1. CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS DESCRIBE THE PRODUCTS, SYSTEMS, QUANTITIES, CONFIGURATION AND PERFORMANCE SPECIFICATIONS THAT DELIVER THE OVERALL DESIGN INTENT OF THE PROJECT.
2. THE CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENT DRAWINGS AND SPECIFICATIONS ARE COMPLIMENTARY, AND WHAT IS REQUIRED BY ONE SHALL BE AS BINDING AS IF REQUIRED BY BOTH.
3. PERFORMANCE BY THE CONSTRUCTION TEAM SHALL BE CONSISTENT WITH THE CONSTRUCTION DRAWINGS AND SPECIFICATIONS AS NECESSARY TO DELIVER THE INDICATED RESULTS OF THE DESIGN INTENT.
4. ALL MATERIALS AND WORKMANSHIP SHALL COMPLY WITH ALL GOVERNING CODES, ORDINANCES, REGULATIONS AND LAWS.
5. THE DESIGN ADEQUACY AND SAFETY OF ERECTION BRACING, SHORING, TEMPORARY SUPPORTS AND SCAFFOLDING IS THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CONTRACTOR.
6. WHERE ANY CONFLICT OCCURS BETWEEN THE REQUIREMENTS OF LAWS, CODES, ORDINANCES, RULES AND REGULATIONS, THE MOST STRINGENT SHALL GOVERN.
7. ENACT ALL MEASURES TO PROTECT AND SAFEGUARD ALL EXISTING ELEMENTS TO REMAIN FROM BEING DAMAGED. REPLACE OR REPAIR EXISTING ELEMENTS DAMAGED BY THE EXECUTION OF THIS CONTRACT TO EQUAL OR BETTER CONDITION.
8. CUTTING, BORING, SAWCUTTING OR DRILLING THROUGH THE EXISTING OR NEW STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS SHALL NOT BE STARTED UNTIL THE DETAILS HAVE BEEN REVIEWED AND APPROVED BY THE ARCHITECT, AND STRUCTURAL ENGINEER OF RECORD.
9. VERIFY DIMENSIONS AND EXISTING CONDITIONS BEFORE COMMENCING WORK. REPORT DISCREPANCIES TO THE ARCHITECT PRIOR TO PROCEEDING WITH AFFECTED WORK.
10. DIMENSIONS NOTED AS "FIELD VERIFY" SHALL BE CHECKED AT THE SITE BY THE CONTRACTOR AND REVIEWED WITH THE ARCHITECT BEFORE INCORPORATING INTO THE WORK.
11. DO NOT SCALE DRAWING. WRITTEN DIMENSIONS TAKE PRECEDENCE. IF CLARIFICATION IS REQUIRED IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE INTENT OF THE CONTRACT DOCUMENTS, CONTACT THE ARCHITECT.

1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCEA. Maintain one copy of each installation standard on site throughout the duration of concrete work.
1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLINGA. Deliver void forms and installation instructions in manufacturer's packaging.B. Store void forms off ground in ventilated and protected manner to prevent deterioration from moisture.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 FORMWORK - GENERALA. Provide concrete forms, accessories, shoring, and bracing as required to accomplish castin-place concrete
work.B. Design and construct to provide resultant concrete that conforms to design with respect to shape, lines, and
dimensions.C. Comply with applicable State and local codes with respect to design, fabrication, erection, and removal of
formwork.D. Comply with relevant portions of ACI 347, ACI 301, and ACI 318.
2.2 WOOD FORM MATERIALSA. Form Materials: At the discretion of the Contractor, with Architect's approval.
2.3 PREFABRICATED FORMSA. Tubular Column Type: Round, spirally wound laminated fiber material, surface treated with release agent, non-
reusable, of sizes indicated.
2.4 FORMWORK ACCESSORIESA. Form Ties: Removable type, galvanized metal, fixed length, cone type, with waterproofing washer, 1/2 inch
back break dimension, free of defects that could leave holes larger than 1 inch in concrete surface.B. Form Release Agent: Colorless mineral oil that will not stain concrete.C. Corners: Filleted, rigid plastic type; 3/4 x 3/4 inch size; maximum possible lengths.D. Dovetail Anchor Slot: Galvanized steel, 22 gage thick, foam filled, release tape sealed slots, anchors for
securing to concrete formwork.E. Flashing Reglets: Galvanized steel, 22 gage thick, longest possible lengths, with alignment splines for joints,
foam filled, release tape sealed slots, anchors for securing to concrete formwork.F. Nails, Spikes, Lag Bolts, Through Bolts, Anchorages: Sized as required, of sufficient strength and character to
maintain formwork in place while placing concrete.G. Waterstops: Rubber, minimum 1,750 psi tensile strength, minimum 50 degrees F to plus 175 degrees F

PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATIONA. Verify lines, levels and centers before proceeding with formwork. Ensure that dimensions agree with drawings.
3.2 EARTH FORMSA. Hand trim sides and bottom of earth forms. Remove loose soil prior to placing concrete.
3.3 ERECTION - FORMWORKA. Erect formwork, shoring and bracing to achieve design requirements, in accordance with requirements of ACI
301.B. Provide bracing to ensure stability of formwork. Shore or strengthen formwork subject to overstressing by
construction loads.C. Arrange and assemble formwork to permit dismantling and stripping. Do not damage concrete during stripping.
Permit removal of remaining principal shores.D. Align joints and make watertight. Keep form joints to a minimum.E. Obtain approval before framing openings in structural members that are not indicated on drawings.F. Provide fillet strips on external corners of beams, joists, and columns.G. Install void forms in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations. Protect forms from moisture or
crushing.H. Coordinate this section with other sections of work that require attachment of components to formwork.I. If formwork is placed after reinforcement, resulting in insufficient concrete cover over reinforcement, request
instructions from Architect before proceeding.
