ELECTRONIC HEALTH
RECORDS
OBJECTIVESAt the end of this presentation one should:
1. Understand what is Electronic Health Records(EHR)
2. Identify Benefits of using EHR
3. Identify barriers with the use of EHR
4. List points for success implementation
What is Electronic Health Record?(EHR)
Electronic Health Record is a longitudinal electronic record of patients health information generated by one or more encounters in any care delivery setting (HIMSS 2007)
Factors for Successful implementation of EHR
1. Strong leadership
2. Full involvement of clinical staff I design and implementation
3. Mandatory staff training
4. Strict adherence to timeline and budget
Benifits for staff using EHR
Less time spent “chasing charts” Reduced paper work Less time deciphering handwriting Enhanced information sharing Better availability of information
Benefits of EHR for staff
Less time “chasing files”: staff would have quick easy access to patients records, time would be saved that would have otherwise been spent locating paper charts .
Reduced paper work: Administrative task such as filing out forms require staff time this process would be streamlined by EHR system
Benefits of EHR for staff
Less time deciphering handwriting: with EHR information would be legible ,will spent less time interpreting handwritten notes
Enhanced information sharing: EHR can be programmed for easy and even automatic delivery from laboratories and other health care providers, saving staff time that would have been spent manually entering information
Benefits for clients with the use of EHR
Improved quality and convenience of care: EHR provides full
and accurate patients information.
Increased patient participation: EHR provides an avenue for
patients to collaborate with health care providers to make
decision about care.
Quick access to records: records can be retrieved with the click
of a button
Enhanced privacy and security of Patients data: strict security
measures ensuring that only those directly involved in patient
care can access it.
Barriers / Drawbacks with EHR implemtation
Capital to Purchase: to change the entire system is an expensive process and to get financial approval will take some time.
Resistance of Staff : Staff may not be willing to adjust to change .
Shortage of staff : staff will be away from work for training period
CONCLUSION
In conclusion studies have shown that EHR generate
positive returns on investments and improved
organizational efficiency.
EHR can transform the way care is delivered. Once
patients experience the benefits of this technology
they will demand nothing less from their health care
providers.
