VT-JAS , Line no- 2963, Aircraft Serial no.-29033, VAR No. PW422.
Due to lightening strike ,we are replacing RH. elevator tab [ part no.
65C26384-28A ].
As per the maintenance manual we have to add balance weight Part no.
69-53223-2 ,IPC ref. 27-21-11-02 item no. 419 , which is nil in our
stock. .
We have balance weight part no. 69-53223-1 available in stores.
Please confirm whether we can install balance weight part no. 69-53223-1
in place of balance weight part no. 69-53223-2.

DESCRIPTION:
The following message sent to Sue Fullington.
Jet Airways (JPL) datum airplane is AOG in Mumbai due to lightening strike.
JPL wants to carry out RH Elevator tab balance check. JPL has ref /A/ balance weight installed on the
airplane. However they have ref /B/ balance weight in stock.
Per Spares Engineering and Provisioning on myboeingfleet.com, ref /B/ balance weight is not interchangeable
with ref /A/ balance weight.
JPL is unable to procure ref /A/ balance weight and wants to know if they can fabricate or modify ref /B/
balance weight and install on the airplane.
Desired Action:
1) Please advise JPL if they can install ref /B/ balance weight on the datum airplane with any modification.
JPL would highly appreciate a response within the next 2 hours.

The tab which has now been installed in the airplane weighs 5.40 lbs. thus
requiring Qty 02 balance adjust weights (P/N 69-53223-2) to be installed
(REF: AMM 27-31-31 & SRM 51-60-06).
JPL has in stock, balance adjust weights P/N 69-53223-1 which is not
defined in the IPC and not interchangeable with P/N 69- 53223-2 The SRM
Ref. 51-60-06 allows fabrication of the balance adjust weights as per the
dimensions and material specified therein.
Detailed study of the drawing shows that the difference between both the
part numbers is the provision of a fourth hole in P/N 69-53223-2 in

comparison with P/N 69-53223-1.
JPL would like to use the balance adjust weight P/N 69 - 53223-1 after
modification of the same by drilling the fourth hole as per the dimensions
from SRM 51-60-06 / Fig. 1 / Page 2.

JPL would like Boeing to review the interchangeability between 69-53223-1 and 69-53223-2
RESPONSE:
Boeing Engineering has reviewed JPL reference /A/ request and provides the following:
Boeing Engineering has No Technical Objection (NTO) to JPL modifying 69-53223-1 into 69-53223-2 by
adding (1) additional 0.218 - 0.229 diameter hole per Boeing Engineering Drawing with special attention to the
location tolerance called-out on the Boeing Engineering drawing. Additionally JPL must re-identify the 69-
53223-1 as 69-53223-2 when the additional hole is installed.
