earlier times with a variety of “musical instruments” fashioned from washboards, bike horns, funnels, and other kitchen utensils. Thegroup, active for many years, was reportedly accomplished enough to be featured entertainers at nearby MH parks, senior centersand other local venues—predating STOMP by decades!

Code RED Emergency Notification SystemThe City of Hayward Fire Department has contracted

with Emergency Communications Network to license itsCodeRED high-speed notification solution. The CodeREDsystem provides public safety officials the ability to quicklydeliver messages to targeted areas or the entire city.

Garrett Contreras, Fire Chief of the Hayward Fire De-partment, cautioned that such systems are only as goodas the telephone number database supporting them. “Ifyour phone number is not in the database, you will notbe called.” One of the reasons the CodeRED system wasselected is it gives individuals and businesses the ability toadd their own phone numbers directly into the system’s da-tabase; this is an extremely important feature.

“Nobody should automatically assume his or her phonenumber is included,” Contreras said, urging all individu-als and businesses to log onto the City of Hayward(COH)website, www.hayward-ca.gov, and follow the link to the“CodeRED Community Notification Enrollment” icon prom-inently displayed on the main page.

All businesses, as well as all individuals who have unlist-ed phone numbers, those who have changed their phone

number or address within the past year, and those who usea cellular phone or VoIP phone as their primary number areencouraged to register.

Registering is quick and easy requiring only first andlast name, street address (physical address, no P.O. box-es), city, state, zip code, and primary and cell phone num-bers. Those without Internet access may call the disasterpreparedness hotline at 510-583-4948 and supply their infor-mation over the phone.

Contreras explained, “CodeRED allows for geographi-cally based delivery, which means street addresses are re-quired to ensure emergency notification calls are receivedby the appropriate individuals, in a given situation. The sys-tem also works for cell phones, but we need to have anassociated street address to provide relevant messages.”

Contreras stated, “CodeRED gives those who want tobe included an easy and secure method for inputting in-formation. The data collected is for our use only and willonly be used for emergency notification purposes and willnot be shared.” Questions should be directed to the PublicInformation Officer at 510-583-4948

Minutes of the

Spanish Ranch 1 Association Meeting — June 5, 2014 Meetings of the elected Spanish Ranch I Executive Board are held as announced at 7:00 p.m.

in the main clubhouse. ALL residents are welcome to attend!

Meeting called to order at 7:30 p.m by PresidentPat. Also present were Jeanie, Dawn, Barbara,

Brenda and Patty L. as well as several residents.

Minutes: The minutes of the abbreviated Maymeeting were approved.

Treasurer’s Report:  No report from Peggy, absentbecause of the illness of her father, but Jeanie gavea breakdown of pool party expenses covered withdonations from NERT and Bingo. Treasurer will beasked to submit the budget for this fiscal year.

OLD BUSINESS

Pool party: Unusually large attendance resultedin running out of food earlier than planned, thoughit was gratifying to have such a good turnout.Consensus was that with more families moving intothe park and the increase in the number of children, that we overbuy for the next event (National NightOut) so as to not run out of food during the postedhours, while keeping in mind that unused, unopenedpackages can be returned to the store.

Insurance:  The insurance coverage that theAssociation and NERT shared with Bingo in the pastwas discussed. So far Bingo has not agreed to pay ashare of the cost now but only if the activity resumes, and park management had not responded to aninquiry as to what extent the park’s insurance coversassociation activities. The fact that the association

is incorporated offers some protection for individ-uals, but no one was comfortable with having nocoverage at all. The body unanimously approved amotion to renew the general liability policy, at a costto be determined between $750 and $1,000 with theunderstanding that NERT will pay a quarter of what-ever the amount ends up to be.

NEW BUSINESS

Revisions to By-Laws. The revisions to the SpanishRanch 1 Association By-Laws as published, essen-tially removing term limits and mandated meetingsin favor of a flexible schedule, were unanimouslyapproved.

Flea Market: Date set as Saturday, August 9. Fouroutside tables can be accommodated. Patty Lreported that 17 people have already spoken fortables.

Tree problem: A resident reported a problem witha park tree infested with Scale, an insect evidencedby sticky residue that covers the tree and surround-ing area, possibly attracting other wood boring

insects that could damage a roof, porch or deck. Bythe date of the meeting, the tree had already beencut down, having been deemed unsaveable by thepark’s landscaping contractors.

Resident understanding is that the tree must bereplaced but this had not yet been done. Pat willfind out from the City arborist what the city policy ison replacing trees. Another resident reported beingunable to get a satisfactory response from parkmanagement about a tree on her property. Dawnwill research who is responsible for which trees andtry to nail down which are “park” trees which are theresponsibility of owners per MH Residency Law (MRL).

Meetings: The next board meeting is scheduled forAugust 7.

Meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.

  Respectfully submitted,  Jeanie Schultz, Secretary