3.4 APPLICATION - FORM RELEASE AGENTA. Apply form release agent on formwork in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.B. Apply prior to placement of reinforcing steel, anchoring devices, and embedded items.C. Do not apply form release agent where concrete surfaces will receive special finishes or applied coverings that
are affected by agent. Soak inside surfaces of untreated forms with clean water. Keep surfaces coated prior to placement of concrete.
3.5 INSERTS, EMBEDDED PARTS, AND OPENINGSA. Provide formed openings where required for items to be embedded in passing through concrete work.B. Locate and set in place items that will be cast directly into concrete.C. Coordinate with work of other sections in forming and placing openings, slots, reglets, recesses, sleeves,
bolts, anchors, other inserts, and components of other work.D. Install accessories in accordance with manufacturer's instructions, so they are straight, level, and plumb.
Ensure items are not disturbed during concrete placement.E. Install waterstops in accordance with manufacturer's instructions, so they are continuous without displacing
reinforcement. Heat seal joints so they are watertight.F. Provide temporary ports or openings in formwork where required to facilitate cleaning and inspection. Locate
openings at bottom of forms to allow flushing water to drain.G. Close temporary openings with tight fitting panels, flush with inside face of forms, and neatly fitted so joints will
not be apparent in exposed concrete surfaces.
3.6 FORM CLEANINGA. Clean forms as erection proceeds, to remove foreign matter within forms.B. Clean formed cavities of debris prior to placing concrete.
1. Flush with water or use compressed air to remove remaining foreign matter. Ensure that water and debris drain to exterior through clean-out ports.
2. During cold weather, remove ice and snow from within forms. Do not use de-icing salts. Do not use water to clean out forms, unless formwork and concrete construction proceed within heated enclosure. Use compressed air or other means to remove foreign matter.
3.7 FORMWORK TOLERANCESA. Construct formwork to maintain tolerances required by ACI 117.B. Construct and align formwork for elevator hoistway in accordance with ASME A17.1.C. Camber slabs and beams 1/4 inch per 10 feet.
3.8 FIELD QUALITY CONTROLA. An independent testing agency will perform field quality control tests.B. Inspect erected formwork, shoring, and bracing to ensure that work is in accordance with formwork design,
and to verify that supports, fastenings, wedges, ties, and items are secure.C. Do not patch formwork.
3.9 FORM REMOVALA. Do not remove forms or bracing until concrete has gained sufficient strength to carry its own weight and
imposed loads.B. Loosen forms carefully. Do not wedge pry bars, hammers, or tools against finish concrete surfaces scheduled
for exposure to view.C. Store removed forms to prevent damage to form materials or to fresh concrete. Discard damaged form.

SECTION 03 20 00 - CONCRETE REINFORCEMENT
PART 1 - GENERAL

PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.01 BARSA. Bars shall be deformed billet steel conforming to ASTM A 615, Grade 40 for #4 bars and smaller, Grade 60 for
#5 bars and larger. Mixing of steel grades will not be allowed.
2.02 BAR SUPPORTSA. Bar support shall be concrete or metal chairs, spacers or hangers. Reinforcing bars shall not be supported by
forms.
2.03 TIE WIREA. Tie wire shall be annealed steel wire of not less than 16-gauge.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01 PLACEMENTA. Position reinforcement in accordance with the drawings, secure with wire ties or suitable clips at all
intersections, and support by an adequate number of concrete or metal chairs, spacers, or metal hangers such that reinforcing bars do not sag more than one quarter of an inch (1/4”) between supports. Do not place reinforcement or supports in contact with the forms. Bend tie wires away from the forms in order to provide the specified concrete coverage. To secure reinforcement in position, the Contractor may elect to locate bars additional to those shown on the drawings, but at no additional cost to the Owner.
B. Set reinforcing dowels and anchor bolts in place prior to placing concrete. Do not press them into the concrete after the concrete has been placed.
3.02 SPLICESA. Splice bars only at locations shown on the drawings.
3.03 CLEANINGA. Remove dirt, form oil, excessive rust, cement coating from previous pours, and foreign matter that will reduce
bond with concrete.
3.04 PROTECTION DURING CONCRETINGA. Keep reinforcing steel in proper position during concrete placement.

2.12 CONCRETE MIXINGA. Ready-Mixed Concrete: Measure, batch, mix, and deliver concrete according to ASTM C 94/C 94M, and
furnish batch ticket information.1. When air temperature is between 85 and 90 deg F, reduce mixing and delivery time from 1-1/2 hours to
75 minutes; when air temperature is above 90 deg F, reduce mixing and delivery time to 60 minutes.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01 FORMWORKA. Design, erect, shore, brace, and maintain formwork, according to ACI 301, to support vertical, lateral, static,
and dynamic loads, and construction loads that might be applied, until structure can support such loads.B. Construct formwork so concrete members and structures are of size, shape, alignment, elevation, and position
indicated, within tolerance limits of ACI 117C. Construct forms tight enough to prevent loss of concrete mortar.D. Retighten forms and bracing before placing concrete, as required, to prevent mortar leaks and maintain proper
alignment.E. Coat contact surfaces of forms with form-release agent, according to manufacturer's written instructions,
before placing reinforcement.
3.02 EMBEDDED ITEMSA. Place and secure anchorage devices and other embedded items required for adjoining work that is attached to
or supported by cast-in-place concrete. Use setting drawings, templates, diagrams, instructions, and directions furnished with items to be embedded. In no case shall any bolt or anchor be stabbed in place while or after the concrete is poured.1. Install anchor rods, accurately located, to elevations required and complying with tolerances in Section 7.5
of AISC's "Code of Standard Practice for Steel Buildings and Bridges."
