Let’s Make Deferred Action a Sacrifice to Bear Witness to Real Change

Cesar JuarezSPECIAL TO

EL OBSERVADOR

The day laborer marching down Alum Rock towards San Jose City Hall yelled out to the multitude, “What do we want?” Screaming back with all their might, protes-tors answered, “Immigra-tion reform!”

A young undocumented woman marches with her father because the broken immigration system affects not only university students like herself and her younger undocumented sister, as well as her undocumented parents, but also her two U.S. born elementary-age, and a university freshman, brothers.

Both are marching to voice the need for an im-migration reform that hon-ors family unity. She knows that she needs to participate in the change she wants to win.

In the streets, never once, have I heard my community answer the above question with, “A work permit!”

I am what the media and other sources have labeled a DREAMer. I was brought to the United States at the age of seven. I completed second to twelfth grade in public schools, attended Evergreen Valley College, and transferred to San Jose State University where I re-ceived a B.A. in Social Sci-ence, Single-Subject Prep.

In two weeks I finished putting together my De-ferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) packet. Through the process my heavy heart felt contradic-tory emotions: feelings of joy, accomplishment, ex-citement, and freedom, alternated with vulnerable feelings of being a sell-out, failing, and accepting to be dehumanized. My mind exploded with memories of

my involvement with great fighters in the struggle that made DACA a reality.

For over seven years I have been an organizer of a great majority of the im-migration reform actions in San Jose, in different capacities: as a member of a student organization at San Jose State University that advocates for undocu-mented students, a member of the May 1st Coalition, a community organizer and organizing director of a lo-cal non-profit that empow-ers immigrants, and a labor union organizer. To para-phrase Martin Luther King Jr., as an organizer my duty was to fight for justice be-cause that is what love looks like in public.

Starting on August 15, undocumented community members throughout the nation between the ages of 15 and 30, that meet certain requirements, have been coming out of the shadows and filing their DACA and employment authoriza-tion applications. About 300,000 individuals have applied for this benefit.

With full honesty, this process has been very diffi-cult. On the level of political empowerment, this is not what I fought for. On a per-sonal level, I could not allow myself to apply before help-ing others (one of the orga-nizer syndromes). The val-ues that I learned from my mother, the Catholic faith I grew up with, and reading

about great leaders and so-cial justice movements are strong.

The values of justice, love, sacrifice, and serving the people--so that we are treated with dignity and equality--did not allow me to apply for Deferred Action for over three months. This “benefit” confers the “right” to be treated as second-class, to forego other basic human rights such as fam-ily unity, voting, access to a safety net, and the freedom to travel. Never once was I in the streets with the peo-ple demanding only a work-permit.

At an early age I un-derstood that sacrifice is needed to bear witness to change. From being open in public about my undocu-mented status and partici-pating in a hunger strike, to frequently protesting outside ICE offices and now applying to Deferred Ac-tion, sacrifice brings with it new life.

I apply for DACA feeling reenergized to be part of a historic and heroic struggle to win immigration reform. The necessity to organize has become more urgent. While I have felt this ur-gency for close to ten years, moments like this of great sacrifice bring a renewed sense of hope. With the hope that millions of people have inside comes the duty to organize. ¡Let’s continue organizing!

My mother, Guadalupe Dorado de Morales, was a very devout religious person who, without fail, prayed to ‘Our Lady of Guadalupe’ as her patron saint. During a journey to Mexico, accompanied by my mother, sister Socorro, our children Linda, Antonio, and Maria and wife, Betty, we went to visit the basilica which is today called ‘Our Lady of Guadalupe’. This basilica is impressive though built simply of red bricks. Many devout indigenous people were present during our visit. Their devotion and faith were evident.

During our visit, we toured the ruins of Teoticu-ahan. The ruins to be seen, even today, are the prod-uct of a civilized order and economy. We climbed the Pyramid of the Sun, where at the top, my children, each at different times, re-ported that they felt that they belonged there. They had experienced some sort of paranormal cosmic khar-ma.

Know, that today, we are still people of great devotion and faith, and we are all taught to use human logic, to follow the rule of law and order, which we perceive to be inequitably available to us. Regardless, many of us are the descendants of families whose genetic his-tory goes back to primor-dial times somewhere here in America.

