ELECTROLYSIS OF WATER

ELECTROLYSIS OF WATER

Antonio Beltrn Lira

OBJECTIVE

To prove the process of electrolysis of water, as well as show the decomposition of water into its main components by means of a scientific experiment.

INTRODUCTION

Many techniques have been used to produce hydrogen. Although some of these methods, such as the electrolysis of water, are efficient in terms of the recovery of hydrogen, there has been considerable interest in the development of a suitable method for the next generation of energy sources because its way into the environment.

PROBLEM

The electrolysis of water is the decomposition of water into oxygen and hydrogen by the effect of an electric current. With the investigation it was learned that the amount of generated hydrogen is twice that of oxygen, and both are proportional to the total electrical charge that was sent by the water.JUSTIFICATION

This project is done with the purpose of finding out how to separate the water from the hydrogen through water electrolysis method for learning about how manages to break down water into two simpler materials.

HYPOTHESIS

The electrolysis of water is an electrochemical process in which water splits into hydrogen and oxygen.Electrolysis consists of passing electric current through two electrodes, a cathode that is negative and an anode which is positive.By subjecting the substance to the current both electrodes submit detachment of gases, in cathode detaches the hydrogen gas, while for the anode will drop off the oxygen gas.

METHODOLOGYPrepare three solutions of potassium sulphate from 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 m in three aforacion 250 ml.

The tube "U" with this solution and will add 20 drops of the universal indicator dye.

Subsequently the wires are connected to the electrodes through the Caymans. Applies a voltage of 10 volts which each will be in triplicate and be pulled out its average.RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONThe electrolysis of water is the decomposition of water into oxygen and hydrogen by the effect of an electric current.Electrolysis is a method of separation of hydrogen and oxygen in H2O.The procedure takes cell, anion and cation. With research, it was learned that the amount of generated hydrogen is twice that of oxygen.Oxygen left on one side of the cell and the hydrogen on the other and to check the side was lit from the hydrogen, causing a small flame.

CONCLUSIONSConnect the electrodes to the supply voltage, the dissolution will result in ionic migration, in which anions will head to the anode (+) and cations towards the cathode (-). Migration involves a neutralization of charges, since in the electrodes; the ions gain or lose electrons, becoming neutral atoms.