3.03 REMOVING AND REUSING FORMSA. General: Formwork for sides of beams, walls, columns, and similar parts of the Work that does not support
weight of concrete may be removed after cumulatively curing at not less than 50 deg F for 24 hours after placing concrete. Concrete has to be hard enough to not be damaged by form-removal operations and curing and protection operations need to be maintained.1. Leave formwork for beam soffits, joists, slabs, and other structural elements that supports weight of
concrete in place until concrete has achieved at least 70 percent of its 28-day design compressive strength.
2. Do not strip vertical concrete in less than 7 days.3. Remove forms only if shores have been arranged to permit removal of forms without loosening or
disturbing shores.B. Clean and repair surfaces of forms to be reused in the Work. Split, frayed, delaminated or otherwise damaged
form-facing material will not be acceptable for exposed surfaces. Apply new form-release agent.C. When forms are reused, clean surfaces, remove fins and laitance, and tighten to close joints. Align and secure
joints to avoid offsets. Do not use patched forms for exposed concrete surfaces unless approved by Architect.
3.04 SHORES AND RESHORESA. Comply with ACI 318 and ACI 301 for design, installation, and removal of shoring and reshoring.
1. Do not remove shoring or reshoring until measurement of slab tolerances is complete.B. Plan sequence of removal of shores and reshore to avoid damage to concrete. Locate and provide adequate
reshoring to support construction without excessive stress or deflection.
3.05 VAPOR RETARDERSA. Sheet Vapor Retarders: Place, protect, and repair sheet vapor retarder according to ASTM E 1643 and
manufacturer's written instructions.1. Lap joints 6 inches and seal with manufacturer's recommended tape.2. Seal all penetrations (including pipes) per manufacturer’s tape.3. No penetration of the vapor barrier is allowed except for reinforcing and permanent utilities.4. Repair damaged areas by cutting patches of vapor barrier, overlapping damaged area 6 inches and taping
all four sides with tape.5. Do not saturate the sand cushion.6. If sand is saturated prior to placement of concrete, remove the sand and replace.7. Protect all installed moisture barrier construction from precipitation and water penetration by covering and
providing positive drainage away from the moisture barrier.8. Cover slab openings and block-outs around columns to prevent water penetration of moisture barrier.
3.06 STEEL REINFORCEMENTA. General: Comply with CRSI's "Manual of Standard Practice" for placing reinforcement.
1. Do not cut or puncture vapor retarder. Repair damage and reseal vapor retarder before placing concrete.2. Clean reinforcement and remove loose dust and mill scale, earth, oil, and other materials which reduce
bond or destroy bond with concrete.3. Position, support, and secure reinforcement against displacement by forms, construction, and the
concrete placement operations. Provide metal chairs, dobies, or other aids manufactured for this purpose.4. Place reinforcement to obtain the required concrete coverages for concrete protection.
3.07 JOINTSA. General: Construct joints true to line with faces perpendicular to surface plane of concrete.B. Construction Joints: Install so strength and appearance of concrete are not impaired, at locations indicated or
as approved by Architect.C. Contraction Joints in Slabs-on-Grade: Form weakened-plane contraction joints, sectioning concrete into areas
as indicated. Construct contraction joints for a depth equal to at least one-inch as follows:1. Grooved Joints: Form contraction joints after initial floating by grooving and finishing each edge of joint to
a radius of 1/8 inch. Repeat grooving of contraction joints after applying surface finishes. Eliminate groover tool marks on concrete surfaces.
2. Sawed Joints: Form contraction joints with power saws equipped with shatterproof abrasive or diamond-rimmed blades. Cut 1/8-inch wide joints into concrete when cutting action will not tear, abrade, or otherwise damage surface and before concrete develops random contraction cracks. Saw cut slab as soon as surface has hardened to where it can support the equipment and operator, normally within 2 hours after finishing. Use saw which is specially designed for cutting fresh concrete, such as “Soff-Cut” or equal.a. Depth of cut: 1/3 depth of slab, 1 inch min.
D. Doweled Joints: Install dowel bars and support assemblies at joints where indicated. Lubricate one-half of dowel length to prevent concrete bonding to one side of joint.
3.08 CONCRETE PLACEMENTA. Before placing concrete, verify that installation of formwork, reinforcement, and embedded items is complete
and that required inspections have been performed.B. Do not add water to concrete during delivery, at Project site, or during placement unless approved by
Architect.C. Deposit concrete continuously in one layer or in horizontal layers of such thickness that no new concrete will
be placed on concrete that has hardened enough to cause seams or planes of weakness. If a section cannot be placed continuously, provide construction joints as indicated. Deposit concrete to avoid segregation.1. Deposit concrete in horizontal layers of depth to not exceed formwork design pressures and in a manner
to avoid inclined construction joints.2. Consolidate placed concrete with mechanical vibrating equipment according to ACI 301.3. Do not use vibrators to transport concrete inside forms. Insert and withdraw vibrators vertically at
uniformly spaced locations to rapidly penetrate placed layer and at least 6 inches into preceding layer. Do not insert vibrators into lower layers of concrete that have begun to lose plasticity. At each insertion, limit duration of vibration to time necessary to consolidate concrete and complete embedment of reinforcement and other embedded items without causing mixture constituents to segregate.
D. Deposit and consolidate concrete for floors and slabs in a continuous operation, within limits of construction joints, until placement of a panel or section is complete.1. Consolidate concrete during placement operations so concrete is thoroughly worked around reinforcement
and other embedded items and into corners.2. Maintain reinforcement in position on chairs during concrete placement.3. Screed slab surfaces with a straightedge and strike off to correct elevations.4. Slope surfaces uniformly to drains where required.5. Begin initial floating using bull floats or darbies to form a uniform and open-textured surface plane, before
excess bleedwater appears on the surface. Do not further disturb slab surfaces before starting finishing operations.
