upon us so if you fancy seeing how Network really camp then you may want to read on!

Ever wanted to have a themed camp or offer something that little bit different? Well now you can and, you don’t have to go any further than Bowley!
Welcome to Bowley’s new accommodation - the Running Bear Tipi Village!
Bear Grylls opened the Running Bear Tipi Village on Saturday morning prior to appearing on stage at our County Rally. With one full sized tipi, complete with a central, inbuilt fire and electricity. The village has been funded from a surplus made from the County Cubs event last year and was supported by the sponsors, United Utilities and Lancashire County Council.
There are also four smaller tipis that will each sleep up to ten people!
A dedicated team of Explorers and Leaders from Darwen have spent months stripping the trees, which were kindly donated by United Utilities, and building the tepees.

As perfectly modeled by our County Team this weekend (they were under the coats, promise!), East Lancashire Scouts have launched their own range of “i.Scout in East Lancashire” clothing which are available at very competitive prices!
You can order from the ELS website at elscouts.org.uk/clothing and pay online. All the orders will be processed at the the end of each month and you’ll be able to collect your order from the County Office soon after that - but we’ll let you know when they’re available for collection.
We currently have micro fleeces, hoodies and polo shirts avail-able in a wide range of colours, but there are plans to extend our range soon!

Red Nose Day seems like an age away now but 26 Scouts from St Matthew with Holy Trinity Scout Group in Burnley managed to raise an amazing £70 from the sale of red noses, monster cupcakes and the Scouts’ entries into the madness!

BEAVERS CELEBRATE 1ST BIRTHDAY!The Grey Colony Beavers at 38th Rossendale Scout Group recently celebrated their first birthday! You might remember us announcing the formation of a second Beaver Colony at the 38th Rossendale in an issue last year - well, they lasted a year and they’re still going strong!
The Beavers celebrated by holding a party at their meeting night. The Beavers (and leaders!) played a number of party games including musical chairs, pass the parcel and dunking apples before getting a piece of the specially prepared birthday cake!
This is the first of two new additions to the 38th as the Rossendale Sub-Network also open with the 38th Rossendale as their base. The Sub-Network group formed when 18-25 year olds within the District found it hard to commute to Bowley twice a month, which is where the County’s main Network meetings are currently held.
Next year will see the 38th Rossendale celebrate 30-years of Beaver Scouts and a big party is planned! The 38th were part of a Scout Association experiement with Beavers and opened their first Beaver Scout Colony in May 1984 taking in boys aged 6-8. Beavers became an official section of The Scout Association in 1986.

COUNTY RALLY

Want to have the chance of going on a trip of a life-time? East Lancashire has spaces available for the 23rd World Scout Jamboree 2015, in Japan.
The Jamboree is open to anyone who was born between 28th July 1997 and 27th July 2001. If you are younger than this, don’t worry - you’ll have an opportunity to attend the 24th WSJ in North America.

JAPAN 2015
East Lancashire Scouts have become a group member of LSSA (Lancashire Schools Sailing Association).
Sailing
This means that a Scout (with adult supervision) can turn up at the wednesday night sailing session (£5 per session) to learn to sail with LSSA.
Scout Groups can book 6 places for their group through the LSSA website. There will be an opportunity for leaders to gain qualifications in the coming year.
The West Lancashire Scouts Sailing Team have also offered a couple of sessions to groups to help out. For more info on this, contact Ray Worthington via the West Lancs Scouts website.
Kayaking
There are also Kayak introductory lessons available on wednesday evenings for group bookings with a maximum on 8 people. For more info about this, contact Paul Wicks ([email protected])
