American Society of Transplantation1120 Route 73, Suite 200Mount Laurel, NJ 08054

Dear AST Board of Directors:

It is with great enthusiasm that I nominate David S. Goldberg, M.D., M.S.C.E., on behalf of the Liver Intestine Community of Practice (LICOP), for the 2015 AST Clinical Science Career Development Award.  Dr. Goldberg is a rising star in the arena of liver transplantation and hepatology. At this early stage in his career, Dr. Goldberg already has a broad spectrum of areas of investigation and associated grant award and publication success. Most recently, he has developed strategies aimed at reorganizing and improving liver allocation and associated policy development.  He has been instrumental in illuminating to UNOS and the liver transplant arena atlarge the significant disparities in access to care and liver transplant wait listing variability that translates into MELD score differences across the UNOS regions. I cannot emphasize enough, the importance of his novel and very thoughtful work in changing the face of liver transplantation based on his initiatives. He is a highly motivated, astute, and innovative investigator, and will prove to be a ‘game changer’ in the field of liver transplantation.   Accordingly, Dr. Goldberg has been awarded a NIH K08 grant looking at organ allocation on a broader scale and I am confident that his work stemming from this award will have a major impact on issues of disparities in liver transplantation.  He has great promise to become a national and international leader in liver disease and transplantation, and the AST Clinical Science Career Development Award will help to realize and to recognize his potential.

By way of introduction, Dr. Goldberg received a BA in Judaic Studies from Brown University, Providence, RI in 2001, and his medical degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, NY in 2005.  He then completed his internship and residency training in Internal Medicine at the New York Presbyterian HospitalColumbia University Medical Center in 2008. Successive fellowships in Gastroenterology (20082011) and Transplant Hepatology (20122013) followed thereafter at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.  Additionally, Dr. Goldberg received his Masters of Science in Clinical Epidemiology from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA in 2011.

Dr. Goldberg is currently an Instructor in Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, and is on the springboard for promotion to Assistant Professor this year.  He was recently appointed Medical Director for Living Donor Liver Transplantation at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 2013.  Dr. Goldberg’s combined academic gifts and zeal for continually broadening and sharing his knowledge base are clearly in evidence with the following appointments at the University of

Pennsylvania:  Faculty Fellow, Clinical Center for Epidemiology and Biostatistics (2011present); InvestigatorinTraining, Center for Pharmacoepidemiology Research and Training (2012present); and LDI Fellow, Leonard Davis Institute (2013present).

As so outlined on his CV, it is worth noting that during the ten year period spanning the years 20032013, Dr. Goldberg received some 16 honors and awards for outstanding service and/or achievement in areas as diverse as investigative research, health evaluative research, academic achievement, teaching, excellence in clinical medicine, and outstanding service to the First Year Class at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.  As with his broad training and experience thus far, such diverse recognition is, I believe, a testament to Dr. Goldberg’s comprehensive and compassionate approach to the field of medicine.

Even at this early stage in his medical career, Dr. Goldberg has made formidable contributions to researchscience with 21 peerreviewed articles published in respected scientific journals within his field, 14 of which he has served as the senior author.  An additional four peerreviewed articles are currently in press, three of which he has served as the senior author.  In the last three years, Dr. Goldberg has presented 14 abstracts of his research at esteemed scientific meetings within his field.  Dr. Goldberg has served as the senior author for an additional five of six book chapters, editorials or reviews, the final two of which are currently in press.  Finally, as documented on his CV, Dr. Goldberg’s research has reached a much broader audience in recent months through alternative media sources such as talk radio and the popular press.

Dr. Goldberg is currently an ad hoc Journal Reviewer for such esteemed publications as the American Journal of Gastroenterology, the American Journal of Transplantation, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, Annals of Internal Medicine, Hepatology, Liver Transplantation, and the American Journal of Medicine.  He currently holds active membership in the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, the American Gastroenterological Association and, of course, the American Society of Transplantation. Dr. Goldberg has been very active in the AST and has served on the AST Trainee and Young Faculty COP Committee (20112013) and the Liver and Intestinal Community of Practice (LICOP) Executive Committee (20112013).  At the institutional level, Dr. Goldberg has been an active member of the Ethics Committee at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania since 2009.

In summary, the AST career development award would be well deserved by Dr Goldberg and would facilitate recognition of his outstanding research and contributions to the field of liver transplantation.  This award will also help to develop future policies and strategies aimed at improving disparities in access to care and in wait listing transplant candidates. Dr Goldberg had been a true asset to the AST and I am confident that he will continue to make major contributions to the society and to our field.   If I can be of any further assistance in the support of Dr. Goldberg’s candidacy for the AST Clinical Science Career Development Award, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely yours,

Susan L. Orloff, M.D., F.A.C.S.
