Elevation & ClimateElevation - the height of a region above sea level.

Analyze Figure 4.19 on page 71.What affect does elevation have on temperature?

An increase in elevation means a decrease in temperature.

La Paz & Rio de Janeiro have similar dist. from ocean & similar latitude. La Paz is much colder because of higher elevation .

•La Paz, Bolivia•Elevation = 3600m•Coldest month = 9oC

•Rio de Janeiro, Brazil•Elevation = 61m•Coldest month= 25oC

Elevation & Precipitation

Windward - side of a mountain the wind blows toward.

Leeward - side of mountain opposite from windward.

Rain shadow - region on leeward side of mountain that receives little precipitation because most rain has fallen on the windward side.

Places on windward side = more rain.

Analyze Figure4.20 on page 72.

Places on leeward side = less rain.

Page 3: Elevation & Climate

Blue = Windward

Brown = Leeward

What is the wettest location? What is the driest location?What is the coldest location? What is the warmest location?Where is the rainshadow?Where is the leeward side?
