WELCOME TO THE 2017 DEVIZES EISTEDDFOD Once again it is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Devizes Eisteddfod. 2017 is likely to be the biggest event in our 71 year history with two days of music, speech and drama classes and two days of dance. Following on from the enormous success of our first dance day last year, we will be doubling the size of our dance programme, to be held once again at Lavington School on 18 and 19 November. We have had a careful look at all the classes we offer and hope that what you find on the following pages will be of real interest, be it as a competitor, parent or teacher. Evening classes will again be a feature of our programme across the board which we know is proving popular with our supporters. There will be just one Festival Concert this year, on Saturday, 25 November at 6pm in which we present some of the most memorable items from this year’s Eisteddfod in the music, speech and drama classes. This event will be followed by two further Class Winners’ Concerts in January and February 2018. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsor, Winkworth Devizes, for all their very considerable help with the development of this wonderful event. Thanks must also go to our six corporate members and advertisers for their financial input, Devizes Town Council, who continue to support the Eisteddfod by giving us free use of the Town Hall for the two days of the music, speech & drama classes and finally, the other venues for their kind donation of their spaces, this year, St John’s Church, St Andrew’s Church and for the first time, the beautiful building that is St Mary’s Church, with its wonderful acoustics. Without this local support the event would not be viable and we are enormously grateful for their enthusiasm. We have some outstanding adjudicators coming to Devizes this year, nearly all official adjudicators of the British & International Federation of Festivals, whom I know are much looking forward to hearing and seeing some really first class performances. I look forward to seeing you in November. Michael Johnson Director Closing date for entries: Friday 6 October 2017 (Music, Speech, Drama and pre-adjudicated entries.) Evening classes will again be a feature of our programme across the board which we know is proving popular with our supporters.

We have some outstanding adjudicators coming to Devizes this year, nearly all official adjudicators of the British & International Federation of Festivals, whom I know are much looking forward to hearing and seeing some really first class performances.

I look forward to seeing you in November.

SAFEGUARDING POLICY • The Eisteddfod is run by volunteers with professional input from

adjudicators and accompanists. All personnel are recruited by personal recommendation.

• Each volunteer on duty will wear a badge, and any one of them can be approached at any time in case of a problem; they will attempt to deal with it, or will indicate the responsible person.

• Children are entered into the Eisteddfod by a parent, guardian or teacher who provide their signature and thereby agree to uphold the Eisteddfod’s policy. This policy requires that all children remain the responsibility of their parent, guardian or teacher and should be accompanied at all times by that responsible adult. If the person who has signed the entry form is not personally present the Committee requires them to be satisfied that their child(ren)/pupil(s) will be accompanied and supervised by another responsible adult on their behalf.

• The Eisteddfod is held in numerous venues around a busy town centre and all sessions are open to the public. The responsible adult supervises children moving between the performance venues at all times.

• No photography or recording of any kind is permitted at the Eisteddfod, except by official Eisteddfod photographers (who will wear a badge) or the Press (by arrangement). If any parent or teacher does not wish their child to be photographed then it is their responsibility to ensure they do not take part when photography is happening. This can be done by informing an Eisteddfod volunteer, or the MC at the final concerts.

• All venues are accessible for wheelchair users. • For the Dance classes, there will be separate changing areas for boys and

girls and these will be stewarded by a male and female steward. Children remain the responsibility of their parent/teacher/guardian at all times.

Welcome to this, the 71st year of the Devizes Eisteddfod - which we are hoping will be the most extensive and well attended yet! Winkworth are really pleased to be continuing with our association with this event which is very close to our hearts. Lisa, my wife, has been on the Committee for 12 years this year having said she would do it for a couple of years back in 2004, when our eldest child, then 4 years old, stood up and recited a poem which we had practised endlessly at home. We were both struck by her enormous sense of achievement at having learnt it, conquered her nerves to stand and perform it and

remembered it! She was delighted with herself and couldn’t have cared less whether or not she had won her class - for her - even at that young age - it was her sense of achievement which was so important. It instilled in her a love of performing and she has gone on to do public speaking, singing at charity events and performing on stage - this year at The Edinburgh Fringe - with her school, with a confidence we are sure was born that day at the Devizes Eisteddfod. Although she hasn’t performed at the Eisteddfod for a few years now, we have persuaded her to do so this year before she is too old and we are really looking forward to watching her perform again at this event.

