It was a little girl who first saw themysterious shape in the distance.

Mientras la figura se acercaba, la niña sedio cuenta que era una mujer embarazadaa punto de dar a luz.

As the shape moved closer, she saw that itwas a heavily pregnant woman.

Tímida pero valientemente, la pequeñaniña se acercó a la mujer. “Tenemos quecuidar de ella,” decidieron los familiaresde la niña pequeña. “Ella y su bebéestarán a salvo con nosotros”.

Shy but brave, the little girl moved nearerto the woman. “We must keep her withus,” the little girl’s people decided. “We’llkeep her and her child safe.”

Al poco tiempo, el bebé empezó a nacer.“¡Puja!” “¡Traigan mantas!” “¡Agua!”“¡¡¡Puuuuujjjjjaaa!!!

The child was soon on its way. “Push!”“Bring blankets!” “Water!”“Puuuuussssshhh!!!”

Pero cuando vieron al recién nacido, todosse llevaron una gran sorpresa. “¡¿Unburro?!”

But when they saw the baby, everyonejumped back in shock. “A donkey?!”

Todos empezaron a discutir. “Prometimosque cuidaríamos de la madre y su hijo, yeso es lo que haremos,” decían algunos.“¡Pero ellos nos van a traer mala suerte!”decían otros.

Everyone began to argue. “We said wewould keep mother and child safe, andthat’s what we’ll do,” said some. “But theywill bring us bad luck!” said others.

Y así fue como la madre volvió a quedarsola otra vez. Se preguntaba qué hacercon este extraño bebé. Se preguntaba quéhacer consigo misma.

And so the woman found herself aloneagain. She wondered what to do with thisawkward child. She wondered what to dowith herself.

Pero finalmente tuvo que aceptar que eseera su bebé y que ella era su madre.

But finally she had to accept that he washer child and she was his mother.

Si el niño se hubiera quedado del mismotamaño, todo habría sido diferente. Peroel niño burro creció y creció hasta que sumadre no pudo cargarlo más en suespalda. Y no importaba cuánto lointentase, el niño burro no lograbacomportarse como un niño humano. Sumadre se la pasaba cansada y frustrada. Aveces ella le ordenaba hacer trabajo deanimales.

Now, if the child had stayed that same,small size, everything might have beendifferent. But the donkey child grew andgrew until he could no longer fit on hismother’s back. And no matter how hardhe tried, he could not behave like ahuman being. His mother was often tiredand frustrated. Sometimes she made him

do work meant for animals.

Burro sentía cada vez más confusión yrabia. Que no podía hacer esto, que nopodía hacer aquello. Que él no podía seresto ni aquello. Un día se puso tan furiosoque botó a su madre al suelo de unapatada.

Confusion and anger built up insideDonkey. He couldn’t do this and hecouldn’t do that. He couldn’t be like thisand he couldn’t be like that. He became soangry that, one day, he kicked his motherto the ground.

Burro se sintió lleno de vergüenza. Corriótan rápido y lejos como pudo.

Donkey was filled with shame. He startedto run away as far and fast as he could.

Cuando dejó de correr, ya era de noche yBurro estaba perdido. “¿Hiaaa?” susurróen la oscuridad. “¿Hiaaa?” le respondió sueco. Estaba solo. Se acurrucó y cayórendido en un sueño profundo eintranquilo.

By the time he stopped running, it wasnight, and Donkey was lost. “Hee haw?”he whispered to the darkness. “HeeHaw?” it echoed back. He was alone.Curling himself into a tight ball, he fell intoa deep and troubled sleep.

Cuando Burro despertó, había un extrañoanciano mirándolo. Burro le miró a losojos y comenzó a sentir una chispa deesperanza.

Donkey woke up to find a strange old manstaring down at him. He looked into theold man’s eyes and started to feel atwinkle of hope.

Burro se fue a vivir con el anciano, quienle enseñó muchas formas diferentes desobrevivir. Burro escuchaba y aprendía, ylo mismo hacía el anciano. Se ayudaban yreían juntos.

Donkey went to stay with the old man,who taught him many different ways tosurvive. Donkey listened and learned, andso did the old man. They helped eachother, and they laughed together.

Una mañana, el anciano le pidió a Burroque lo llevara hasta la cima de unamontaña.

One morning, the old man asked Donkeyto carry him to the top of a mountain.

Se quedaron dormidos más arriba de lasnubes. Burro soñó que su madre estabaenferma y que lo llamaba. Y cuandodespertó…

High up amongst the clouds they fellasleep. Donkey dreamed that his motherwas sick and calling to him. And when hewoke up…

…las nubes habían desaparecido junto consu amigo, el anciano.

… the clouds had disappeared along withhis friend, the old man.

Burro finalmente se dio cuenta de lo quetenía que hacer.

Donkey finally knew what to do.

Burro encontró a su madre, sola yllorando por su hijo perdido. Se quedaronmirándose a los ojos por largo tiempo.Luego se abrazaron muy apretadamente.

Donkey found his mother, alone andmourning her lost child. They stared ateach other for a long time. And thenhugged each other very hard.

El hijo burro y su madre ya llevan tiempocreciendo juntos y han aprendido aconvivir. Lentamente, otras familias se haninstalado a vivir cerca de ellos.

The donkey child and his mother havegrown together and found many ways ofliving side by side. Slowly, all around them,other families have started to settle.
