What do gold, copper, and aluminum all
have in common?

Matter is
Anything that has MASS and
takes up SPACE (VOLUME)
Atoms are the smallest particle of
matter.
So how do we get all the
different types of matter that
we see around us?
Atoms group together to make up
everything around us.
They are like bricks in a building.

There are only 118 Different types of
atoms. They are called Elements.
All matter is separated into 2 types:
Matter
Pure Substances
Elements Compounds
Mixtures

Pure Substances sample of matter that has definite
chemical and physical properties.
1. Elements sample of matter that is made up of only the
SAME type of atoms
A pure substance that cannot be separated
into simpler substance by physical or
chemical means
found on the
periodic table
(a list of every known
atom)

2. Compounds
Compounds = pure substances
made up of 2 or more elements
that are chemically combined.
Made of elements in a specific
ratio that is always the same
Has a chemical formula
Can only be separated by
chemical means, not physically
- Elements combine by chemical reactions or
chemical changes

Molecule
- Molecule = a particle of a compound
oEx. A molecule of water = H2O = 2 Hydrogen
atoms and 1 Oxygen atom
oA lot of H2O molecules = water
Properties of Compounds
o Just like elements, each compound has unique physical
and chemical properties
o Physical properties to identify compounds = melting
point, density, and color
o Properties of a compound can be different than the
properties of individual elements that make it up

Example: Table Salt
NaCl = Sodium (Na) reacts violently with
water, chlorine (Cl) is a poisonous gas, but
together they are a harmless every day
substance you can eat; also dissolves in
water (without exploding)
Breaking Down Compounds
oCompounds can be broken down into
elements or simpler compounds
oCan only happen by chemical changes like
adding heat or electric current

Mixtures A combination of two or more pure substances that
are not chemically combined (no bonding).
Substances held together by physical forces, not
chemical (mechanically put together)
No chemical change takes place (NO bonding)
Each item retains its properties while in the
mixture.
They can be physically separated

Work Session: Element, Compound, or
Mixture?
For each item, decide if it is an element,
compound, or mixture and hold up the
number of fingers as follows:
Element = 1
Compound = 2
Mixture = 3