This to us epitomises the spirit of the Eisteddfod. Yes it is about competition and about striving to be the best, but it is so much more than that. It is about self-discipline in practising and preparing, it’s about conquering nerves and putting yourself out of your comfort zone and then realising that you are actually braver than you think and capable of anything if you put your mind to it. It’s about the rewards when you come off stage having given a good performance. It’s about picking yourself up and carrying on if it doesn’t go to plan and realising that there will always be another chance and that’s ok. An event like this teaches children so much about themselves and builds a resilience which will become a vital tool in the obstacle course that is life.

So we will continue to support this fabulous and important event for as long as they’ll have us. It is important for our local children and it’s important also for the town of Devizes, adding to its already diverse cultural calendar. Please encourage your friends and family to come and watch some of the extraordinary performances which will be happening over the event weekend in some of our most lovely churches and venues, and we much look forward to welcoming you and your children in November.

In memory of Michael Oliver, our Honorary President, who died in

December 2016

Michael was the Director of Devizes Junior Eisteddfod for 25 years and continued to adjudicate and steward for many years

after that. His support, advice and help were always much appreciated by the Committee and we were very saddened by his death. We would like to dedicate this year’s event to his

memory.

invitation to the pre-concert drinks reception held at the Town Hall and to the evening Festival Concert. Friends’ names will also be acknowledged on the website and in the Eisteddfod Programme.

If you would like to become a Friend, please contact:

Alice Cleland - [email protected]

RULES FOR MUSIC CLASSES Entrants are not permitted to communicate with the Adjudicator at any time. GUIDANCE NOTE: In those classes where a standard rather than an age is indicated, competitors are expected to enter the class appropriate to their current performance standard, regardless of their age. Where a grade is stipulated this is for guidance of standard and appropriateness of the music choice only and not a requirement of entry. Own choice pieces do not have to be from an examination list except in the Piano Solo Classes where pieces must be chosen from the 2017 Syllabus. ACCOMPANIMENT: No CD accompaniment is permitted in the music classes except Musical Theatre. An Official Accompanist is available on request via the Entry Form at a fee of £3.50 per entry. COPYRIGHT: The use of photo or other facsimile copies of printed music without the publisher's permission is forbidden as it is against the law. A copy may be made for the Adjudicator, provided the competitor has already purchased an original copy. The photocopy will be retained and then destroyed by the Eisteddfod Committee. No arrangement of music still under copyright is permitted, unless with written consent from the publisher. PERFORMANCE: It is required that entrants announce their chosen piece before their performance. This is courteous and adds to the interest and enjoyment of the audience. A copy of the music performed must be provided for the Adjudicator on the day. If using an Official Accompanist a copy of the work must be provided at the time of entry – failure to do so will result in a delay in processing your entry – an accompanist will not be allocated until a copy is received. Please note that introductions and tuning are included in the time limit. The time limits stated are maximum limits not minimum. The Eisteddfod committee reserves the right to restrict the number of entries in any class or subdivide a large-entry class, in order to facilitate timetabling on the day or to merge very small classes where appropriate. Failure to comply with the Music Rules may result in your performance being adjudicated but not placed.

PIANO SOLO CLASSES The ANN LAKE CUP will be awarded for the most outstanding performance in classes P2-P11. DE CUP - Most promising Junior Piano Solo performance in classes P2–P7 DE CUP - Most promising Senior Piano Solo performance in classes P8-P11 DE CUP - Most promising Piano Recital performance in Class P12 DE CUP - Most promising Piano Repertoire performance in classes P13-17 DE CUP - Most promising All That Jazz performance in classes P18-P19

Class P1 Beginners’ Piano Solo Entry £5.50 A non-competitive class aimed at providing early performing experience for all players pre-Grade 1 standard. The session will begin with a group approach to introduce the entrants to aspects of the performing experience. All players will then have the opportunity to perform their chosen piece to the audience and for this they will receive a written appraisal from the Adjudicator. Remember to bring a copy of your chosen piece for the Adjudicator. All entrants will receive a certificate.
