SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

Page 5: Electric Point of Use Water Heaters · Water Heaters Electric Point of Use The purpose of this manual is twofold: one, to provide the installer ... with the basic directions and recommendations

Installing the water heater. The location chosen for the water heater must take into consideration the following:

Local Installation RegulationsThis water heater must be installed inaccordance with these instructions, localcodes, utility codes, utility companyrequirements or, in the absence of localcodes, the latest edition of the National

Electrical Code. It is available from somelocal libraries or can be purchased fromthe National Fire Protection Association,Batterymarch Park, Quincy, MA 02269 asbooklet ANSI/NFPA 70.

LocationThis water heater is designed to meet awide range of applications. It fulfills ademand for a small water heater that can beinstalled in a limited space such as undercountertops, in cabinets or in a closet.

Locate the water heater in a clean dry areaas near as practical to hot water fixtures,or close to the water faucet mostfrequently used.

Locate the water heater in a clean dry areaas near as practical to the area of greatestheated water demand. Long uninsulated hotwater lines can waste energy and water.

Place the water heater in such a mannerthat the thermostat and element accesspanels can be removed to permitinspection and servicing such as removalof elements or checking controls.

The water heater and water lines should be protected from freezingtemperatures. Do not install the waterheater in outdoor, unprotected areas.

Make certain the floor underneath thewater heater is strong enough tosufficiently support the weight of thewater heater once it is filled with water.

CAUTION: The water heater should notbe located in an area where leakage of thetank or connections will result in damage tothe area adjacent to it or to lower floors ofthe structure. Where such areas cannot beavoided, it is recommended that a suitablecatch pan, adequately drained, be installedunder the water heater.

Page 6: Electric Point of Use Water Heaters · Water Heaters Electric Point of Use The purpose of this manual is twofold: one, to provide the installer ... with the basic directions and recommendations

Installing the water heater.Thermal Expansion

Water Supply Connections

Determine if a check valve exists in the inletwater line. It may have been installed in thecold water line as a separate back flowpreventer, or it may be part of a pressurereducing valve, water meter or water softener.A check valve located in the cold water inletline can cause what is referred to as a “closedwater system.” A cold water inlet line with nocheck valve or back flow prevention device isreferred to as an “open” water system. As water is heated, it expands in volume andcreates an increase in pressure within the watersystem. This action is referred to as “thermalexpansion.” In an “open” water system, expanding water which exceeds the capacity ofthe water heater flows back into the city mainwhere the pressure is easily dissipated. A “closed water system,” however, prevents theexpanding water from flowing back into themain supply line, and the result of “thermalexpansion” can create a rapid and dangerouspressure increase in the water heater and thesystem piping. This rapid pressure increase canquickly reach the safety setting of the relief

valve, causing it to operate during each heatingcycle. Thermal expansion, and the resultingrapid and repeated expansion and contraction ofcomponents in the water heater and pipingsystem can cause premature failure of the reliefvalve, and possibly the heater itself. Replacingthe relief valve will not correct the problem. The suggested method of controlling thermalexpansion is to install an expansion tank in thecold water line between the water heater andthe check valve. The expansion tank isdesigned with an air cushion built in thatcompresses as the system pressure increases, thereby relieving the over pressure conditionand eliminating the repeated operation of therelief valve. Other methods of controllingthermal expansion are also available. Contactyour installing contractor, water supplier, orplumbing inspector for additional informationregarding this subject.

NOTICE: Do not apply heat to the HOT or COLDwater connections. If sweatconnections are used, sweat tubingto adapter before fitting adapter tothe water connections on heater.Any heat applied to the watersupply fittings will permanentlydamage the dip tube and/or heattraps.

6

Refer to the illustrations on the followingpage for suggested typical installation. Theinstallation of unions or flexible copperconnectors is recommended on the hot andcold water connections so that the waterheater may be easily disconnected forservicing. Connect cold water supply line to3/4” pipe connection near bottom of waterheater on the 6 gallon and 20 gallon models.Install a shut-off valve and a drain valve(not supplied with heater, except 2 1/2 gal.

models) in cold water line near water heater.Connect hot water line to 3/4” pipeconnection marked HOT on side near top ofwater heater. On the 2 1/2 gallon models, the hot and cold water connections are 1/2”pipe connections and are located on top ofthe heater. Local codes may require an anti-siphon device on the water inlet of a sideconnect water heater.

