WHAT IS ELECTRICITY? The movement of electrons that leave their atoms and go to other atoms. Electrons are negative charged particles that are small.

Electricity flows through almost anything that is in your house. Most of the time you can't see it in your house so the most common ones you can see is lightning, sparks and

static.

The dangers of

electricity

Electricity is capable of harming you.You could get extreme burnes,

and be in the hospital for a few days.

HOW TO BE

SAFE

● water and electricity do NOT mix!its always a good idea to keep water away from things that are plugged in.

● Your parents might have little plastic covers over your outlets, they are there for your protection and you shouldn't

mess with them

Don't put fingers or objects into an electrical outlet, toaster, or any other appliance, even it it's off.

Don't use appliances - and appliance cords - near bathtubs and sinks.

Don't climb trees near power lines.

Can you think of any other ways to be safe with electricity?

How Electricity Travels MH

● Electricity travels in a loop called a circuit.●

● A circuit has an energy source and wires●● Your Home is a large energy circuit. There is a

complete circuit.

Where electricity comes from A.T.

Movement of a loop of wire or a disk of copper in the middle of a magnet. Magnet is turned by a shaft.

What uses electricity?

Almost everything in your home uses electricity.

Can you think of anything else that uses electricity?

● Televisions

● Gaming systems

● Radios

● Ovens...

Let me show you how much electricity one item uses!

Kilowatts● – the unit used to measure electric energy● – there are 1,000 watts in one kilowatt

Kilowatt Hour– this measurement refers to the use of 1,000 watts of electricity in one hour● 1kWh = ten 100 watt bulbs all burning at the same

time for one hour

Tip: Anywhere you have your lights run for a long period time and the light bulbs are incandescent change it for CFL light bulbs to use less energy and save money.

How can we save this energy we use

How can we save this energy we use?

First off, leaving one light bulb on for 4 hours is the same cost as one tootsie roll.

The first, and easiest way to save

electricity is by simply turning your lights

off when you leave the room, or when

you have alternative light. For example

if the sun is up light up your room that

The second way you can save energy is

by never turning up the heat on the

thermostat this winter, instead just put on a

sweater and blankets.

The last tip I am going to leave you

with is take quicker showers. On

average a 20 minute shower uses

100 gallons of water. Heating all that

water takes a lot of electricity.

Page 31: Electricity - Clean Energy Resource Teams€¦ · WHAT IS ELECTRICITY? The movement of electrons that leave their atoms and go to other atoms. Electrons are negative charged particles

February 12, 2013

As we enter into a new decade, the Earth is in danger from all sides. Pollution, energy loss, destruction of the environment, all seem to be tearing the world apart.

However, the biggest threat to the Earth is also its best hope.

People.

This class is designed to let YOU determine which areas the You feel you can help in and which direction that help should take.

YES is also a study on the ability of think logically and to see connections in the information that is all around us.

It also impresses friends and dates to no end. Trust me.

Page 32: Electricity - Clean Energy Resource Teams€¦ · WHAT IS ELECTRICITY? The movement of electrons that leave their atoms and go to other atoms. Electrons are negative charged particles

February 12, 2013

The only way that can happen is if you do 3 things:

1. CARE ABOUT THE SUBJECT

2. Respect the people around you

3. Put the time in.

Page 33: Electricity - Clean Energy Resource Teams€¦ · WHAT IS ELECTRICITY? The movement of electrons that leave their atoms and go to other atoms. Electrons are negative charged particles

February 12, 2013

Things you can get out of the class.

1. immediate ways to save money.2. A perspective on how inter connected the planet is.3. A change to make a lasting affect on WWG4. Career options

Page 34: Electricity - Clean Energy Resource Teams€¦ · WHAT IS ELECTRICITY? The movement of electrons that leave their atoms and go to other atoms. Electrons are negative charged particles

February 12, 2013

This class is basically two classes in one. We will split the class into a concept class and a contest class

In the CONCEPT phase, we will look at issues of interest in the environmental world. I do not know much about these, so we will be learning together

In the CONTEST phase, we will be designing and building projects to show to the community, to help the environment, and finally to impress the judges

These will alternate days

Through experiential and educational endeavors, the WWG Y.E.S. Group strives to make a difference in our local society by changing our habits into the values that we want to pass onto the future generation.

JUDGING CRITERIA1. Usefulness: Is your project feasible? Practical? Can it be repeated elsewhere?

2. Teamwork and goal setting: Did the group set reasonable, clearly defined and attainable goals? Did you show flexibility and willingness to adapt to changes? Did the team work together well to meet challenge? Were all student members engaged and involved?

3.Creativity and Innovation:Did you show a new way of addressing challenges?Did you us innovative technologies and ideasDid you use existing resources and technologies in creative ways?

4.Community involvement:Did the team reach out to people, organizations, and businesses? How many people did your project effect? How deeply were people effected by your work?

Page 37: Electricity - Clean Energy Resource Teams€¦ · WHAT IS ELECTRICITY? The movement of electrons that leave their atoms and go to other atoms. Electrons are negative charged particles

February 12, 2013

5.ENERGY CONSERVATION:Did the team address conservation as an essential part of the energy solutions? How much energy has been saved by your project, or will be in the future?IS IT MEASURABLE?

JUDGING CRITERIA

6.Economic IMPACT:Was the team's work related to business expansion, startup or research?Does your project have significant potential to generate money or save money?

7. Skills and Career awareness:Team members had a good understanding of workforce skills, emerging careers and /or entrepreneurship.

What matters most to the people and places of your community?

How can we find out from our communities what they want and need, so our project can meet REAL needs?

PRINCIPLES We will

•· Begin on time and end on time. •· Attend all meetings

•· Respect questions. •· Monitor your own airtime. •· Stay on agenda. •· Do assignments prior to meetings. •· Hold yourself personally accountable. •· Observe basic conversational courtesies. •· Attend to goals and objectives. •· Listen respectfully. •· Discuss issues, not people. •· Assume positive intentions.

Step 1Create clear purpose- your purpose needs to include:

1. What are we doing?

2. What is the goal?

3. Why are we doing this?

4. When will we know it has been reached?-

Page 43: Electricity - Clean Energy Resource Teams€¦ · WHAT IS ELECTRICITY? The movement of electrons that leave their atoms and go to other atoms. Electrons are negative charged particles

February 12, 2013

Step 22. Delegation of duties:

Captain - This person makes sure everyones option is heard. Sets meeting times and deadlines. Meets with teacher.

Recorder- Writes emails to teacher about what is happening and who is doing what. Everyone is still emailing teacher with individual assignments

Researcher, liaison, etc. these should change as project evolves

Page 44: Electricity - Clean Energy Resource Teams€¦ · WHAT IS ELECTRICITY? The movement of electrons that leave their atoms and go to other atoms. Electrons are negative charged particles

February 12, 2013

STEP 3Timeline- break project down into smaller parts and set end times

Example parts1. create a baseline (what is being done now or the current

state of events)2. Permission- Who needs to OK this before we start3. Tentative budget- what do we need to spend and when do we need it.4. Publicity- Who can we tell. Who big can we make it?5. P.R. - How are we answering the question "why should I help?"6. Research- What is the science or facts behind this? Is anyone else

doing it? Why will it work or not work?
