Slogan: my magazine has aslogan that is keep the flowthis is relating to the title of the

magazine and also wouldappeal to the audience as theywould think about being cooland how when buying andreading the magazine it is stillcool and what they wouldaspire to be. The Vibemagazine does not have aslogan, this may be because it istargeting the older audience so

does not need to use thingssuch as slogans to attract them.Compared to the vibemagazine which is from thesame genre, my magazinewould be breaking theconvention of not having aslogan, but when comparing itto the wider genres it isdeveloping it.

Masthead: I have used theconvention of having the largemasthead at the top of the magazine, for my masthead I included a banner,I did this because it was clear to me

not many magazines had this and so Iwanted my to be different. Also I haveadded an effect on the word FLOWand a star. I have added the starbecause even though my magazinewould be distributed in the UK, the USAhave played a big part in the makingof R&B and if there were other issuesthey would include pictures ofAmerican artists, therefore I wanted tonot only represent the history of R&Bbut also include different people

which would appeal to the audience.I have also made the picture slightlyoverlap the banner of which themasthead is in, I have done this onlyslightly because I did not want to takeany attention away from themasthead as it would be the mainrecognition point about the magazineto the audience as the image wouldchange with every issue. The usage ofthe large masthead is very common

and is a convention of musicmagazine, however many musicmagazine of the R&B genre have theimage of the person overlap veryclearly and sometimes even makeletters unclear to the audience. This isalso well done as the audience wouldbe so familiar to the magazine thatthey would not need to see the wholeword to recognise it.

Main Image: The main image inmy magazine is a MS (Mid-Shot), I haveused this shot to show as much as I couldshow of the person on the front coverwithout breaking common convention. With this shot, you can see her bodylanguage, who she is and also what sheis wearing which I think would beimportant to the audience I amtargeting. On the VIBE magazine, the

image is a close shot, this is morecommon when the person on the frontpage is a well know person.

Direct mode ofaddress: The girl in mymagazine is giving the audiencedirect mode of address, by lookingstraight at the audience it makes itpersonal for the reader. Also youcan tell that she is confident andwants to make it personal for the

readers. The VIBE magazine also hasan image that has direct mode ofaddress. So I have developed onthat convention.

Colour scheme: mycolour scheme is red whiteand black. I have usedthese colours becausethey represent the genreof which the music

    magazine is.These coloursshow boldness, strength

and attitude, it is seen alot in things related to R&B.

Bar Code: I have placed the bar code at the bottom ofthe page. I have placed the price of the magazine at the topof the page, this is because I think it will be better if the readersknow straight away how much it is and would appreciate thatit is in a visible place. This is a challenge of conventions

because usually it is at the bottom as we can see from the VIBEmagazine.

Title: The title for mycontents page wasinspired by the title of the

VIBE contents pagehowever mine isdifferent. The layout ofthe word contentschallenges conventionsas it is not often see inother magazines. Thiswould appeal to mytarget audience as theywould see it as a

representation ofthemselves; notfollowing the crowd. Ihave kept the banner forthe contents page as Iwanted the magazine asa whole to havecontinuity and aspectsthat are seen on all ofthe page. This is the

same reasons why I keptthe colour scheme red, black and white. I left thebackground whitebecause of the layoutand the colours, if I had ita different colour itwould take the attention

    away from the sell lines.

Images: the largest image I have on my contents page is not linked to the main story on the front page,in this way I think that it challenges conventions. I have decided not to have an image that linked because Ithink that the reader would want a number of stories that they can read rather than one that is constantlybeing promoted. I have not used the large picture in the way that the VIBE magazine and other R&Bmagazines usually use them, I have cut of the large magazine half way through the page. I have also notwritten a sell line or quote about the person that the image is of, I did this because the readers would beinterested and curious to see what the story about the musician/singer is. I have used the background inboth the two smaller images. I did this because it is a nice change to the white background.

I used to conventions of having thepage numbers next to the features, regulars and pictures, this is to keepit convenient for the readers.

I have also used theconvention of havingthe date next to thecontents page. I haveseen this done on VIBEand many othermagazines.

Images: I have used a convention andplaced the images on the left half of thepage, whereas in the other magazine theimages are placed along the spread of thedouble page. I have done this so that theaudience can see the images and read thetext in a clear way without being distracting.

    My double page spread

    Professional double page spread

In my magazine and the other magazine thereare introductions at the beginning of the article. There are also quotes from the artists on bothmagazine. This is a convention. I have used thisbecause I think that it would be in theaudiences best interest to have an entertainingarticle that gives them lots of informationbecause it is what they paid for.

In the professional magazine there is no large title at thetop of the page and the artist is introducedat thebeginning of the article. However I do have a large title

that emphasises on what the artist is all about so that thereader will be entertained by it and wil l want to read the

    article.

My magazine represents a particular social group in many ways. The images I have chosenare images that represent them and images that they can relate to, an example of this isthe clothes that the people in the images are wearing, from beanie hats, to colourfulhoodie, jeans and trainers, these are all clothes which I would expect the target audienceto wear. Not only the way the images are presented in the clothing but also the pose andthe facial expressions, some are mellow some have attitude and others are happy. All of

these aspects that represents the particular social group and also something that thosepeople can relate to which is what would be important for the readers. These may bestereotypes but it is what I found in my research.

