Uses of the gerund (the –ing form)

• The gerund is often the equivalent of by + present participle:

• Estudiando, tú aprendes (By studying, you learn)

• Trabajando, tú ganas dinero (By working, you earn money)

• Durmiendo, tú descansas (By sleeping, you rest )

How to form it:

• Regular -ar verbs: > drop the infinitive ending and add –ando. Ex.: Cantar > cantando

• Regular – er and –ir verbs: drop the infinitive and add –iendo. Ex.: Aprender > aprendiendo, vivir > viviendo

Gerundios that end in - yendo

• Caer cayendo ir yendo

• Construir construyendo leer leyendo

• Creer creyendo oír oyendo

• Destruir destruyendo traer trayendo

• Huir huyendo

Los irregulares

• Decir diciendo

• Dormir durmiendo

• Morir muriendo

• Pedir pidiendo

• Sentir sintiendo

• Conseguir consiguiendo

• Corregir corrigiendo

The progresive tenses

• Used to talk about an action that is ( was or will be) in progress at the moment indicated.

• Verbs such estar, seguir, continuar are used to create such progressive forms

• Exs.: Los niños están corriendo/ The children are running

• Ella estaba leyendo/She was reading

• (/Ellos/ellas/uds) siguen escribiendo/They continue writing

• These ones are not usually used to create progressive tenses. Instead use simple tenses. Exs.: Ella viene aquí/She is coming her or Rosa iba al parque/Rosa was going to the park
