INTRODUCTION

Electric Power Service Rate Schedule Summaries - Western U. S.

The rate schedule tables contain summaries of electricpower schedules for companies serving the majority ofthe western U.S. land area. Companies servingmunicipalities only have not been included. The statemaps show approximate service area boundaries foreach utility as determined through a variety ofgovernment and industry sources.

Some companies have many different rateschedules for a variety of purposes. Only thoseschedules considered most applicable to the miningindustry are included here. Many of these schedulesare very complex. Space limitations prevent inclusionof any information other than that necessary for costestimating purposes. The power company should beconsulted when more specific details are needed. Some of these companies presently have no industrialcustomers and therefore no appropriate rate schedulesestablished. Often special contracts are written tocover such circumstances.

All charges listed in these schedules are monthlyunless stated otherwise. A typical monthly power billconsists of a fixed customer charge, plus a demandcharge based on the maximum 15 minute energy draw, and an energy charge calculated from the total KWH

consumed in the billing period. Many schedulesprovide for rate adjustments for the varying cost ofpower or fuel which must be purchased by the powercompany. Where these adjustments are identifiable inthe schedules provided, they have either been includedin the energy charges or listed under "remarks".Adjustments in parenthesis are negative, i.e. creditedto the customer. Adjustments for varying local taxesare not included in this summary.

Some utilities offer discounts ranging from 2% to10% to customers taking delivery of power at primaryor transmission voltages. In these cases, the customermust maintain his own transformers and relatedequipment. Where these discounts could be identifiedfrom the rate schedules provided, they are listed under"remarks".

Charges sometimes vary according to time of day,day of week, and season of year. These are usuallylisted as "on-peak", "mid-peak" and "off-peak" rates.On-peak rates apply when the utility load iscustomarily greatest. Off-peak rates apply when theload is customarily least. Where detailed informationis required, the power company should be consulted.

INTRODUCTION (continued)

Estimator's Guide To Industrial Electric Power Rates - All U.S.

Following the western U.S. rate schedule table is theEstimator's Guide to Electric Power Rates. This tableprovides approximate prices per KWH for industrialpower at 9 demand levels, each with 2 monthlyconsumption rates, for power companies throughoutthe U.S. The prices are computed from data reportedin "Typical Bills and Average Rates Report, Winter2008" published by the Edison Electric Institute.Demand charges and base or customer charges areincluded with energy charges in the computed dollarsper KWH listed in the table. For this reason thevalues are accurate only at the stated demand andconsumption levels. Use of the data for estimatingelectric power costs at other demand or consumptionlevels should be done with considerable caution.

Fuel adjustments, commodity adjustments, and taxadjustments where the tax is imposed on the utility andnot on the customer, and other similar adjustments, have been included in the computations whereapplicable. Not included are sales taxes not coveredby the rate schedule, which are computed separately asprovided by law.

DefinitionsApparent power The mathematical product of thevolts and amperes of a circuit. The product is usuallydivided by 1,000 and designated in kilovolt amperes(KVA). It comprises both real and reactive power.

Connected load The sum of the capacities or ratingsof the electric power consuming equipment connectedto the supplying system, usually measured inhorsepower (HP).

Demand The rate at which electrical energy isdelivered, usually expressed in kilowatts (KW). Forbilling purposes, the peak demand for any 15, 30, or60 minute interval is usually used. The peak demandfrom a previous billing period, a contract amount, or apercentage of the connected load may also be used.

Energy As commonly used in the electric utilityindustry, energy means the amount of electric energymeasured in kilowatt hours (KWH).

Horsepower One horsepower (HP) is approximatelyequivalent to .746 kilowatt (KW).

Kilovoltampere (KVA) 1,000 voltamperes

Kilowatt (KW) 1,000 watts

Megawatt (MW) 1,000 kilowatts (1,000,000 watts)

Reactive power The portion of apparent power thatdoes no work. Reactive power must be supplied tomost types of magnetic equipment, such as motors.

Real power The energy or work producing part ofapparent power. It is the rate of supply of energy, measured commercially in kilowatts (KW). Theproduct of real power and length of time is energy, measured in kilowatt hours (KWH).

Voltampere The basic unit of apparent power. Thevoltamperes of an electric circuit are the mathematicalproduct of the volts and amperes of the circuit.

Watt The electrical unit of power or rate of doingwork. The rate of energy transfer equivalent to oneampere flowing under a pressure of one volt at unitypower factor.
