Kings High School Principal Doug Mader announced

Class of 2014 and will be this year’s Valedictorian. Eng-
land will be joined by Daniel Woodall as Salutatorian.
Taylor is the daughter of Tina and Greg Thompson.
She plays Lacrosse and soccer. Taylor graduates with a
Grade Point Average of 4.638. She will attend the Unit-
ed States Military Academy at West Point. Daniel is the son of Beatriz and Robert
Woodall. He likes to run, hike, play video games, and play chess. He will be graduating
with a GPA of 4.609. He plans to study Engineering at the University of Illinois in Cham-
paign.
This year’s Kings High School Graduation will be held at the Cintas Center at Xavier Uni-
versity on May 24th at 11:00 a.m.
Kings High School has
been ranked as being
among the most chal-
lenging in the U.S.,
according to a recent
list from the Washing-
ton Post. The schools
rankings are based on
an index score which
is calculated by divid-
ing the number of col-
lege-level tests given
in the previous calen-
dar year by the num-
ber of graduates that
year. Also included in
the rankings are the
number of students
who qualify for lunch
subsidies and the per-
centage of graduates
who passed at least
one college-level test
during their high
school career. To see

Congratulations KHS!
The Southwest District of the Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administra-
tors Association has selected Kings Athletic Director, Phil Poggi to re-
place Tim Cook on the OIAAA Board of Directors. Phil has been serving
on the OIAAA Executive Board as the Exhibitor Vendor Chair. Phil will
continue serving as the Vendor Chair while fulfilling Cook’s remaining 3
year term.
The OIAAA was founded in 1956 by several Ohio high school athletic administrators. The
OIAAA Executive Board has four voting officers (Past-President, President, President-
elect and Secretary), two non-voting officers (Treasurer and Executive Director), six vot-
ing representatives (one from each of the six Ohio districts) and several non-voting com-
mittee chairs. Officers and District Representatives serve four year terms with a designat-
ed rotation of officers from among the six districts.
Congratulations Phil on yet another honor and for representing Kings in such a great way!

KHS Students Attend Etiquette Workshop
Students from Mrs. Thomas's Family and Consumer Science Classes at
Kings High School attended an Etiquette Workshop at the Oasis Cen-
ter in Loveland. Morning session consisted of proper business eti-
quette for the professional world and included topics such as greetings
and introductions, the art of conversation, communication etiquette,
interviewing, personal hygiene and appropriate dress, dating eti-
quette, and thank-you notes.
The second session included step by step dining etiquette for a four
course meal consisting of soup, salad, entrée, and dessert. Students
were instructed on the proper use of napkins, learned what the different utensils were used for and how to use them
properly, correct way to pass food and other items around the table, proper way to eat bread, how to let the waiter
know you are finished with each course, how to handle awkward situations, among many other things.

SLE Toys, Tots, & Tafts
Kerry Wood from the William Howard Taft Home and Nation-
al Park visited the Second Grade classes at South Lebanon
Elementary yesterday. The children learned how William
Howard Taft and his siblings spent their family recreations
growing up in Mount Auburn during the 1850’s time period.
He explained to the students how Taft and his family valued
the simple things in life from reading Aesop’s Fables, and
playing with old wooden toys to strong family values dis-
played to him that would lead him to become a very im-
portant figure in American History.
JFB Winners Walk Tall
Winners Walk Tall is a program run by Kings High
School National Honor Society. Members of the NHS
travel to KME and JFB each year to meet with elemen-
tary students to teach virtues and character building.
The honor students work on lessons and implement
their lessons into the classrooms. Pictured are stu-
dents from KHS National Honor Society teaching J. F.
Burns Elementary second graders a lesson on manners
this week.

KME 4th Grade Etiquette Luncheon
For the past several weeks, the 4th graders at Kings Mills Ele-
mentary have been taking Etiquette classes with Anne Over-
turf. Mrs. Overturf began by teaching the students the 7
Knightly Virtues of courage, justice, mercy, generosity, trust,
nobility and hope. They learned how and when to write thank
you notes, polite phone manners, conversationskills, proper
eating etiquette and much more. After learning all their man-
ners, students finished the unit with an Etiquette Luncheon at the Kings Island Conference Center and Resort. All of
the students practiced perfect manners while eating a four course meal. The students were taught that when a lady
left the table, the gentlemen stood up. The students agreed that the new skills would serve them well in life, espe-
cially as they get older and start working. Thanks to everyone who made the Etiquette Luncheon a big success. It was
a wonderful event, and all of the students were very well mannered.
Jim “Basketball” Jones Wows CIS

Mime Visits J. F. Burns
2nd graders at J.F. Burns explored creative writing through a
lively, humorous show by a Mime artist. They discovered
the difference between writing for the stage and writing for
the page. Back in the classroom, students wrote their own
stories, which the performer acted out during an afternoon
assembly.

