ELEMENTS OF FICTION

The narrator tells the story about other people and uses the pronouns “they” “I” “her” etc.

The narrative perspective of a story is known as “point-of-view”

There are 3 narrative perspectives used by authors:

POINT OF VIEWTHIRD PERSON – OMNISCIENT

THIRD PERSON – LIMITED

FIRST PERSON

ELEMENTS OF FICTION

The narrator knows everything about all the characters and the events, and can shift from character to character.

Insight is given about how characters feel and what they think.

Details are relayed through a “god-like” perspective – all knowing and all seeing.

Using this perspective, the narrator is often a participant in the story, a bystander or observer.

Not all the details are revealed because the narrator does not have insight to all events, nor the feelings and thoughts or beliefs of the characters.

This is the emotional colouring created in the story by the author’s selection of details, description, use of imagery, etc.

It is the feeling the reader gets from his/her experience with the story.

Theme is the story’s message, unifying or central idea.

Theme is the author’s commentary on an aspect of human nature or life in general.

It is not the topic.

It is the message that the author is sharing about the topic or issue.

Ie. A story might be about war – this is the topic

The theme might be that war destroys all innocence and life.

Do not convey theme in terms of cliché.

Ie. Do not judge a book by its cover. XXXXXX

The setting is where (place) and when (time) the story occurs.

Authors give clues about the time era of a story

- speech, methods of transportation, the cost of items, etc.

Stories set also have a universal setting – be relevant anytime and anywhere
