    The circuit is built around an 89c52 core. The heart of this ckt is CS5460 which is a bidirectional energy measuring chip with

    built in dsp The measured value are stored in different registers inside the chip. This ic communicates on spi protocol .

    An 16X2 lcd is used for providing user interface . A memory ic 24c02 provides the provision for backing up the total usage on

    powerfail. For gsm communication SIM300 gsm modem with serial interface is used. First of all the peripheral devices must be initialised properly.For initialising lcd first

    the mode of operation must be selected properly.The measuring IC CS5460 is

    initialised by applying proper values in the control registers. The line voltage and the voltage proportional to the line current is fed to the input

    pins of the measurement IC CS 5460 through the voltage and current transformers. The power is calculated in the CS5460 by digital signal processors in every clock

    cycles. The calculated power is accesed by the micro controller using SPI bus.

    The power is stored in a microcontroller register and updated in each conversioncycle.

    The electrical bill is calculated as per the rate. This datas are stored in memory IC2402 using I2C bus.The datas are displayed

    in the LCD continuously for user interface. Whenever the service provider request for the data ie voltage,load,bill or usage. The controller responds after comparing command with each possible codes. The valid command formats are as follows :Request for current line voltage :Request for current load

    :Updates the rate :Request for total usage

    The existing billing system is human employed which is a time consumingprocedure and the metering device used is an electromechanical device.Thusthe metering procedure is prone to errors. The system that we have describedhere helps to overcome these kind of errors in the metering method.Thissystem utilises digital signal processing IC, which reduces error considerably.

    As solid state devices are used here, the system is more durable. It helps to detect and avoid electrical theft. This automated billing system uses GSM2G network for making the billing

    procedure simpler and cost effective. This system can effectively be used for online billing by connecting the service

    provider with the world wide web and SMS gateway. The subscriber can use any advanced banking methods such as credit cards,e-

    banking etc.