E. Cold-Weather Placement: Comply with ACI 306.1 and as follows. Protect concrete work from physical damage or reduced strength that could be caused by frost, freezing actions, or low temperatures.1. When average high and low temperature is expected to fall below 40 deg F for three successive days,
maintain delivered concrete mixture temperature within the temperature range required by ACI 301.2. Do not use frozen materials or materials containing ice or snow. Do not place concrete on frozen
subgrade or on subgrade containing frozen materials.3. Do not use calcium chloride, salt, or other materials containing antifreeze agents or chemical accelerators
unless otherwise specified and approved in mixture designs.F. Hot-Weather Placement: Comply with ACI 301 and as follows:
1. Maintain concrete temperature below 90 deg F at time of placement. Chilled mixing water or chopped ice may be used to control temperature, provided water equivalent of ice is calculated to total amount of mixing water. Using liquid nitrogen to cool concrete is Contractor's option.
2. Fog-spray forms, steel reinforcement, and subgrade just before placing concrete. Keep subgrade uniformly moist without standing water, soft spots, or dry areas.
3.09 FINISHING FORMED SURFACESA. Rough-Formed Finish: As-cast concrete texture imparted by form-facing material with tie holes and defects
repaired and patched. Remove fins and other projections that exceed specified limits on formed-surface irregularities.1. Apply to concrete surfaces not exposed to public view.
B. Smooth-Formed Finish: As-cast concrete texture imparted by form-facing material, arranged in an orderly and symmetrical manner with a minimum of seams. Repair and patch tie holes and defects. Remove fins and other projections that exceed specified limits on formed-surface irregularities.1. Apply to concrete surfaces exposed to public view, to receive a rubbed finish, to be covered with a coating
or covering material applied directly to concrete.C. Rubbed Finish: Apply the following to smooth-formed finished as-cast concrete.
1. Smooth-Rubbed Finish: Not later than one day after form removal, moisten concrete surfaces and rub with carborundum brick or another abrasive until producing a uniform color and texture. Do not apply cement grout other than that created by the rubbing process.
D. Related Unformed Surfaces: At tops of walls, horizontal offsets, and similar unformed surfaces adjacent to formed surfaces, strike off smooth and finish with a texture matching adjacent formed surfaces. Continue final surface treatment of formed surfaces uniformly across adjacent unformed surfaces unless otherwise indicated.
3.10 FINISHING FLOORS AND SLABSA. General: Comply with ACI 302.1R recommendations for screeding, restraightening, and finishing operations
for concrete surfaces. Except as may be shown otherwise on the drawings, provide the following finishes at the indicated locations.
B. Scratch Finish: While still plastic, texture concrete surface that has been screeded and bullfloated or darbied. Use stiff brushes, brooms, or rakes to produce a profile amplitude of 1/4 inch in one direction.1. Apply scratch finish to surfaces that are to receive concrete floor toppings or mortar setting beds for
bonded cementitious floor finishes.C. Float Finish: Consolidate surface with power-driven floats or by hand floating if area is small or inaccessible to
power driven floats. Restraighten, cut down high spots, and fill low spots. Repeat float passes and restraightening until surface is left with a uniform, smooth, granular texture.1. Apply float finish to surfaces to receive trowel finish and to be covered with fluidapplied or sheet
waterproofing, built-up or membrane roofing, or sand-bed terrazzo.D. Trowel Finish: After applying float finish, apply first troweling and consolidate concrete by hand or power-
driven trowel. Continue troweling passes and restraighten until surface is free of trowel marks and uniform in texture and appearance. Grind smooth any surface defects that would telegraph through applied coatings or floor coverings.1. Apply a trowel finish to surfaces exposed to view or to be covered with resilient flooring, carpet, ceramic or
quarry tile set over a cleavage membrane, paint, or another thin-film-finish coating system.2. Finish and measure surface so gap at any point between concrete surface and an unleveled,
freestanding, 10-ft. long straightedge resting on two high spots and placed anywhere on the surface does not exceed 1/8 inch.
3. The contractor shall anticipate that grinding will be required as a result of curling or other slab defects. Grinding required to bring the slab surface into acceptable tolerances for finished flooring installation shall be included as part of the Work.
E. Trowel and Fine-Broom Finish: Apply a first trowel finish to surfaces where ceramic or quarry tile is to be installed by either thickset or thin-set method. While concrete is still plastic, slightly scarify surface with a fine broom.1. Comply with flatness and levelness tolerances for trowel-finished floor surfaces.
F. Broom Finish: Apply a broom finish to exterior concrete platforms, steps, ramps, and elsewhere as indicated.
3.11 CONCRETE PROTECTING AND CURINGA. General: Protect freshly placed concrete from premature drying and excessive cold or hot temperatures.
Comply with ACI 306.1 for cold-weather protection and ACI 301 for hotweather protection during curing.B. Vertical and decorative concrete shall be sacked and patched and receive an anti-graffiti coating.C. Finishes: Medium broom finish or top-cast etching at horizontal concrete.D. Evaporation Retarder: Apply evaporation retarder to unformed concrete surfaces if hot, dry, or windy
conditions cause moisture loss approaching 0.2 lb/sq. ft. x h before and during finishing operations. Apply according to manufacturer's written instructions after placing, screeding, and bull floating or darbying concrete, but before float finishing.
E. Cure concrete according to ACI 308.1, by one or a combination of the following methods:1. Moisture Curing: Keep surfaces continuously moist for not less than seven days.2. Moisture-Retaining-Cover Curing: Cover concrete surfaces with moisture-retaining cover for curing
concrete, placed in widest practicable width, with sides and ends lapped at least 12 inches, and sealed by waterproof tape or adhesive. Cure for not less than seven days. Immediately repair any holes or tears during curing period using cover material and waterproof tape.
