CONGRATULATIONS ACCELERATE COLLEGE GRADUATES!

We’re proud to celebrate our spring 2020 Accelerate College graduates. These 28 future stars from Community Unit School District 300, St. Charles Community Unit School District 303, and Cambridge Lakes Charter School were enrolled full-time at Elgin Community College while also enrolled in high school. In addition to earning their high school diplomas, these students will earn an Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degree.

Accelerate College is a dual-credit program whereby high school-age students enroll full-time at Elgin Community College and complete college courses. Students fulfill requirements for a high school diploma as well as an associate transfer degree simultaneously. The program is unique in several ways:

• Accelerate College is one of just a few dual-credit partnerships in Illinois where high school students earn an associate degree upon graduation.

• Student support services are specifically designed to help high school students transition to college.

• High school districts cover tuition providing significant savings for participating students and their families.

Elgin Community College is a Leader College.

SHARED VALUES

Excellence Our programs and services strive for the highest level of excellence to successfully achieve our vision. We use research-based methods to strengthen curriculum and

deliver high-quality learning-centered instruction and services.

Freedom of Inquiry We believe learning is most engaging and viable when a spirit of free inquiry

exists, allowing everyone the freedom to explore new and diverse ideas and to express their interests and attitudes. We strive to create environments where

inquiry flourishes and guides innovation.

Equity We are an inclusive community that provides students, employees, and community members with full access to all resources needed to achieve their individual goals.

We commit to creating an environment that is equitable and inclusive to all.

Diversity We value and honor diversity in all forms and perspectives. To successfully achieve our vision, we provide a safe and inclusive community that promotes and affirms

individual growth, social responsibility, and self-worth for success in a global world.

and actions are guided by our vision and not by personal interests, and they will be enacted with a sense of service to students and community members.

Accountability As a public institution we commit to make the best use of resources. We strive

to be transparent in reporting our decisions and actions and seek feedback from others as we continuously improve our practices.

HONORS DISTINCTIONS

Honors and High Honors Graduates who achieve a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 to 4.0 for a degree or certificate receive their diplomas with high honors, while those achieving a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 to 3.49 receive their diplomas with honors.

Phi Theta Kappa Phi Theta Kappa international honor society recognizes and encourages the academic achievement of two-year college students and provides opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, leadership, service, and fellowship programming.

Mu Alpha Theta Mu Alpha Theta is the national two-year college mathematics honor society dedicated to inspiring keen interest in mathematics, developing strong scholarship in the subject, and promoting the enjoyment of mathematics in two-year college students.

Alpha Beta Gamma Alpha Beta Gamma is an international business honor society established by business professors in 1970 to recognize and encourage scholarship among two-year business and professional college students.

Honors Program Graduate Students receive the Honors Program Graduate designation after they have earned a minimum of 15 hours of honors course credit and have maintained a minimum 3.5 GPA. Additionally, they have engaged in leadership roles and service on campus through Phi Theta Kappa and other student organizations as well as in the community.

Integrated Career and Academic Preparation System (ICAPS) Students participate in an integrated career and academic cohort. They are able to graduate in two semesters or less with certificates in their career areas.

Service, Academics, Leadership, Unity, Tribute, and Excellence (SALUTE) Veterans National Honor Society

SALUTE is the first national honor society established for student veterans and active duty military in two-year and four-year institutions of higher education. Students who are inducted into SALUTE have shown courage, strength, leadership, excellence, and perseverance in their military endeavors and now are showing that same commitment to their academic careers.

Student Life Leadership Exploration and Discovery (LEAD) Program

The purpose of the Student Life LEAD Program is to foster a foundation of holistic development through educational, cultural, and leadership programs.

Students are encouraged to “LEAD to the next level” with active learning on campus and in the community. Certificate tracks embed curricular and co-curricular learning experiences into three leadership certificate options: Clubs and Organizations, Cultural Awareness, and Service Learning.

ACADEMIC MACE An academic mace is traditionally carried in procession and mounted on stage whenever degrees are granted or when the faculty is assembled in formal academic dress. Elgin Community College’s mace is made of locally grown black walnut, copper, and glass and incorporates ECC’s logo and shared values. The mace was designed and crafted by Joel Peck, professor of art history; David Reich, professor of welding; and Howard Russo, professor emeritus. It was funded by the Elgin Community College Faculty Association as a gift to ECC President David Sam in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the college in May 2010.

LAMP OF KNOWLEDGE The “lamp of knowledge” featured on the college’s official seal and shown on stage during commencement symbolizes the illumination of the mind through scholarly pursuits. The lamp, as an indicator of intellectual and spiritual insight, has ancient origins reflected in numerous cultures and religions throughout the world. As a symbol for higher education, the lamp is connected to Greek philosopher Diogenes (c. 400-323 BCE), who is reputed to have carried a lantern at noon in search of an “honest man,” in which the man may have represented truth and knowledge.

The lamp featured on the ECC stage today was made by Howard Russo, professor emeritus. Former Dean David Broad and Professor Emeritus E. Max von Isser were instrumental in establishing the lamp of knowledge in the college’s seal and heraldry.

ACADEMIC DRESS Academic costumes derive from two garments, a type of robe and a head covering worn in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Since the clergy composed the majority of the educated class, academic dress is an adaptation of the cope, or mantle, which was worn for warmth in unheated buildings and in religious processions. Through the years, great diversity in color and style of cap, gown, and hood developed until 1895, when an intercollegiate code was adopted in the United States to encourage standard designs and usage.

An academic costume consists of three items: the gown, the hood, and the Oxford cap or mortarboard. Gowns are easily distinguished by their sleeves. Basic gowns have full sleeves. Bachelor’s gowns have long pointed sleeves. The sleeves of a master’s gown are oblong panels reaching nearly to the hem of the gown. Each sleeve has a small arc cut out near the bottom and a slit at the elbow through which the wearer extends his arm. A doctor’s gown has full and bell-shaped sleeves which carry three horizontal bars; it also has a velvet panel extending around the neck and down the front of the hem. The velvet trim is usually black, but may be the color associated with the degree.

Hoods are similar. An associate’s hood has a colored lining but no trim. A bachelor’s hood is the same length but is trimmed with a narrow velvet band. A master’s hood is longer and trimmed. A doctor’s hood is four feet long, has a broad rounded base, and is trimmed with a five-inch velvet border. The color of trim on a hood identifies the wearer’s degree; that of the lining, the institution that conferred the degree.

The Oxford cap, usually referred to as a mortarboard, is black and has a long tassel which is fastened by a button on the top. Doctors wear a gold tassel. The tassel is usually worn dangling over the left front of the cap. During conferring of degrees, the graduates turn their tassels from right to left symbolizing the completion of their degrees or certificates.

Colors that appear on the trim of the hoods and indicating the field of study include:
