Please join us at the Ascension Parish Library in Gonzales on Thursday, July 18th, at 6 PM, for a presentation by Louisiana State Trooper Jared Sandifer on Women's Safety. Trooper Sandifer will be sharing tips on personal safety for women as well as personal defense in unexpected situations.
Call the library at 647-3955 to register.
Y ou can never get a cup of tea big enough or a book long enough to suit me."
- C. S. Lewis
Elevenses …. What a lovely way to spend a Saturday morning at the library, especially if you’re feeling a bit peckish. We invite you to pop in for tea and a chat with Charlotte Guedry and Czarina Walker as we mingle with friends and neighbors, enjoy a cuppa, and learn all about the finer points of taking tea.
Drinking tea is an everyday occurrence in many cultures and the morning break for tea has long been an integral part of the working day. Charlotte and Czarina share their family customs and traditions with us all as we enjoy a soothing cup of tea and a delightful repast.
The place to be for a nice spot of tea is the Dutchtown location of your Ascension Parish Library. Mark your calendars … Saturday, July 27th at 11 AM, of course!
Whether it’s a cup of tea, a cuppa, or a spot of tea, we’ll have the kettle on.
Please call the library at 673-8699 to reserve your seat.
Our speakers …
Charlotte Guedry is Editor-in-Chief of The Creole-Ascension Parish Online Newspaper. Charlotte is from England, and tea has been a staple in her life since her early years. Family memories will forever be associated with tea somewhere in the picture. From an early age, she knew how to make the “proper cuppa!” She serves it at home and firmly believes that the tradition of tea, from the steeping to the serving, is a part of who she is. It’s about more than the drink to her, it’s about time spent with loved ones and the merriment of conversation.
Czarina Walker is CEO of InfinEDGE Software. Another tea enthusiast, Czarina has grown up with the drink via influence from the Pakistani side of her family. With children of her own now, she has turned the tradition of tea into something to share with her children. To Czarina, the traditions she is creating are also all about family. Sharing the drink is a time spent together and the memories of sharing the drink with her family when she was a child are cherished ones now being shared into the next generation.
Elevenses … a midmorning break for refreshments taken between breakfast and lunch, usually around 11a.m. The ritual of elevenses makes us stop and pace ourselves, providing an opportunity to rest a little and reflect, or just to catch up with ourselves or our friends.
Attendance at library programs and events constitutes consent to be photographed for
Ascension Parish Library publicity purposes.

APL Gonzales, June 4, 2013 …
In Celebration of National Garden Club Week , members
of the Gonzales Garden Club visited the library in
Gonzales with flowers and a book donation. GGC
President Priscilla Monson presented a copy of Secrets to
Great Soil to John Stelly, APL Assistant Director. In the
background is a beautiful arrangement of daisies, yellow
roses, and lemon slices fashioned by GGC member Joan
Riley for the occasion. Along with the floral display,
packets of wildflower seed were available for patrons to
bring home. Thanks to the Gonzales Garden Club for
brightening up our day with these lovely surprises.

and telling everyone about YOUR library.
about how tornadoes maintain their
intensities and what causes them to fizzle out,
Karstens said.
Tornado Forecasting
At the moment, tornadoes are much more
difficult to forecast than hurricanes. For
example, the National Hurricane Center was
able to predict the path of last year's
Hurricane Sandy with startling accuracy a
full five days before it made landfall. In
contrast, even though residents of Moore had
advanced warning that a potentially
dangerous storm was moving in, they had
only 16 minutes after the first warning on
May 20 before the tornado touched down.
Part of the difficulty, Karstens said, is that
tornadoes are much smaller than hurricanes.
"It's really a matter of scale," he explained.
"With the hurricane being so large, we're able
to populate our models with lots of points to
resolve it and we can come up with much
more accurate multiday forecasts." Secondly,
while current computer models can predict
when a supercell storm is likely to form, not
all supercell storms give rise to tornadoes.
"That's one of the questions we're
struggling with as scientists: which storms
will be the ones to go on producing tornadoes
and which ones won't?" Karstens said.
Karstens is involved in an NSSL project
that aims to predict a tornado's path shortly
after it forms, called Warn-on-Forecast. He's
optimistic that tornado forecasting will
improve as computers and tornado modeling
software become more powerful, and as more
environmental data such as temperature and
dew point measurements are gathered close
to tornado-spawning storms by instruments
and tornado researchers.
"We've got a long way to go," he said,
"but I think we're making steady progress."