3. Curing Compound: Apply uniformly in continuous operation by power spray or roller according to manufacturer's written instructions. Recoat areas subjected to heavy rainfall within three hours after initial application. Maintain continuity of coating and repair damage during curing period.a. Removal: After curing period has elapsed, remove curing compoamaging concrete surfaces by
method recommended by curing compound manufacturer unless manufacturer certifies curing compound will not interfere with bonding of floor covering used on Project.
4. Curing and Sealing Compound: Apply uniformly to floors and slabs indicated in a continuous operation by power spray or roller according to manufacturer's written instructions. Recoat areas subjected to heavy rainfall within three hours after initial application. Repeat process 24 hours later and apply a second coat. Maintain continuity of coating and repair damage during curing period.
3.12 CONCRETE SURFACE REPAIRSA. Defective Concrete: Repair and patch defective areas when approved by Architect. Remove and replace
concrete that cannot be repaired and patched to Architect's approval.
3.13 FIELD QUALITY CONTROLA. Testing and Inspecting: Owner will engage a qualified testing and inspecting agency to perform field tests and
inspections and prepare test reports.

concrete mixture placed each day, but not less than once for each 2000 square feet of surface area for slabs or wallsa. When frequency of testing will provide fewer than five compressivestrength tests for each concrete
mixture, testing shall be conducted from at least five randomly selected batches or from each batch if fewer than five are used.
3. Slump: ASTM C 143/C 143M; one test at point of placement for each composite sample, but not less than one test for each day's pour of each concrete mixture. Perform additional tests when concrete consistency appears to change.
4. Air Content: ASTM C 231, pressure method, for normal-weight concrete; one test for each composite sample, but not less than one test for each day's pour of each concrete mixture.
5. Concrete Temperature: ASTM C 1064/C 1064M; one test hourly when air temperature is 40 deg F and below and when 80 deg F and above, and one test for each composite sample.
6. Unit Weight: ASTM C 567, fresh unit weight of structural lightweight concrete; one test for each composite sample, but not less than one test for each day's pour of each concrete mixture.
7. Compression Test Specimens: ASTM C 31/C 31M.a. Cast and laboratory cure two sets of two standard cylinder specimens for each composite sample.b. Cast and field cure two sets of two standard cylinder specimens for each composite sample.
8. Compressive-Strength Tests: ASTM C 39/C 39M; test one set of two laboratorycured specimens at 7 days and one set of two specimens at 28 days.a. 11. Test results shall be reported in writing to Architect, concrete manufacturer, and Contractor within 48 hours of testing. Reports of compressive-strength tests shall contain Project identification name and number, date of concrete placement, name of concrete testing and inspecting agency, location of concrete batch in Work, design compressive strength at 28 days, concrete mixture proportions and materials, compressive breaking strength, and type of break for both 7- and 28day tests.
12. Nondestructive Testing: Impact hammer, sonoscope, or other nondestructive device may be permitted by Architect but will not be used as sole basis for approval or rejection of concrete.
13. Additional Tests: Testing and inspecting agency shall make additional tests of concrete when test results indicate that slump, air entrainment, compressive strengths, or other requirements have not been met, as directed by Architect. P. Preconstruction Test Reports: Submit reports written by a qualified testing agency, on testing agency's standard form, indicating and interpreting results of tests performed before installation of product, for compliance with performance requirements in the Contract Documents.
Q. Compatibility Test Reports: Submit reports written by a qualified testing agency, on testing agency's standard form, indicating and interpreting results of compatibility tests performed before installation of product. Include written recommendations for primers and substrate preparation needed for adhesion.
R. Field Test Reports: Submit written reports indicating and interpreting results of field tests performed either during installation of product or after product is installed in its final location, for compliance with requirements in the Contract Documents.
S. Design Data: Prepare and submit written and graphic information, including, but not limited to, performance and design criteria, list of applicable codes and regulations, and calculations. 2.2 DELEGATED DESIGN SERVICESA. Performance and Design Criteria:\

Where professional design services or certifications by a design professional are specifically required of Contractor by the Contract Documents, provide products and systems complying with specific performance and design criteria indicated:a. If criteria indicated are not sufficient to perform services or certification required, submit a written
request for additional information to Architect.B. Delegated Design Services Certification:

In addition to Shop Drawings, Product Data, and required submittals, submit digitally signed PDF electronic file and three paper copies of certificate, signed and sealed by the responsible design professional, for each product and system specifically assigned to Contractor to be designed or certified by a design professional:a. Indicate that products and systems comply with performance and design criteria in the Contract
Documents. Include list of codes, loads, and other factors used in performing these services.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 CONTRACTOR'S REVIEWA. Action and Informational Submittals: Review each submittal and check for coordination with other Work of the
Contract and for compliance with the Contract Documents. Note corrections and field dimensions. Mark with approval stamp before submitting to Architect.
B. Approval Stamp: Stamp each submittal with a uniform, approval stamp. Include Project name and location, submittal number, Specification Section title and number, name of reviewer, date of Contractor's approval, and statement certifying that submittal has been reviewed, checked, and approved for compliance with the Contract Documents.
3.2 ARCHITECT'S ACTIONA. Submittals: Architect will review each submittal, make marks to indicate corrections or revisions required, and
return it. Architect will stamp each submittal with an action stamp and will mark stamp appropriately to indicate action.
B. Partial submittals prepared for a portion of the Work will be reviewed when use of partial submittals has received prior approval from Architect.
C. Incomplete submittals are not permitted, will be considered nonresponsive, and will be returned for resubmittal without review.
