When you think of Internet-based business, you probably think of businesses selling to
individual customers. It may surprise you to learn that business-to-business e-commerce is the
fastest growing area of e-commerce and outpaces consumer retailing by millions of dollars.
You may also be under the impression that e-commerce is dead because of all the bad publicity
about the dot-com bust in 2000 - 200. !ere"s the latest from the #.$. %ensus &ureau"s Web site
regarding the third 'uarter 200( e-commerce statistics)
*he %ensus &ureau of the +epartment of %ommerce announced today that the estimate
of #.$. retail e-commerce sales for the third 'uarter of 200(, adusted for seasonal
variation and holiday and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, was ./
billion, an increase of (. percent 1.3 from the second 'uarter of 200(. *otal retail
sales for the third 'uarter of 200( were estimated at 4/.5 billion, an increase of .(
percent 10.63 from the second 'uarter of 200(. *he third 'uarter 200( e-commerce
estimate increased 2.5 percent 16.03 from the third 'uarter of 2006 while total retail
sales increased /.2 percent 10.53 in the same period. 7-commerce sales in the third
'uarter accounted for .4 percent of total sales.
8n a not adusted basis, the estimate of #.$. retail e-commerce sales for the third 'uarter
of 200( totaled /.5 billion, an increase of 5.( percent 1.3 from the second 'uarter
of 200(. *he third 'uarter 200( e-commerce estimate increased 2.2 percent 16.03
from the third 'uarter of 2006 while total retail sales increased /.5 percent 10.53 in the
same period. 7-commerce sales in the third 'uarter of 200( accounted for .9 percent of
total sales.

to make most, if not all, information available across all divisions and to the outside world.
Internet Technology and the Digital Firm
*he Internet has proved to be the perfect vehicle for the new information infrastructure re'uired
by the digital firm because of its open standards and structure. Bo other methodology or
technology has proven to work as well as the Internet for distributing information and bringing
people together. It"s cheap and relatively easy to use the Internet as the conduit for connecting
customers, suppliers, and employees of a firm. Cery few products have been created that allow
an organiAation to erase the lines between divisions and disseminate information to anyone and
everyone as the Internet.
