Portraits of Success celebrates 25 years

Page 3: el observador Sept 17th

By Dave CorteseSupervisor Santa Clara County

Iam excited to announce a greatevent, the Carry the VisionCommunity Nonviolence Con-

ference. I would like to extend an invi-tation to you toattend this enlight-ening conferencewhich gathers hun-dreds of peoplefrom diverse sec-tors of the commu-nity who share acommon goal to

realize the potential of our human fam-ily to build a world that supports thewell being of all. A partnership of theCenter for Spiritual Enlightenment,Santa Clara University and my office, this year’s conference will be held onSaturday, October 16th from 10:00 AMto 4:00 PM at Santa Clara University,500 El Camino Real, Santa Clara.

We are supremely blessed to live inthe Valley of Heart’s Delight, amidstgreat innovation, multiculturalism andwillingness of everyday residents topitch in to make their neighborhoodsand community a better place to live, work and play. But we are not immuneto certain realities of the world that areoccurring in our own backyard, such asschool bullying, gang violence, domes-tic violence and racism, to name a few.I have seen these firsthand - during mytenure as a school board member andcity councilmember, and now as acounty supervisor. It’s both sickeningand saddening to see some neighbor-hoods plagued by cycles of violencewhere we should be building genera-tions of leaders.

Families and neighborhoodsplagued by violence often end up in thejuvenile dependency, juvenile delin-quency and safety net systems – so theneed for local government to play a rolein stemming the tide of violence cannotbe overstated.

Many great leaders, includingGhandi, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. andCesar Chavez, have used the tools ofnonviolence to enact change. This con-ference seeks to teach these tools ofnonviolence to local community mem-bers who see a need for change.Ghandi, King and Chavez had noblegoals. However these tools can be used

within your community to reduce theimpact of gangs, help victims of domes-tic violence and create harmony.

In previous years, we have had greatkeynote speakers such as Arun Ghandi,Dolores Huerta and Yolanda King, among others. This year we are joinedby the world renowned speaker, FatherJohn Dear, S.J. A Peace Activist and Au-thor, Father John Dear has been nomi-nated for the Nobel Peace Prize byArchbishop Desmond Tutu. In his ded-ication to nonviolence, Father Deartravels the world, illustrating the powerof nonviolence through both his wordsand actions.

Also speaking will be Reverend Dr.Bernard Lafayette, a longtime civilrights activist, organizer and authorityon nonviolent social change. He workedwith Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in thecivil rights movement.

In addition to these great speakers, there will be workshops and panel dis-cussions to discover the inspiration totake simple but profound steps towardhearing each other and healing ourearth. There will also be an all day sum-mit for youth – where they will learnhow to bring tools of nonviolence backto their streets and their schools. Theconference is designed to have partici-pants inspire each other by discoveringhow the human values of caring andcompassion can fuel our commitmentsto deep and profound change.

By taking part, you can learn thesimple tools that all the great leaders forchange utilized. These tools of nonvio-lence will allow you to take the actionswithin your life to make changes in yourcommunities. It is the power of the in-dividual within the community that canenact the greatest change.

I am truly excited about this year’sprogram, and I hope that you will beable to attend. With these fantasticspeakers, this event will surely sell out,so buy your tickets early! Tickets are$20 in advance, $25 at the door and $10for students.

If you would like more informationon this conference or would like to pur-chase tickets, please visit www.carry-thevision.org. As always, you can reachme at 408-299-5030 [email protected] withquestions on this or any other subject.

SACRAMENTO.-State Superintend-ent of Public Instruction Jack O’-Connell thanked Governor Arnold

Schwarzenegger and Lt. Governor Abel Mal-donado, who is acting governor whileSchwarzenegger is in Asia, for signing into lawSenate Bill (SB) 847 and Assembly Bill (AB)185. The two bills authorize the state to distrib-ute federal education funds and take effect im-mediately. “I applaud GovernorSchwarzenegger and Lt. Governor Maldonadofor getting the job done on behalf of ----stu-dents, teachers, and schools that have been bat-tered by years of budget cuts,” said O’Connell.“The signing of these two bills into law couldnot have come at a better time, just as millionsof students go back to school. These funds willsave and protect thousands of important jobs inCalifornia schools and provide the dual benefitof stimulating our economy, and helping stu-dents reach their full potential.”

California’s Constitution requires that with-out a state budget, any appropriation bill, likeSB 847 and AB 185, may not be sent to the gov-ernor’s desk unless the governor requests themby a formal letter. Governor Schwarzeneggermade the request yesterday to send SB 847 andAB 185 to him, because they constituted emer-gencies.

SB 847 was coauthored by state SenatePresident pro Tempore Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento), Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez(D-Los Angeles), and Assembly member TomTorlakson (D-Contra Costa). The measure pro-vides the California Department of Education(CDE) with the authority to allocate $1.2 billionfrom the federal Education Jobs Fund to schooldistricts. SB 847 is estimated to save 16,500 ed-ucation jobs in California. These funds will bedistributed based on the state’s revenue limitformulas.

infections. Without a strong immune response, infec-tions advance quickly. And gum disease, which starts offwith red, sore and bleeding gums, leads to periodontitis, aserious infection of the gums and the bones of the mouth. Those who develop periodontitis often lose their teeth.

The relationship between gum disease and diabetesproves a two-way street -; studies suggest that advancedgum disease raises blood sugar, making diabetes harder tocontrol. As gum disease worsens diabetes, and diabetesworsens gum disease, patients should strive to avoid thewhole cycle altogether.

Don't Let Diabetes Wipe That Smile From Your Facebiotic Mints (www.MyEvoraPlus.com) can help keep bad bacteriaat bay. The mints contain a mix of healthy bacteria, called Pro-Biora3, that adheres to the teeth and gums, leaving less room forbad bacteria to grow. In crowding out bad bacteria, the probioticmints naturally support tooth and gum health. The mints also gen-tly whiten teeth through the natural release of low-level hydrogenperoxide.

Diabetics can also avoid gum disease by controlling theirblood sugar. The higher the patients' blood glucose level, the morelikely they are to develop periodontitis and other oral infections.

Everyone should schedule dentist appointments every six

months, but diabetics must work closely with their dentists to de-velop oral health care plans. Dentists can offer diabetes-specifictooth care advice.

If patients smoke, they should talk to their dentists or doctorsabout quitting -; smoking drastically increases the risk of toothand gum disease.

Diabetics should be especially careful not to neglect routinebrushing and flossing. Patients should floss at least once a dayand brush their teeth with a soft-bristled brush after every mealand snack. Those wearing dentures should keep them clean. Δ