D. Submittals not required by the Contract Documents will be returned by the Architect without action.

1.5 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTSA. Delegated Design: Engage a qualified professional engineer licensed in the State of California and
experienced in the design of railings, including attachment to building construction.B. Structural Performance:
1. Railings, including attachment to building construction, shall withstand the effects of gravity loads and the following loads and stresses within limits and under conditions indicated:a. Handrails and Top Rails of Guards:
1. Uniform load of 50 lbf/ ft. (0.73 kN/m) applied in any direction.2. Concentrated load of 200 lbf (0.89 kN) applied in any direction.3. Uniform and concentrated loads need not be assumed to act concurrently.4. Design shall comply with the CBC Live Loads Section 1607 CBC. Table 1607.1 (27)
b. Infill of Guards:1. Concentrated load of 50 lbf (0.22 kN) applied horizontally on an area of 1 sq. ft. (0.093 sq. m).2. Infill load and other loads need not be assumed to act concurrently.
C. Thermal Movements: 1. Allow for thermal movements from ambient and surface temperature changes:
a. Temperature Change: 120 degrees F (67 degrees C), ambient; 180 degrees F (100 degrees C, material surfaces).
D. Accessibility Requirements: 1. Railings and Handrails - According to CBC Section 11B-504:
a. Top of handrails shall be a consistent vertical height between 34” and 38” above walking and ramp surfaces, and stair nosing.
b. A minimum clearance of 1 ½ inches between handrail gripping and adjacent surfaces shall be maintained:1. Handrail may be in a recess if recess depth is a maximum of 3 inches and there is a minimum of
18 inches clearance above the top of the handrail.c. Handrail gripping shall be continuous and unobstructed. Bottoms of gripping surfaces shall not be
obstructed for more than 20 percent of their length. Where provided, horizontal projections shall occur 1 ½ inches minimum below the bottom of the handrail gripping surfaces:1. Outside diameter of handrail gripping surfaces with a circular cross section shall be between 1 ¼
inches and 2 inches.d. Outside diameter of handrail gripping surfaces with a non-circular cross section shall be between 4
inches and 6 ¼ inches, with a maximum cross-sectional dimension of 2 ¼ inches.e. Handrail gripping and adjacent surfaces shall be free of sharp and abrasive elements and have
rounded edges.f. Handrails shall be fixed and not able to rotate within their fittings.g. Handrail gripping surfaces shall extend beyond and in the same direction of stair flights and ramp
runs in accordance with CBC Section 11B-505.10. Such extensions are not required for continuous handrails at the inside turn of switchback or dogleg stairs and ramps.
h. The orientation of at least one handrail shall be in the direction of the stair run, perpendicular to the direction of the stair nosing, and shall not reduce the minimum required width of the stair, in accordance with CBC Section 11B-505.2.1.
i. A 2-inch minimum high curb or barrier shall be provided to prevent the passage of a 4-inch diameter sphere from rolling off the edges on a ramp or landing surface. Such a curb or barrier shall be continuous and uninterrupted along the length of a ramp, in accordance with CBC Section 11B-405.9.2.
1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLINGA. Protect mechanical finishes on exposed surfaces from damage by applying a strippable, temporary protective covering before shipping.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 MATERIALSA. Manufacturers are subject to compliance with requirements; provide products by the following:
1. Steel Pipe and Tube Railings:B. Metal Surfaces: Provide materials with smooth surfaces, without seam marks, roller marks, rolled trade
names, stains, discolorations, or blemishes.C. Brackets, Flanges, and Anchors:
1. Formed metal of same type of material and finish as supported rails unless otherwise indicated:a. Provide type of bracket with predrilled hole for exposed bolt anchorage and that provides 1-1/2-inch
(38 mm) clearance from inside face of handrail to finished wall surface.D. Steel and Iron:
1. Tubing: ASTM A500 (cold formed) or ASTM A513.2. Pipe: ASTM A53/A53M, Type F or Type S, Grade A, Standard Weight (Schedule 40), unless another
grade and weight are required by structural loads.3. Plates, Shapes, and Bars: ASTM A36/A36M.
E. Fasteners: 1. Provide the following:
a. Ungalvanized Steel Railings: Plated steel fasteners complying with ASTM B633 or ASTM F1941, Class Fe/Zn 5 for zinc coating.
b. Hot Dip Galvanized Railings: Type 304 stainless steel or hot dip zinc coated steel fasteners complying with ASTM A153/A153M or ASTM F2329 for zinc coating.
c. Provide exposed fasteners with finish matching appearance, including color and texture, of railings.d. Fasteners for Anchoring Railings to Other Construction: Select fasteners of type, grade, and class
required to produce connections suitable for anchoring railings to other types of construction indicated and capable of withstanding design loads.
e. Fasteners for Interconnecting Railing Components:1. Provide concealed fasteners for interconnecting railing components and for attaching them to
other work, unless otherwise indicated.2. Provide tamper resistant hex socket flat head machine screws for exposed fasteners unless
otherwise indicated.F. Miscellaneous Materials:
1. Welding Rods and Bare Electrodes: Select according to AWS specifications for metal alloy welded.2. Etching Cleaner for Galvanized Metal: Complying with MPI#25.3. Galvanizing Repair Paint: High zinc dust content paint complying with SSPC-Paint 20 and compatible with
paints specified to be used over it.4. Shop Primer for Ferrous Metal: Universal primer, organic zinc rich primer, complying with SSPC-Paint 20
and compatible with topcoat. Provide 10-99 (red) or 10-09 (gray) by Tnemec Company.5. Universal Shop Primer: Fast curing, lead and chromate free, universal modified alkyd primer and
compatible with topcoat. Use primer containing pigments that make it easily distinguishable from zinc rich primer.
6. Shop Primer for Galvanized Steel: Primer formulated for exterior use over zinc coated metal and compatible with finish paint systems indicated.
7. Galvanizing Repair Paint: High zinc dust content paint for regalvanizing welds in steel, complying with SSPC-Paint 20. Provide Tneme-Zinc 90-97 by Tnemec Company.
8. Bituminous Paint: Cold applied asphalt emulsion complying with SSPC-Paint 12, containing no asbestos fibers, or cold applied asphalt emulsion complying with ASTM D1187 ASTM D1187/D 1187M.
