SOLAR ACCESS
- day lighting is very sufficient; 6 units face west, 4 south- 2 units that face north of east face larger open spaces
to make up for less direct sunlight- concrete walls reflect light into side wings of each unit- each unit has yard -> light of privacy

SOLAR ACCESS
- roof terraces face direction of windows, trellis controls sunlight (mainly an architectural detail)- concrete (slip-formed) walls offer passive heating- most bedrooms in complex have an exterior wall acting as a thermal mass facing south to retain heat for the evening- buildings all single-storey to allow light into neighboring yards

SOLAR ACCESS
Conclusion: there is very adequate lighting for such a high density residential development (single family) and the large amount of concrete used in the walls creates a high thermal mass for passive solar heating
Improvements: the only way to increase solar access is to space the houses further apart, but that is not practical in this situation
![Page 8: El Pueblo Ribera](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052521/543b32f1afaf9f4a578b45b1/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
SUSTAINABLE SITE DESIGN
Site layout sustainable for:- shared driveway + common garage reduces asphalt use- high density with 12 units on 200x125' lot, which is 3 times more dense than
a typical suburban lot, even though the environment provided resembles comfort of suburbia
- green spaces are protected, paving is minimized
![Page 9: El Pueblo Ribera](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052521/543b32f1afaf9f4a578b45b1/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
SUSTAINABLE SITE DESIGN
Improvements:- locate garages at street to eliminate alleyways (reduce impervious surfaces)- however, much of the usable space in the development is either the actual
housing or in yards and shrubs, so the site is effectively filled, with little space for changes
![Page 10: El Pueblo Ribera](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052521/543b32f1afaf9f4a578b45b1/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
NATURAL VENTILATION
- good layout for natural ventilation; courtyard effect maintains circulation by capturing winds- open rooms and the large windowed opening to the courtyard provide ample opportunity to allow air to flow into the building- upper floor is open to the outside, allowing residents to cool off at night during the summer time
![Page 11: El Pueblo Ribera](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052521/543b32f1afaf9f4a578b45b1/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
SOLAR SHADING
- the trellis provides solar shading over patio area, but are identical for units that are facing in different directions, therefore used specifically for solar shading, and are more for architectural purposes than sustainable. - otherwise, the sequencing of shrubs, yards, and buildings provides a high amount of shading to every window in the residence, regardless of position.
