Doctor Qudratullah Mujadadi, a lecturer at a Californian univer- sity, trained the doctors from Jag- hori district hospital in surgical procedures. In addition, he checked 20,000 prescriptions written out by doc- tors from 11 provinces. Of these, only 10 were correct. Mujadadi, who is of Afghan origin himself, said his reasons for train- ing the doctors was in the hope of reducing the maternal and child mortality rate in the country. “During this trip I taught the hospital doctors modern surgery and I worked with them and also brought some surgical equipment to the Jaghori district hospital,” Mujadadi said. He said unsafe traditions are the main reasons for maternal and child mortality especially as peo- ple take women to Mullahs and not to doctors. “Lots of traditional issues cause maternal and child mortality, most of the people take a preg- nant patient to the Mullah and the Mullah lashes them as they might have spirits in them, then often the [unborn] child and mother dies,” Mujadadi said. “In Jaghori when a boy is born they call the villagers together be- fore cutting the baby’s umbilical cord but this wait can lead to the child’s death,” Mujadadi said. Officials from the Shohada Foun- dation, that founded the hospital in Jaghori, praised Mujadadi for his work and said he has carried out 20 surgeries at their facility.
