El Shaddai

Almighty, most powerful.

In Genesis 17 we see the name of God, El Shaddai for the first time.

God gave Abram a condition and a promise. God called him to leave his country (Ur) and go to a land which He would show him. This took a "leap of faith" to obey. Faith is always based on truth and Abram responded yes he would go because he believed the truth of God's promise.

Ge 12:3 I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families (Jew and Gentile) of the earth shall be blessed. Genesis 15-God promised Abram an heir. Gen 15:5 (God) took him outside and said, "Now look toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them." And He said to him, "So shall your descendants be."

Gen 15:6 Then he believed in the LORD; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness.

God Almighty or "God All Sufficient."

48 times in the OT, 31 times in Job. First used in Gen. 17:1, 2. (Gen. 31:29, 49:24, 25; Prov. 3:27; Micah 2:1; Isa. 60:15, 16, 66:10-13; Ruth 1:20, 21) In Rev. 16:7, means "Lord God-- the Almighty."

The Greek meaning "all-sufficient" or "self-sufficient.“

Abram proceeds to suggest that Eliezer would be the heir but immediately God confirms that the heir will be his own seed...And He took him outside and said, "Now look toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them." And He said to him, "So shall your descendants be" Then he believed in the LORD; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness.

On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, "To your descendants I have given this land...“

...because He is El Shaddai, God Almighty. (Gen 15:18)

Remember that one way to get to know God better is to pay attention to His names. However, it is one thing to know God’s name and quite something else to trust that name and allow God to work in the difficult situations of life.

Page 14: El shaddai

El Shaddai = God Almighty The ever-present God who protects & provides. The God who nourishes and provides, who sustains and enables. “The God of the mountain” (strength, stability) or “God my destroyer” (power against the enemy).

God was going to tell His friend, Abraham that Sarah would have a son.

The Lord wanted Abraham to know that He is the God who is all-sufficient and all-powerful, and that nothing is too hard for Him.

Page 16: El shaddai

After Abraham’s battle with the four kings, God came to him as a warrior and told him He was his “shield.”

When Abraham wondered about his refusal of Sodom’s wealth, God told him He was his “exceedingly great reward” (Ge 15:1).

Now when Abraham and Sarah were “as good as dead,” God assured them that He was more than sufficient to bring about the miracle birth. God comes to us in the ways we need Him most.

If you want to know what great things the Lord can do as the Lord God Almighty, be separate from the world and in tune with God.

Page 18: El shaddai

"El-Shaddai," God all-sufficient, the God who nurtures and provides. We will never know the utmost power of God for supplying all our needs until we have cut connection once for all with everything that is not according to His mind.

It was grand of Abraham when he said to the king of Sodom, "I will not take from you"—a Babylonian garment or a wedge of gold? No, no. He said, "I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet” (Ge 14:23). That was a clear-cut separation. The man of God will have nothing to do with Sodom or with false doctrine. If you see anything that is evil, cut yourself off from it. Be done with those who are done with truth. Then you will be prepared to receive the promise, and not until then. (Spurgeon)

We can’t be half for God and half for ourselves.

God says we can’t have two Masters.

Page 20: El shaddai

As we pray, we are talking with Him Who said to Abraham, "I am El Shaddai; the Almighty God.”

We are talking with the same God who said to Jeremiah, "I am the Lord, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?"

Page 21: El shaddai

We are talking to the same God who said to Isaiah, "Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding."

I wonder what the safest place in the world is. A bomb shelter? A bank vault? Perhaps a prison surrounded by an army?

According to Psalm 91, the safest place in the world is a shadow. "He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty“

Page 23: El shaddai

El Shaddai - Who Alone can empower us to walk worthy of the calling to which we have been called. We cannot live this supernatural life in our strength, but God can live it in and through us as we learn to rely on Him as our El Shaddai

Safety of Abiding in the Presence of GodPSALM 91

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High

Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress;

My God, in Him I will trust.”
