tradition or winter

celebration and for

each,they find

different meanings.

I think that we all

enjoy them in the

same “language” !

In Romania ,there are, many traditions in the winter time,that have been preserved from old times.

Both ,Christmas and Epiphany, are intersected in the middle of the night of New Year.

Main winter holiday cycle - Christmas, New Year, Epiphany - worked over time as

independent moments of renewal and starting time of year.

The Christmas tree

The Christmas tree is a decorated tree, the God worshiped substitute who dies and is reborn at the end of the year.

Decorating the tree and waiting for the children to "Santa" called, in south-eastern Europe, Christmas, comes with many gifts, is a habit that has pervaded western from city to village, from the second half of the nineteenth century in Romania.

Ignatius is a solar deity who took the name and date of celebration of St. Ignatius Theophany (December 20) in the Orthodox calendar, synonymous with the Pigs Ignatius –in the dawn of the Ignatius day,the Christmas pork is cut and eaten.

Carols is a ceremonial

scenario texts,magic

formulas, dances,

gestures, performed at

home or in the streets by a

sacred band.This

phenomenon appears

under different

names,depending on the

zonal winter solstice

periods: ("Star",

"Plugusorul",

"Sorcova“etc.)

Carols send wishes for

health, fruity rich anf

fulfilling wishes in the new

year and it is the most

common tradition of

romanian people.

Starting with Ignatius and ending with Christmas,this celebrations is accustomed on St. Basil, boys walk with popular clothes and go with “Goat”, ”Brezaia” or “Turca”.

It made it’s place beside traditional masks (goat shepherd, gypsy, butucarul)or masks of devils and which by cries, shouts or funny movements, increase the note of humor and fun but in the same time to get the devil away !

New Year is the time at which a new calendar year begins and the calendar's year count is incremented !

Plugusorul and the Sorcova(bouquet used for New Year’s wishes) are some New Year's traditions in Romania.

At the turn of the year, lovers are kissing under the mistletoe to not partake of arguments. New Year is greeted with much noise and fireworks for the evil spirits to be removed .

->Christmas dinner is the traditional main meal on Christmas Eve .

->Dinner traditions on Christmas vary from country to country across the globe, reflecting the culture of the country . In romania it is celebrated with pork preparations.In Romania preparations begin the day by Ignat when people cut pigs and children go to carol(after other celebration,Bolindeţi) and get bagels, apples, nuts and oranges.

->Christmas Day is served with sausages, cabbage, liver sausage, jelly, pudding,boeuf salad and, of course, wine ,next to the Christmas Tree.