Today, many of us are saddened. We are disdained by elected members of U.S. Congress, who consider Mexicans to be foreigners

who need to voluntarily re-turn to Mexico. That will not happen because we are indigenous….here to stay and belong.

As Latinos, we must have the drive, and the faith, to master the many principles of modern science, technol-ogy, engineering, and math. (STEM). Our forefathers had mastered them and had used them to build edifices and temples which may be viewed even today.

Know that it was a Mexi-can mathemetician who described the concept of ‘zero’ (nada) which enabled European mathemeticians to connect negaitive num-bers to positive numbers with the result that an im-portant step was accom-plished which enabled the creation of calculus. Many who saw the movie “Stand and Deliver” where an epic story of a Latin teacher in East Los Angeles was able to teach barrio students mathematics to a level of understanding that enabled them to perform, with ex-pertise, which national and local school officials would not accept as being possible. What that teacher instilled in his students was the faith of accomplishment which enabled total understand-ing.

His teaching methods were adapted slowly by mainstream education authorities. Today, we are being asked to ‘Stand and Deliver’ because the cur-rent society and economy is failing because of greed and corruption, much of which is ‘legal’ because the purpose and intent of the U.S.Constitution has been thwarted. This can be cor-rected, but it will take a persevering concerted ef-fort to correct the current misdistribution of the natu-ral wealth and abundance which exists on this planet Earth.

Let me tell you why many of us are people of ‘Faith’. We are furtunate to live in ‘Silicon Valley’ where many virtual natural phenom-enon are exploited to en-able eletronic devices, e.g., ‘smart phones’, computers, etc. Consider that we all are accustomed to the reliabil-ity of these electronic sys-tems and devices. I ask you now to consider the ‘elec-tron’ which physicists tell us is a ‘negative particle, hav-ing almost no mass’. None of us have ever seen an electron, yet we rely upon it with great faith. It performs what it does according to its nature without fail. Elec-tricity is defined as ‘a flow of electrons’.

It also enables comput-ers to work because when an electron is in a ‘field’, that field is negative; when not there, that field is posi-tive. It is on this natural phenomenon, which man did not create, and which exists throughout the uni-verse, that became the bi-nary numeric system which became the basis of any and all programs. MicroSoft, In-tel, Adobe, and many other firms are successful because they correctly use these nat-ural phenomenon. Without knowing it, their technical staffs are people of great faith and rely upon natural phenomenon.

Let’s get back to Our Lady of Guadalupe. Back in 1530, Juan Diego, an indig-enous person, was asked to be the Virgin’s messenger. In 1999, Pope John Paul II proclaimed the Virgin Mary Patroness of the Americas, Empress of Latin America, and Protectress of Unborn Children. I recommend you google ‘Our Lady of Guadalupe’, find and read the history by Dr. Marcel-lino D’Ambrosio based on original documents wriiten in Nahuatl recording these miracles.∆

SACRAMENTO

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Tor-lakson announced the selec-tion of two remarkable Cali-fornia high school students as delegates, along with two alternates, to the highly com-petitive United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP).

Josephine Kao of Rosevi-

lle (Placer County), a student at Mira Loma High School in the San Juan Unified School District, and Deeksha Goyal of Redlands (San Bernar-dino County), a student at Redlands East Valley High School in the Redlands Uni-fied School District, were se-lected for their outstanding scholastic achievement, lea-dership qualities, and strong commitment to their schools and communities.

The first alternate is Anna

Page of San Diego (San Die-go County), a student at Mt. Carmel High School in the Poway Unified School Dis-trict, and second alternate is Stefano Rumi of Los Ange-les (Los Angeles County), a student at the Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies in the Los Angeles Unified School District. .

“I’m amazed at what the-

se four outstanding young people have accomplished,” Torlakson said. “They are among California’s as well as the nation’s top scholars, and I applaud their achie-

vements, both inside and outside the classroom. They are leaders and champions and, most impressive of all, they are dedicated to helping others and strengthening their communities.”

Students must be nomi-nated by their high school principal to participate in the program. A selection com-mittee from the California Department of Education (CDE) reviewed eligible no-minees and Torlakson selec-ted the awardees based on the

the quality of the application, high academic achievement, interpersonal and commu-nication skills, knowledge of American government and U.S. history, involvement in school and community acti-vities, demonstrated qualities of leadership, extracurricular activities, and service to the community.

