Our task is to design a senior housing estate.Senior housing is not only physical shether for elderly, but most importantly a HOME for them to live physically and mentally healthily.

organic is a style and an attitude of living. It is to live lively, healthily and in a sustainable way. In the senior housing project, living organic is the main idea based on to develop the design. I want to archieve living organic by inserting diversity and energy to the housing area for living lively; creating chances to do exercises and meeting points for living healthily both physically and mentally; and introducing some management strategies for living sustainably.

S i t eThe proposed site area is in a potential triangular land between nature and residential area in Olofstorp, Gothenburg, Sweden

O r g a n i c f l o wIn the proposal, I tried to make good use the two existing features of the site: the landscape view and the livelihood activities. To live organic, cutting the site area with strong straight axis is not a preferable approach since it is a board and forced circulation to the residents. By trying not to put obvious roads to the site, residents can go from one place to another freely. The sheltered area provides a smooth flow through the area under protection when in need.

P u b l i c - S e m i p u b l i c - P r i v a t eThe area is zoned into three levels of privacies: public, semi-public and private. The public area is located near the existing neighborhood. In order to make the public area visible and easily approached by the visitors in the local community. So as to welcome the participation of the local residents and become a locus of the surrounding area. The semi public areas are the sub-communities which are surrounded by terrace houses. The entrances of the houses are facing the community. This is to promote easy social exchange between tenants. The private areas are the private houses and their gardens.

C o m m o n f a c i l i t i e sBeside the common public area, common green house and a common car pool is put to the housing area. Common car pool is proposed as sustainable strategy of the housing estate, tenants can borrow cars from the housing estate since the usage of cars for elderly is not as frequent. Cars could be picked up and parked in the common parking area while it is possible for cars to go through the whole living area and drop off at every house.

R o o f s c a p eResponding to the existing natural landscape, another level of “landscape” is created by linking of the roofs of the terrace house. Connection of roofs which are in different inclination gives a dynamic lively form and at the same time shows unity to the housing estate. While the different inclinations of the roofs bring an uniqueness to every house.

public space

P r o v o k e o f s o c i a l e x c h a n g eLiveliness is filled to the housing area through the public space. Acomfortable and attractive visiting environment is created forvisitors (eg. family members and volunteers) Some of the facilitiesare open for the public, involvement of local community is thereforeencouraged.

O r g a n i c f o r m a n d f u n c t i o nThe free form of the public space allow smooth flow between differentfunctions. Use of 90 degrees corners is avoided to facilitate themovement for people with wheel chair. Functional boxes areincorporated into the organic shaped spaces to address specificfunctions.

C o n t a c t w i t h t h e N a t u r eA large piece of green landscape is designed as the green roof of thepublic space provide space for outdoor activities. The landscape isaccessible from both the residential area and public road.Transparent dome shaped openings are built as natural lighting for thespace underneath and sitting devices on the landscape

Total area: 1728m2, green roof area 4100m2

. 1 plaza 120m2

the heart of the public space venue for events eg. fun fair, exhibition indoor space for activities

2 restaurant 225m2

3 nursery 150m2

nursery is incorporated to the senior housing to “fill in” energy to the area. Residents could assist in taking care of kids anytime as they want as voluntary service.

4 swimming pool and spa 300m2

. 5 activity hall 124m2

the activity hall provides space for different kinds of activities like gathering, painting, sewing etc. The space could be divided to smaller function rooms, which could be used as meeting rooms, learning room etc.

. 6 reading space 110m2

7 service unit 90m2

including health care, foot care and salon

sub-communities

H o m e - l i k e n e s sI hope residents feel like home not only in their own personal space, but also in the whole estate. In where, senior residents get along with others, like a family. Since the whole site is a huge area, by creating sub-communi-ties within living area could put the population in an optimum size neighbourhood, which allows easy promotion of peace-ful atmosphere. It also enhances the sense of belonging of the living area and close relationship with the neighbours when living in an optimum size of community.

C o m m u n i t yTo create community by physical means, terrace houses (row houses) are put to the area to give a neighbour to all units, a real ‘living next door’. The lines of terrace houses are ‘bent’ to create sense of enclosure for sub-communities. To make the space more useful in daily life, polygon shapes are used instead of curves. The two organic lines of terrace houses in each community are connected with translucent roofs. The translucent roofs provide shelter common areas. It links up all the sub-com-munities and the public space and continues the flow of the ‘roofscape’.Common storage and meeting room are included within each sub-community.

F l e x i b i l i t yTo fulfill different needs, we proposed 5 different types of houses to give the flexibility of choices and future changes from one bigger apartment to a smaller one or vice versa. All the houses are designed which allow usage of wheelchairs.

I n d i v i d u a l i t yThe houses are designed in construction modules which could be prefabricated off site. There is a big variation of the module combinations to form sub-communities. And the individuality is given by the different combination of houses with special roof inclination in sub-communities. The inclination of the roof put the living room and kitchen with a higher room height which could give a more spacious area for meeting. This helps elderly residence to get self-identity.

P r i v a t e a n d P u b l i c w i t h i n t h e h o u s eBedrooms are located near to the private garden to keep the privacy away from the public and connect to nature at the same time.Kitchen and living room are the meeting points within the apartment. They are kept to the entrance side for openness and easy accessibility.

W i n t e r s u n r o o m a n d s u m m e r o p e n d e c kSunlight is very precious in winter time. Glass box sun rooms are inserted to several types of houses to allow enjoyment of sunlight indoor. On the other hand, some of the houses are designed with open-able façade. Sliding folding doors are put to the living room which joined up the living room with the nature. The addition of sun room and subtraction to create open deck brings a dynamic façade of the terrace housing.

It is the biggest size of all the housing units. It could fulfill the need for residents who would have gather-ings frequently. The extra room could be a guest room, a study room or a bedroom for the third person to live in.The winter sun room is inserted into the house. It gives a direct touch of the nature from indoor. Extra sunlight could be introduced to the apartment. The sliding door of the winter sun room could be opened up and free up the living room.