9. Non-shrink, Non-metallic Grout: Factory-packaged, non-staining, non-corrosive, non-gaseous grout complying with ASTM C1107/C1107M. Provide grout specifically recommended by manufacturer for interior and exterior applications.
2.2 FABRICATIONA. Fabricate railings to comply with requirements indicated for design, dimensions, member sizes and spacing,
details, finish, and anchorage, but not less than that required to support structural loads.B. Shop assemble railings to greatest extent possible to minimize field splicing and assembly. Disassemble units
only as necessary for shipping and handling limitations. Clearly mark units for reassembly and coordinated installation. Use connections that maintain structural value of joined pieces.
C. Cut, drill, and punch metals cleanly and accurately. Remove burrs and ease edges to a radius of approximately 1/32 inch (1 mm) unless otherwise indicated. Remove sharp or rough areas on exposed surfaces.
D. Form work true to line and level with accurate angles and surfaces.E. Fabricate connections that are exposed to weather in a manner that excludes water. Provide weep holes
where water may accumulate.F. Cut, reinforce, drill, and tap as indicated to receive finish hardware, screws, and similar items.G. Connections: Fabricate railings with either welded or non-welded connections unless otherwise indicated.H. Welded Connections:
1. Cope components at connections to provide close fit, or use fittings designed for this purpose. Weld all around at connections, including at fittings:a. Use materials and methods that minimize distortion and develop strength and corrosion resistance of
base metals.b. Obtain fusion without undercut or overlap.c. Remove flux immediately.d. At exposed connections, finish exposed surfaces smooth and blended so no roughness shows after
finishing and welded surface matches contours of adjoining surfaces.I. Welded Connections: Fabricate railings to interconnect members with concealed internal welds that eliminate
surface grinding, using manufacturer's standard system of sleeve and socket fittings.
J. Non-welded Connections: 1. Connect members with concealed mechanical fasteners and fittings. Fabricate members and fittings to
produce flush, smooth, rigid, hairline joints:a. Fabricate splice joints for field connection using an epoxy structural adhesive if this is manufacturer's
standard splicing method.K. Form Changes in Direction:
1. As detailed.2. Inserting prefabricated elbow fittings.
L. For changes in direction made by bending, use jigs to produce uniform curvature for each repetitive configuration required. Maintain cross section of member throughout entire bend without buckling, twisting, cracking, or otherwise deforming exposed surfaces of components.
M. Close exposed ends of railing members with prefabricated end fittings.N. Provide wall returns at ends of wall mounted handrails unless otherwise indicated. Close ends of returns
unless clearance between end of rail and wall is 1/4 inch (6 mm) or less.O. Brackets, Flanges, Fittings, and Anchors:
1. Provide wall brackets, flanges, miscellaneous fittings, and anchors to interconnect railing members to other work unless otherwise indicated:a. At brackets and fittings fastened to plaster or gypsum board partitions, provide crush resistant fillers
or other means to transfer loads through wall finishes to structural supports and prevent bracket or fitting rotation and crushing of substrate.
P. Provide inserts and other anchorage devices for connecting railings to concrete or masonry work. Fabricate anchorage devices capable of withstanding loads imposed by railings. Coordinate anchorage devices with supporting structure.
Q. For railing posts set in concrete, provide steel sleeves not less than 6 inches (150 mm) long with inside dimensions not less than 1/2 inch (13 mm) greater than outside dimensions of post, with metal plate forming bottom closure.
R. For removable railing posts, fabricate slip fit sockets from steel tube or pipe whose ID is sized for a close fit with posts; limit movement of post without lateral load, measured at top, to not more than one-fortieth of post height. Provide socket covers designed and fabricated to resist being dislodged.
S. Toe Boards: Where indicated, provide toe boards at railings around openings and at edge of open sided floors and platforms. Fabricate to dimensions and details indicated.
2.3 FINISHESA. Steel and Iron Finishes:
1. Galvanized Railings:a. Hot dip galvanize exterior steel railings, including hardware, after fabrication.b. Comply with ASTM A123/A123M for hot dip galvanized railings.c. Comply with ASTM A153/A153M for hot dip galvanized hardware.d. Do not quench or apply post galvanizing treatments that might interfere with paint adhesion.e. Fill vent and drain holes that are exposed in the finished Work, unless indicated to remain as weep
holes, by plugging with zinc solder and filing off smooth.2. For galvanized railings, provide hot-dip galvanized fittings, brackets, fasteners, sleeves, and other ferrous
components.3. Preparing Galvanized Railings for Shop Priming: After galvanizing, thoroughly clean railings of grease,
dirt, oil, flux, and other foreign matter, and treat with etching cleaner.4. For non-galvanized steel railings, provide non-galvanized ferrous metal fittings, brackets, fasteners, and
sleeves; however, galvanize anchors to be embedded in exterior concrete or masonry.5. Preparation for Shop Priming:
a. Prepare uncoated ferrous metal surfaces to comply with SSPC SP6/NACE No. 3 Commercial Blast Cleaning:1. Exterior Railings: SSPC SP6/NACE No. 3 Commercial Blast Cleaning.2. Railings Indicated to Receive Zinc Rich Primer: SSPC SP6/NACE No. 3 Commercial Blast
Cleaning.3. Other Railings: SSPC SP3 Power Tool Cleaning.
6. Primer Application: Apply shop primer to prepared surfaces of railings unless otherwise indicated. Comply with requirements in SSPC PA1 Shop, Field, and Maintenance Painting of Steel for shop painting. Primer need not be applied to surfaces to be embedded in concrete or masonry.