The four students are sche-duled to be recognized by the State Board of Education du-ring its January 16-17, 2013 meeting in Sacramento.

The festive spirit of the holidays comes in all forms. From parties and traditional holiday outings, to elaborate family gatherings, there is a lot to celebrate. But, in truth, it takes a lot of work to make an unforgettable holiday. One of the biggest tasks on everyone’s to-do list is shop-ping for gifts, which can be both time consuming and expensive.

Luckily for shoppers, a bit of strategy and planning can add ease to the daunting task of shopping. When you’ve got everyone’s wish lists tallied, try these tips for making your holiday shopping merrier:

* Find the best prices: Ho-liday budgets need to stretch to ensure everyone gets the gifts they love. That means shopping for the best values on multiple items is most important. In some cases, retailers bundle gift items to help shoppers get more for their money. Office Depot, for instance, will offer acces-sory bundles for touchscreen devices like iPhones and An-droid phones, as well as for Windows 8 and Android ta-blets predicted to be some of the hottest gifts this holiday season. Bundles truly make it simple to save without sacrifi-cing on the quality of the gifts you give.

* Prioritize one-stop shop-ping: Dashing from store to

store can cost a lot in terms of time and hassle and gas, es-pecially with the heavy traffic and crowded parking lots du-ring the holidays. With a bit of planning and research, you can cut the waste by getting your shopping done in fewer locations or, ideally, just one place. Whether you’re shop-ping for a business-driven workaholic, a plugged-in teen or family-focused grandpa-rents, retailers are making the effort to help you cover all your bases in just one stop. Asking a store employee for assistance can also help save time, as they can point you to the right places and provide recommendations on pro-ducts that might meet your needs better than others.

* Don’t forget that ship-ping is a factor: The prospect of a trip to the post office du-ring the holidays is daunting. If you can’t get there during the middle of the workday,

you’ll be faced with long lines during peak traffic timesand that can eat up a lot of your valuable time. Instead of fa-cing the wait, look for options that are kinder to your al-ready hectic schedule. Shop-pers at retailers like Office Depot can send gifts and pac-kages without even leaving the store, as well as during weekends and late evenings once the Post Office is closed, at a full service shipping desk, with both U.S. Postal Service and UPS options. Online shoppers should also look for low-cost or free shipping, which will help cut back on both costs and time.

There is a lot that goes into smart shopping, but if you can incorporate these tips du-ring the year-end craze, you’ll be on your way to a happier holiday. Follow these tips and you’ll be happy with the time and money you save while holiday shopping this season.

Holiday shopping strategies: save time, save money

Planning can ease the task of getting holiday shopping done.

As a Naval Base, Pearl Harbor sits quietly in a beautiful port in the Hawai-ian island of Oahu and un-til the events that occurred on December 7th, 1941 the lagoon harbor managed to avoid any type of hostile situation. At first established to assist American citizens in the whaling industry and provide some type of general security for Hawaii in the late 1800’s Pear Harbor was a quiet base whose activity was generally to dock U.S. ships and perform mainte-nance.

According to the official Pearl Harbor site, Japan had sought out to take over Asia. By the late 1930’s it was be-coming a real possibility. After the United States, the Netherlands and Great Brit-ain worried about Japans pursuits there was a freez-ing of Japanese assets. Not wanting to halt their ambi-tions, General Hideki Tojo decided to go through with its takeover. After the U.S. began producing for the war effort, Tojo saw our country as a threat. This is how the initial plans for an attack to the Hawaiian base were started. Being his countries Prime Minister General Tojo was able to outline and

execute his imperialistic plans with ease.

Calculated and precise, the 2-hour attack left a total of 3,500 Americans dead or wounded. It took place in the early morning of December 7th, 1941 and started with a first wave that decimated the U.S.S. Arizona and left her crew of 1,177 dead. The heartbreak of these senseless deaths was engulfed along with emotions of anger and confusion. The U.S. was not in any war and out of all places Pearl Harbor was not prepared or able to defend itself from this attack.

Four days after the De-

cember 7th attack the United States formally declared war on Japan and Germany, thus thrusting one of the greatest superpowers into a war that would see a dra-matic shift because of their involvement, as well as that from Russia in the East. This propulsion into the war made the U.S. the most eco-nomically powerful country in the world from that mo-ment forward.

