•Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain signed the agreement to pay and set the terms of Columbus's voyage to the Indies. The agreement said that Columbus would become the governor of all founded land.

The Spanish Crown gave permission to Spaniards to marry the Taíno Indians. Some people of Arab descent went along too. Columbus wasn’t going to complain because back then land meant power.

This is the route Columbus took on his second voyage.

Tainos Raid

• The tainos were enslaved by the Spaniards, but a great taino leader took charge and led raids against the isolated Spanish settlements. They weren’t successful.

• On 1863, the rebellion calles “El grito de Lares” of The Cry of Lares was fought because the Spanish Government was being injust. The revolutionaries weren’t that successful in this either. Some were imprisoned or, even worse, slain.

Everything Works Out in the End

• In 1898, During the Spanish-American War, Puerto rico became a colony to the U.S. Gradually, over time, P.R has gotten recognition from the U.S. Government.

• In the end nothing was really damaged-in the sense of economy, politics, or any thing else in the government.

Puerto Rico Today

• Today Puerto Rico is an independent country, but, under U.S rule.

• Though it isn’t a state in the United States, it is still a commonwealth

• Being part of a commonwealth means that they are treated like a state but with less rights than the states of the U.S.

The Governtment• Puerto Rico’s government is the same

as the United States government.• Puerto Rico does have its local

government but it still has to follow some of the rules of the U.S.

• Puerto Rico’s government follows the idea of separation of powers stated in the Constitution of the United States.

The Executive Branch

• There is not a president in Puerto Rico as the chief executive. Instead there is a governor.

The Legislative Branch

• The Legislative branch, because Puerto Rico is under U.S. rule, is a bicameral legislature. This means that there is a House of Represtentatives and a Senate.

The Judicial Branch

• Laws are based on the laws of the Spanish and Americans.

• There is a supreme court and smaller district courts

• The judicial system is basically managed as the American judicial branch is.

ARROZ JUNTORice and Beans casserole. In a caldero cook ½ pound of bacon until crispy.

Remove the cooked bacon and chop into small pieces. In the bacon fat stir-fry ½ cup of sofrito for a couple of minutes or so. Add the cooked bacon. Add 1 can tomato sauce, 1can pinto beans, 1 can measure of raw rice, and 1 can beef or chicken broth. Stir well. Add enough water to cover rice 1½ inches

above rice line. Let it boil on high until water evaporates. Cover and cook over low heat for about 35 minutes.

For the mass of empanadillas: •An olive oil glass •A glass of white wine •Flour (the one that it admits) •Salt

For the filling: •1 chicken (approx of 1,2 kg.) •500 g. of perforated meat (thin or calf) •6 onions •1 cube of vegetable broth •500 potato g. •150 sugar g. •200 g. of mantequilla •4 eggs •Cominos •Saffron •Oregano, salt and pepper to the pleasure