Connect the outlet of the relief valve to asuitable open drain so that the dischargewater cannot contact live electrical parts orpersons and to eliminate potential waterdamage.

Piping used should be of a type approvedfor hot water distribution. The dischargeline must be no smaller than the outlet ofthe valve and must pitch downward fromthe valve to allow complete drainage (bygravity) of the relief valve and dischargeline. The end of the discharge line shouldnot be threaded or concealed and shouldbe protected from freezing. No valve ofany type, restriction or reducer couplingshould be installed in the discharge line.

A new combination temperature and pressure relief valve, complying with the Standard for ReliefValves and Automatic Gas Shut-Off Devices for Hot Water Supply Systems, ANSI Z21.22, is suppliedand must be installed in the opening provided and marked for the purpose on the water heater. Novalve of any type should be installed between the relief valve and the tank. Local codes shall govern theinstallation of relief valves.

To Fill the Water HeaterWARNING: The tank must be full of

water before heater is turned on. The waterheater warranty does not cover damage orfailure resulting from operation with anempty or partially empty tank.

Make certain the drain valve is completelyclosed.

Open the shut-off valve in the cold watersupply line.

Open each hot water faucet slowly toallow the air to vent from the water heaterand piping.

A steady flow of water from the hot waterfaucet(s) indicates a full water heater.

It is suggested that a routine preventivemaintenance program be established andfollowed by the user.

It is further recommended that a periodicinspection of the operating controls, heating element and wiring should bemade by service personnel qualified inelectric appliance repair.

Most electrical appliances, even whennew, make some sound when in operation. If the hissing or singing sound levelincreases excessively, the electric heatingelement may require cleaning. Contact aqualified installer or plumbing contract toinspect.

At least once a year, lift and release thelever handle on the temperature pressurerelief valve, located near the top of thewater heater, to make certain the valveoperates freely. Allow several gallons toflush through the discharge line to an opendrain.

A water heater’s tank can act as a settingbasin for solids suspended in the water.Itis therefore not uncommon for hard waterdeposits to accumulate in the bottom of thetank. It is suggested that a few quarts ofwater be drained from the water heater’stank every month to clean the tank ofthese deposits.

Rapid closing of faucets or solenoidvalves in automatic water using appliancescan cause a banging noise heard in a waterpipe. Strategically located risers in thewater pipe system or water hammerarresting devices can be used to minimizethe problem.

The anode rod should be removed from thewater heater’s tank annually for inspectionand replaced when more than 6″ of corewire is exposed at either end of the rod.

Make sure the cold water supply is turnedoff before removing anode rod.

NOTICE: Do not remove the anode rodfrom the water heater’s tank, except forinspection and/or replacement, as operationwith the anode rod removed will shortenthe life of the glass lined tank and willexclude warranty coverage.

Care and cleaning of the water heater.

Draining the Water HeaterCAUTION: Shut off power to the water

heater before draining water.

DANGER: Before manually operatingthe relief valve, make certain no one will beexposed to the hot water released by thevalve. The water drained from the tank maybe hot enough to present a scald hazard andshould be directed to a suitable drain toprevent injury or damage.

In order to drain the water heater, turn offthe cold water supply. Open a hot waterfaucet or lift the handle on the relief valveto admit air to the tank.

Attach a garden hose to the drain valve onthe water heater and direct the stream ofwater to a drain. Open the valve.

Vacation and Extended Shut-DownIf the water heater is to remain idle for anextended period of time, the power andwater to the appliance should be turned offto conserve energy and prevent a build-upof dangerous hydrogen gas.

The water heater and piping should bedrained if they might be subjected tofreezing temperatures.

After a long shut-down period, the waterheater’s operation and controls should bechecked by qualified service personnel.Make certain the water heater iscompletely filled again before placing it in operation.

NOTICE: Refer to theHydrogen Gas Caution in theOperating Instructions.

DANGER: Beforemanually operating the reliefvalve, make certain no one willbe exposed to the danger ofcoming in contact with the hotwater released by the valve. The water may be hot enoughto create a scald hazard. Thewater should be released into asuitable drain to preventinjury or property damage.

NOTICE: If the temperatureand pressure relief valve on the hot water heaterdischarges periodically, thismay be due to thermalexpansion in a closed watersystem. Contact the watersupplier or your plumbingcontractor on how to correctthis. Do not plug the reliefvalve outlet.