In the end General Hideki Tojo was tried by an Inter-national Military Tribunal for the Far East, and was hung on December 23rd, 1948 for his war crimes. His acts caused the deaths of all

those at Pearl Harbor and his own people. The result-ing bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which totaled 246,000 casualties, could have been avoided had he complied with the several countries who were against his takeover of China.

These days we can look back at the memorials, the mostly unrealistic Holly-wood films, or the inter-views and news clippings of the event. All these stories commemorate a time where peace was shaken and the alliances of the people of the U.S. were tested. Neighbors turned on each other for being Japanese and inter-

ments occurred. Even here in the bay area there were camps that hosted these Japanese families.

In 1944 the U.S.S. Mis-souri was christened and left the San Francisco Bay Area to fight in the East during World War II. It was the last battleship to be built by the United States. It was also the ship where Japan for-mally surrendered on. These days it sits unperturbed in Hawaii, welcoming visitors and wonderers who can stand in historical sites and remember the people who sacrificed and fought for our country. At last there is peacefulness.

On Saturday December 1, Applied Materials held its 17th annual “Helping Hands Day”, an event where em-ployees and their families joined together to give back to the community by assem-bling and packing 6,000 boxes filled with 118,680 pounds of food, which the company distributed to low income families and indi-viduals across Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties.

“Applied traditionally runs one of the largest cor-porate food drives and em-ployees across the company join together to donate their time, food and funds,” said Amaya Weigert, Media Re-lations, Corporate Commu-nications, at Applied Mate-rials. “Approximately 300 employees and their fami-lies gathered in 12 assembly lines to help assemble and pack 6,000 boxes of tradi-tional holiday meals. In the

17 years Applied has done this event, employees have packed a total of 60,000 boxes.”

The Applied Materi-als Foundation funded the purchase of food, which was selected by Applied’s long-time community partner Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara, and San Mateo Counties. The event took place at Second Har-vest’s new Cypress Center, which serves as their volun-teer and fresh produce hub.

“Second Harvest distrib-utes the food to individuals and families in need across Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties through a network of more than 300 nonprofit agencies,” Weigert said.

“The 6,000 boxes packed at the event will result in approximately 118,680 pounds of food which, in addition to fresh milk, chicken, tortillas and pro-duce which will also be

distributed, equates to ap-proximately 188,231 meals.”

Last year’s drive efforts were valued at $1 million and enabled benefiting food banks to deliver 2 million meals in local communi-ties. Helping Hands is just one of the many activities employees participate in to support the food drive. Others include spaghetti feeds, pie throws, bake sales and candy grahams to raise funds, and group volunteer shifts sorting food at the food bank.

“Applied has been an ac-tive member of the com-munity for more than 30 years,” Weigert said. “Each year, Applied Materials and its Foundation donate ap-proximately $5M to local organizations focused on education, the arts, the en-vironment, and civic devel-opment.”

1. Take care of yourself by eating right. People tend to skip meals, eat on the run, and eat more sugar during the holidays. Manage stress by managing your health.

2. Give yourself permission to feel a mix of emotions during the holidays. Most people feel an ebb and flow of emotions throughout the year, but often more so dur-ing holidays because it is a season that evokes memories of the past.

6. Share responsibilities. Ask for help. Delegate holi-day tasks so you’re not over-stressed with deadlines.

7. Don’t have unrealistic ex-pectations about what you can and can’t do during the holidays. Give yourself cred-it for what you can do and recognize you’re not super human. When you do, you’ll have a more enjoyable holi-day season.

The holidays are all about spending time with loved ones. With so many big holiday meals to plan and prepare, you may be looking for ways to save time in the kitchen. Luckily, there are plenty of easy strategies and recipes that can help. The key is to simplify your holiday menu by planning to use some of the same ingredients in your appetizers, main dishes and even breakfast. For example, Pillsbury Crescent Rolls offer a great base for a variety of traditional recipes from Ham and Cheese Crescent Roll-Ups for brunch, to Pinwheel appetizers in the evening.

With Pillsbury Crescent Rolls, you can plan ahead and greet guests with warm, inviting appetizers that have a short prep time – like Bacon-Cheddar Pinwheels. So instead of chips and dip this holiday season, try this recipe that’s big on taste, easy on effort and sure to fly off the tray:

Bacon-Cheddar Pinwheels(Makes 16 pinwheels)

1 can (8 oz) Pillsbury refrigerated crescent dinner rolls or 1can (8 oz) Pillsbury Crescent Recipe Creations refrigerated seamless dough sheet.