7. Do not apply primer to galvanized surfaces.8. Shop Painted Finish - Comply with Section 09 90 00: Painting and Coating:
a. Color and Gloss: Selected by Architect.9. High Performance Coating:
a. Apply epoxy intermediate and polyurethane topcoats to prime coated surfaces. Comply with coating manufacturer's written instructions and with requirements in SSPC PA1 Shop, Field, and Maintenance Painting of Steel for shop painting. Apply at spreading rates recommended by coating manufacturer:1. Color and Gloss: Selected by Architect.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 COORDINATIONA. Coordinate selection of shop primers with topcoats to be applied over them. Comply with paint and coating
manufacturers' written recommendations to ensure that shop primers and topcoats are compatible with one another.
B. Coordinate installation of anchorages for railings. Furnish setting drawings, templates, and directions for installing anchorages, including sleeves, concrete inserts, anchor bolts, and items with integral anchors, that are to be embedded in concrete or masonry. Deliver such items to Project site in time for installation.
C. Schedule installation so wall attachments are made only to completed walls. Do not support railings temporarily by any means that do not satisfy structural performance requirements.
3.2 FIELD CONDITIONSA. Field Measurements: Verify actual locations of walls and other construction contiguous with metal fabrications
by field measurements before fabrication.B. Grade elevation review to actual conditions.
3.3 EXAMINATIONA. Examine plaster and gypsum board assemblies, where reinforced to receive anchors, to verify that locations
of concealed reinforcements are clearly marked for Installer. Locate reinforcements and mark locations if not already done.
3.4 INSTALLATIONA. Fit exposed connections together to form tight, hairline joints.B. Perform cutting, drilling, and fitting required for installing railings. Set railings accurately in location, alignment,
and elevation; measured from established lines and levels and free of rack:1. Do not weld, cut, or abrade surfaces of railing components that are coated or finished after fabrication and
that are intended for field connection by mechanical or other means without further cutting or fitting.2. Set posts plumb within a tolerance of 1/16 inch in 3 feet (2 mm in 1 m).3. Align rails so variations from level for horizontal members and variations from parallel with rake of steps
and ramps for sloping members do not exceed 1/4 inch in 12 feet (6 mm in 3.5 m).C. Control of Corrosion:
1. Prevent galvanic action and other forms of corrosion by insulating metals and other materials from direct contact with incompatible materials:a. Coat, with a heavy coat of bituminous paint, concealed surfaces of aluminum that are in contact with
grout, concrete, masonry, wood, or dissimilar metals.D. Adjust railings before anchoring to ensure matching alignment at abutting joints.E. Fastening to In Place Construction: Use anchorage devices and fasteners where necessary for securing
railings and for properly transferring loads to in place construction.
3.5 RAILING CONNECTIONSA. Non-welded Connections: Use mechanical or adhesive joints for permanently connecting railing components.
Seal recessed holes of exposed locking screws using plastic cement filler colored to match finish of railings.B. Welded Connections: Use fully welded joints for permanently connecting railing components. Comply with
requirements for welded connections whether welding is performed in the shop or in the field.C. Expansion Joints: Install expansion joints at locations indicated but not farther apart than required to
accommodate thermal movement. Provide slip joint internal sleeve extending 2 inches (50 mm) beyond joint on either side, fasten internal sleeve securely to one side, and locate joint within 6 inches (150 mm) of post.
3.6 ANCHORING POSTSA. Use metal sleeves preset and anchored into concrete for installing posts. After posts are inserted into sleeves,
fill annular space between post and sleeve with non-shrink, non-metallic grout or anchoring cement, mixed and placed to comply with anchoring material manufacturer's written instructions.
B. Form or core drill holes not less than 5 inches (125 mm) deep and 3/4 inch (20 mm) larger than OD of post for installing posts in concrete. Clean holes of loose material, insert posts, and fill annular space between post and concrete with anchoring cement, mixed and placed to comply with anchoring material manufacturer's written instructions.
C. Cover anchorage joint with flange of same metal as post, welded to post after placing anchoring material.D. Anchor posts to metal surfaces with oval flanges, angle type, or floor type as required by conditions,
connected to posts and to metal supporting members:1. For aluminum pipe railings, attach posts using fittings designed and engineered for this purpose.2. For stainless steel pipe railings, weld flanges to post and bolt to supporting surfaces.3. For steel pipe railings, weld flanges to post and bolt to metal supporting surfaces.
E. Install removable railing sections, where indicated, in slip fit metal sockets cast in concrete.
3.7 ATTACHING RAILINGSA. Anchor railing ends at walls with round flanges anchored to wall construction and to railing ends using non-
welded connections.B. Anchor railing ends to metal surfaces with flanges bolted to metal surfaces and connected to railing ends
using non-welded connections.C. Attach railings to wall with wall brackets, except where end flanges are used. Locate brackets as indicated or,
if not indicated, at spacing required to support structural loads.D. Secure wall brackets and railing end flanges to building construction as follows:
1. For concrete and solid masonry anchorage, use drilled in expansion shields and hanger or lag bolts.2. For wood stud partitions, use hanger or lag bolts set into studs or wood backing between studs.
Coordinate with carpentry work to locate backing members.3. For steel framed partitions, use self-tapping screws fastened to steel framing or to concealed steel
reinforcements.
3.8 ADJUSTING AND CLEANINGA. Touchup Painting:
1. Immediately after erection, clean field welds, bolted connections, and abraded areas of shop paint, and paint exposed areas with the same material as used for shop painting to comply with SSPC PA1 requirements for touching up shop painted surfaces:a. Apply by brush or spray to provide a minimum 2.0 mil (0.05 mm) dry film thickness.
B. Galvanized Surfaces: Clean field welds, bolted connections, and abraded areas, and repair galvanizing to comply with ASTM A780/A780M.
3.9 PROTECTIONA. Protect finishes of railings from damage during construction period with temporary protective coverings
approved by railing manufacturer. Remove protective coverings at time of Substantial Completion.
