The new Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010 requires a new menu pattern to be incorporated
the first day of school 2012. The main change is during lunch the child must take one ½ cup serving of a fruit or vegetable in order for the meal to become reimbursable. All children will be offered 1 cup of vegetables and 1 cup of fruit. There will be weekly requirements to serve dark green vegetables (broccoli), red/orange vegetables (carrots), beans and peas, and starchy vegetables (corn). Also, there are changes in the bread grain components; ½ of all grain breads served must be whole grain rich. There will be stricter requirements for both minimum and maximum calories per meal. The minimum and maximum for elementary school (Pre K – 5) lunch is 550-650 calories, grades 6-8 (600 – 700 calories), and grades 9-12 (750-850) calories. We purchased colorful signage for each serving line within the elementary and middle schools to assist students in selecting a reimbursable meal. Students will be offered at least 5 food components and must choose at least three to be a reimbursable meal.
This school year, 2013-2014, there will be new changes to the breakfast meal pattern. There will be stricter requirements for both minimum and maximum calories served at breakfast. The minimum and maximum for elementary school (PreK-5) is 350-550 calories, middle school (grades 6-8) 400-500 calories, and high school (grades 9-12) 450-600 calories. Another change in breakfast this year is that ½ of all the grain breads offered must be whole grain. Students will be offered at least 4 food items at breakfast and must choose 3 items to be a reimbursable meal.