2 tablespoons ranch dressing

1/4 cup cooked real bacon pieces or 4 slices bacon, crisply cooked, crumbled

1/2 cup finely shredded cheddar cheese (2 oz)

1/4 cup chopped green onions (4 medium)

• Heat oven to 350 degrees F. If using crescent rolls: Unroll dough; separate into 2 long rectangles. Press each into 12x4-inch rectangle, firmly pressing perforations to seal. If using dough sheet: unroll dough; cut lengthwise into 2 long rectangles. Press each into 12x4-inch rectangle.

• Spread dressing over each rec-tangle to edges. Sprinkle each with bacon, cheddar cheese and onions. Starting with one short side, roll up each rectangle; press edge to seal. With a serrated kni-fe, cut each roll into 8 slices; place cut side down on ungreased coo-kie sheet.

• Bake 12 to 17 minutes or until edges are deep golden brown. Immediately remove from cookie sheet. Serve warm.

Office parties, friend’s parties, family gatherings, it seems that everyone and their grandma are having some type of celebration for Christmas. Oh what a joyous time to spend with family, friends and coworkers bick-ering at the most petty stuff. Come on, I know most of you do it, don’t lie to yourselves.

It’s this season that I find it to be the most fascinating of them all, when everyone dresses in their most glamor-ous duds (or so they think) for the many holiday parties they get invited to. Now, if you don’t want to be the one person people are going to be talking about for all the wrong reasons, then follow my simple advice and do your homework before stepping out the door looking like a Christmas tree.

When it comes to holiday parties the same philosophy applies as to everyday wear, “DRESS TO IMPRESS.” If you don’t feel good wearing what you’re wearing, you will not look good wearing it ei-ther. Simple as that.

Choosing the right en-semble depends on what type of party you’re attending. If it’s an office party you have to make sure you look your best without going the slutty route. Don’t give your bitchy coworkers one more reason to hate on you.

Whether you’re on the skinny or more voluptuous side, opt for a dress that says “I’m classy and sexy, eat your heart out bitches!” As far as color goes, nothing says ‘sexy hot’ more than red. If you have small breasts go for a plunging neckline, skinny girls can get away with this type of dress. If you have large puppies then don’t show them as much. Opt for a peplum dress to take at-tention away from your chest. Remember that you don’t want the wrong type of atten-

tion.Family gatherings are

more lax. You can pretty much wear whatever you feel like because, no matter what you put on, your siblings are going to grill you no matter what. So just put on whatever makes you feel good and com-fortable and take a chill pill. Family gatherings are meant to be enjoyed with your loved ones no matter how annoying you might find them to be. One thing you will definitely need is the best accessory of them all, your smile.

Friend’s Christmas gath-erings are a whole different beast, or should I say Grinch? Stick to your style and dress to feel comfortable and to impress. Your friends are just as judgmental as your enemies; the only difference is that your friends will tell you what they really think straight to your face. So avoid crazy outfits and Santa hats, leave those for the kids, grab a fancy scarf and nice coat and arrive in style. Command attention as soon as you step into the party and wear your nicest casual clothes, yes ca-sual.

Friend’s parties are usu-ally at a house therefore giv-

ing you the liberty of dress-ing more relaxed. Also, if you overdress you’ll stand out from the rest like a sore thumb and people will think of you as a stuck up a-hole. So put on a nice pair of jeans and some killer pumps with a sparkly top and party the night away in the company of your good friends.

If all fails and you still have no idea of what to wear, it doesn’t hurt to hire someone that will give you great ad-vice and will help you find the great outfit—preferably someone who doesn’t know you. Hiring a stylist doesn’t mean you have to spend a ton of money. There are many stylists out there that will give you a great rate and will help you figure out what looks good on you without making a hole in your wallet. The best part when hiring a stylist is that they know what they’re doing and they’ll work with you to find the perfect style for you. Here is my Christmas present to you. Visit AlterE-goAura today for great advice and to schedule an appoint-ment to learn how to dress for the time of your life— the consultation is practically a steal!

“Ho, ho, ho!” What is Your Christmas Outfit Really Saying About You?