Edited from Discovery News and National Geographic News
The tornado that struck near the Oklahoma
City suburb of El Reno May 31 was
upgraded to an EF5 strength (winds greater
than 200 mph) — the strongest rating on the
Enhanced Fujita scale, which is used to
measure the strength of tornado winds based
on the damage caused. National Weather
Service (NWS) storm surveyors also put the
tornado's path at a whopping
2.6 miles (4 kilometers) across
at its widest point, making it the
widest tornado on record.
The tornado was part of an
outbreak that hit the area
around the Friday rush hour and
endangered thousands of people
on local highways. Three storm
chasers were killed in the
outbreak after a tornado picked up and
destroyed their vehicle — an event that has
caused some soul-searching in the chaser
community.
The May 31 outbreak came a little more
than a week after another EF5 tornado
decimated the city of Moore, Okla., killing
24 people. Both tornado outbreaks were
made possible by optimal tornado conditions.
"By pure chance, we had two separate
weather systems, both in very close locations
and that ended up looking quite similar," said
Christopher Karstens, a research scientist
with National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration's (NOAA) National Severe
Storms Laboratory (NSSL) in Norman,
Oklahoma.
Tornado Alley
What makes Oklahoma so tornado-prone?
The state lies within an area of the Great
Plains known as Tornado Alley, a region that
stretches from South Dakota to central Texas.
Tornado Alley occupies a unique geographic
position where warm humid air from the Gulf
of Mexico, hot dry air from Arizona and New
Mexico, and cool dry air from Canada meet,
explained NSSL's Karstens.
"In the springtime, those air masses tend to
work together to create environments that we
saw [on May 20 and May 31]," he added.
"Sometimes they collide in Oklahoma,
sometimes in Texas, and sometimes in
Kansas."
While the United States has perhaps the
best historical records for tornadoes, twisters
also occur elsewhere, including Italy, India,
and South America. Another area with
similar conditions to Tornado Alley is
Bangladesh, said Chris Weiss, an
atmospheric scientist at Texas Tech
University. "They have a lot of violent
tornadoes - some would argue even stronger
[storms] and tornadoes - over there," Weiss
said. "But a lot go unreported because they
don't have nearly the observation network
over there that we have over here."
What Tornadoes Have in Common
While tornadoes can differ in their size,
strength, and location, they all share certain
characteristics. They are spawned from a
type of rotating storm called a supercell
thunderstorm. And they are all driven by
atmospheric instability and by a phenomenon
known as wind shear. This happens when
"wind near the ground blows in one
direction, but aloft it blows in another
direction. This creates shear in
the airflow," Karstens explained.
"If you produce an updraft
within that flow, the updraft will
acquire the properties of the air,
and the atmosphere begins to
spin and rotate."While scientists
understand some of the basic
setup conditions necessary for
tornado formation, there are still
many fundamental questions about tornadoes
that remain unanswered.
Tim Samaras, one of the tornado chasers
killed by the El Reno tornado, was known for
getting instruments inside tornadoes to
measure pressure and wind speeds. A month
before his death, Samaras said in an
interview, "We still don't know why some
thunderstorms create tornadoes while others
don't. We're trying to collect as many
observations as possible, both from outside
and from the inside [of tornadoes]."
Scientists also have a limited understanding

Whitey Bulger : America's Most Wanted
Gangster and the Manhunt that Brought
Him to Justice
364.1092 CUL Kevin Cullen
Raised in a South Boston housing project,
James "Whitey" Bulger became the most
wanted fugitive of his generation. In this
riveting story, rich with family ties and
intrigue, award-winning Boston
Globe reporters Kevin Cullen and Shelley
Murphy follow Whitey's extraordinary
criminal career-from teenage thievery to
bank robberies to the building of his
underworld empire and a string of brutal
murders.
Based on exclusive access and previously
undisclosed documents, Cullen and
Murphy explore the truth of the Whitey
Bulger story. They reveal for the first time
the extent of his two parallel family lives
with different women, as well as his
lifelong paranoia stemming in part from
his experience in the CIA's MKULTRA
program. They describe his support of the
IRA and his hitherto-
unknown role in the
Boston busing crisis,
and they show a keen
understanding of his
mindset while on the
lam and behind bars.
The result is the first
full portrait of this
legendary criminal
figure-a gripping
story of wiseguys and cops, horrendous
government malfeasance, and a sixteen-
year manhunt that climaxed in Whitey's
dramatic capture in Santa Monica in June
2011.
