An element is a substance that is made from one kind of atom only. It cannot be broken down into

simpler substances.

Element SymbolsElements are PURE SUBSANCES made of only one type of atom.

So chemists do not have to write out the whole name of an element, they are represented by symbols of one or two letters.

*An element symbol only contains one capital letter but may also have a lower case letter.!