Getting Ready for the Ohio Achievement Assessments
Students in fifth grade at Columbia Intermediate are gearing up for the OAA’s. To help them review the topic of Vol-
ume, they made it personal by finding the volume of their own mouths. Students held as much water as possible in
their mouths and measured that amount using a graduated cylinder. When they were done, they used unit cubes to
construct a rectangular prism that had an equivalent volume to their mouths. They found some very big and surpris-
ingly, very small mouths!

Dave Segrist Annual Golf Outing
Former Kings teacher and coach Dave
Segrist lost his battle with pancreatic can-
cer on May 30, 2011. A fund was founded
in his name to offer financial support for
seniors wanting to continue their educa-
tion at the collegiate level, and it also
helps to support underprivileged kids who
want the opportunity to attend education-
al or athletic camps during the summer.
Last year, three 2013 Kings seniors re-
ceived money towards their college educa-
tion because of Dave’s fund.
To help support this fund, an annual bene-
fit golf outing is held yearly. This year, the
benefit takes place on May 31, 2014 at the
Golf Center at Kings Island. Click here for
more information.

Sinclair Tech Prep Showcase 2014
Students in Cassandra Mahan’s Digital Media Arts classes partici-
pated in Sinclair Community College’s Tech Prep Showcase last
Friday, April 11th. The Showcase features projects from 15 Ohio
career fields. The Tech Prep programs stress mathematics, sci-
ence, communication, and technology while emphasizing team-
work, hands-on learning, work site experiences, critical thinking,
and problem solving. Over 350 students from 16 high schools
and career centers participated in the Showcase. KHS Juniors
Gabe Mattaridi and Frederick Schweinlin came home first place
champions for Junior Media Arts Video Production.
The Showcase provides students with the opportunity to network
with other consortium students and to interact with judges from education, business, industry, and labor.
J.F. Burns Fist Grade Getting Ready for Easter
Students in Mrs. Sova's 1st grade class created their own version of an
Easter Egg. They cut an egg shape out of white construction paper.
Then, while in art class, the students used magazines to search for
different images out of their chosen color. Once they found enough
images to cover their egg, the students used a glue stick and over-
lapped the images to create a collage. Great job!

Writing Can Be Delicious!
Recently, the students in Tina Strosneider’s 3rd grade class at Kings Mills Elementary, wrote
letters to their favorite restaurant. They had to tell why that particular restaurant was their
favorite. Mrs. Strosneider mailed the letters and included a note asking the restaurant to
respond, if possible. They received replies from several restaurants, but Chipotle responded
in a big way! Upon receiving a “Very Amazing Letter,” from 3rd grader Quinten Burns, Take
Out Specialist, Adam Johnson of the Kings Mills Chipotle, decided to honor this great com-
pliment on January 16, 2014. In his letter, Quinten wrote, “I love eating at Chipotle. The
lines are short and you are very nice. You are close to me and I like that.”
Quinten received vouchers for his family to eat for free! The teachers at KME and the whole
third grade also were able to take advantage of the buy one get one free on that day. The
third grade teachers received extra certificates as well. The event was well attended by KME students and staff, as
well as family and friends of Quentin.

United Way Summer Book Drive
The United Way of Warren County’s Summer Book Drive is underway. The United Way is trying to
gather new or gently used books to help distribute to at risk students in the community. For some
kids, summer is a world of interesting vacations, sporting activities, and library trips. For others,
something harmful is waiting for them, and their parents may not even know it is out there. It is
called the “summer slide” and it describes what happens when young minds sit idle for three months.
Unfortunately, reading loss is cumulative; children who lose reading skills over the summer have the potential of be-
ing two or more years behind their more affluent peers by the end of 6th grade. For children, summer is supposed to
be fun and carefree, but that does not mean that learning needs to stop. Summer is a great time for children to read
books while having fun.
How can you help? The Kings Local School District is partnering with the United Way of Warren County by placing
Donation Boxes in each of our schools. From now until April 30, 2014, we will be collecting books to help with the
“summer slide.” Kings CAN make a difference in Warren County!