Another way that my media product represents a particular social group is the price. Mymagazine is 2.50 which the social group I am targeting to would not see as very much. After taking into consideration other traits of the social groups I am targeting I do not thinkthat is not seen as too much as they would be trendy people who would be passionate

about the music or an artist enough to spend that much. Even though their income wouldnot be very high they may have allowances.

I have included images of people from both genders. I have done this because if therewere prominently pictures of females, I do not think the male audience would want topurchase the magazine as it would be classified as a girls magazine so by having picturesof both genders I have given everyone something to relate to and not put the magazine ina gender category.

Media institutions that would distribute a magazine of mygenre are IPC media and Bauer

Bauer media publish a wide rangeof magazines. Examples of music

magazine that they publish anddistribute are Q and Mojo. Mymusic magazine would fit well intothe types of magazines they arepublishing and distributing as it isfor both genders, it has a wideage group gap, this however thismight be a problem as there will

be competition with othermagazines. For these reasons Ithink that my magazine would notonly benefit from being distributedby them but they too wouldbenefit because they would get alarge audience that may not be

as diverse as they have now.

IPC media is a big publishing house

that has a very impressive portfolio.

They cater to a large audience

    which would benefit my magazine

as there would be loyal buyers who

would want to buy the magazine.

IPC do not cater for many musicmagazines, therefore by

    distributing my magazine, they will

get more revenue as they would

have entered a new market also

    there would be no competition

with my magazine because there is

no other magazine to compete forbuyers with.

AgeThe ages of my target audience would be from 15-23, because there are a

variety of things which would appeal to people of between those ages. The younger

audience of around 15 would be appealed by the artists that are on the magazine, the images and the new gossip they could get from it. The older aged category

would be for young adults who are in university or have started their professions, they

would be appealed by the language used in the magazine and also the information

they would like to find out such as where gigs are for their free time.

Gendermy magazine would be aimed at both genders. This would be represented

in my magazine as it would contain contents which would appeal to both males and

females . Also the colour scheme of my magazine does not bias one gender over theother.

Dress Sensemy target audience would dress in clothes that were comfortable but

also which looked good. They wouldnt have a very high income so they wouldprobably save up for what they want or ask their parents for the money. They would

make sure that their outfits were representative of their personality so would either be

very colourful and eye catching or would be dim but coordinated.

Hobbies & Interestmy target audience would be in school or have recently left. This

means that they would enjoy relaxing, going to shows in their free time. Also they

would like to be with their friends and enjoy being on social networking sites such as

    Facebook and Twitter.

Artiststhe artists that my target audience would enjoy listening to would be people

such as Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Kanye West etc.

Fonts and colour scheme:I have used brightcolours and colours that go together well to attract

my audience as it is not only the colours thatrepresent the genre of music but also if it was on ashelf with other magazines it would be quite brightand eye catching.

Images: I have used imageswhich my target audience wouldenjoy viewing. Also In the majority

of the images there is direct modeof address, this would make it morepersonal for the reader andaudience and would make themfeel more connected to themagazine.

Layout:I have used a conventional music magazine layout. I havedone this because it is the most effective way of making sure that theaudience can see all of the information that they need and that would

make them choose to buy the magazine.

I handed out a questionnaire for my research task and I did not want to just

do that again, therefore I asked people to go on my blog and give me

feedback on what they think worked well on the magazine and what would

    need improving:

Xafsa: I think that the colours are the strength for this magazine, they blend and workreally well together and are very bright so you can spot them easily. What I think needimproving is the contents page, it is a bit plain compared to the other two pages.

Nowshad: I really like the images you have used, I think because of the hoodies andbecause of the way they are standing and stuff, it really works well with the genre ofmusic. I think the double page spread needs to be representing the male audience alsoand I dont think it does that like the front cover and the contents page does.

Eileen: I think you have used the right colours to represent the genre of music you havechosen. I think by having fewer pictures on the contents page, it would look better.

Before constructing this product I did not knowhow to use many of the technologies andsoftware that I have learnt to use. An example ofthis is using Photoshop. I did not know how to usePhotoshop before and had a lot of difficulties

during the process however by the end of it I amable to use many of the tools available such as thebackground erasers and rubbers or the buckettoo, to do what I need to do. I have also learnthow to use drop box, I had previously signed upfor drop box however did not know how to use it

but after a few lessons I had got the hang of it andI am able to use it now and the same with Scribd.Blogger is the most important thing I have learnt touse, because it was what I needed to constantlyuse to keep on track and make sure that I haduploaded everything for the examiner.

I have learnt alot in the progression from the preliminary task to the full product. Onething I had learnt was how to use Photoshop in more effective ways so that I would notwaste much time. In my preliminary task I spent a lot of time on adjusting things andrubbed out the background with a rubber as the other tools did not work, for the fullproduct I learnt how to make the background eraser work etc. I could work better andfaster because I had more skills and knew what to use and when.

I have learnt how to manage my time. In the preliminary task, because it was a schoolmagazine I could take all of the pictures inside the school which was not timeconsuming and so I could spend more time editing them. However in the pictures for thefull product, I had to take the pictures outside of school and had to decide where Iwould take them which took more time and so I had to manage my time so that I hadtime to edit them also.

I think that I created a much better product in the end than I did for the preliminary task, the full product seemed much more professional. This is down to the new skills I learnt, the way I managed my time and also the other magazines that were available to giveme inspiration. I learnt that I could look at other magazines and tell which aspects wouldwork well on my magazine and how to make the unique, or how to use conventions tomake my magazines look professional and what the target audience would and would

    not want on the magazine.
