Operating Instructions

578926 REV A

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) InjectorsEL-50928-A activates the DEF injector to verify the spray pattern. The DEF injector must be removed from the exhaust, and the DEF pump must be activated using Isuzu IDSS or a scan tool to pressurize the system. With EL-50928-1 harness connected between the DEF injector and EL-50928-2 tester, the DEF injector nozzle is directed into a suitable container, and EL-50928-2 injector tester is used to trigger the injector. The injector spray pattern is visually inspected for shape or irregularities.

Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) InjectorsEL-50928-A is used to measure the fuel volume injected through the DPF injector in a specific time. The injector is removed from the engine and installed into EN-51614 DPF Injector Test Adapters. EL-50928-5 DPF injector test harness and EL-50928-2 injector tester are connected to the DPF injector. Once a hose is installed onto the end of the injector and into a graduated cylinder from J-45873 fuel volume tester to measure the volume of fuel passed through the injector, the engine is started and run. EL-50928-2 is used following published service information to test the DPF injector.

Gasoline Engine Fuel InjectorsEL-50928-2 injector tester will activate a fuel injector to allow mea-surement of fuel line pressure drop using three different pulse ranges: 1 pulse at 500 Milliseconds, 50 pulses at 10 Milliseconds, 100 pulse at 5 Milliseconds. This pulse allows a measured amount of fuel to be sprayed into the engine reducing the pressure in the fuel rail. All injectors in the engine should measure the same pressure drop within manufactures specifications. Some applications may require an adapter, such as 306677 (included) or others.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS• ALL WARNING statements must be observed to help prevent personal injury.

• All operators must read and carefully follow the operating instructions and the safety precautions before assembly or use of this tester.

• To reduce the risk of fire and personal injury, release the fuel system pressure before servicing the fuel system components.

• Wrap a shop towel around the fuel pressure gauge tap to absorb any small amount of fuel leakage that may occur when installing or disconnecting the gauge.

• All testing must be done in a well ventilated area.

• Safety glasses must be worn at all times.

• Make sure the vehicle being tested is securely blocked before any testing is started.

• Keep lighted cigarettes, sparks, flames or any other ignition sources away from the fuel rail at all times.

TEST PROCEDURES

DEF Injector Test Procedure1. Remove the DEF injector from the exhaust, and direct the nozzle into a suitable container. Do not disconnect the DEF line to the injector.

2. Disconnect the DEF injector harness.

3. Connect EL-50928-1 harness between the DEF injector and EL-50928-2 injector tester.

4. Set the tester to 500 mSec pulse.

5. Connect the red lead of EL-50928-2 to a positive battery post.

6. Connect the black lead to a clean ground.

7. Activate the DEF pump using Isuzu IDSS to pressurize the system.

8. Use EL-50928-2 to trigger the injector.

9. Visually inspect the DEF injector spray pattern for shape or irregularities.

10. Refer to the vehicle service information for additional information.

DPF Injector Test Procedure1. Remove the injector from the manifold and install into EN-51614-1 clamp plate, using EN-51614-2 sealing plate and EN-51614-3 gasket to seal the manifold.

2. Install a hose over the DPF injector tip and into a graduated cylinder from J-45873 Fuel Volume Test Kit.

3. Connect EL-50928-5 injector test harness between the DPF injector and EL-50928-2 injector tester.

4. Connect the red lead of EL-50928-2 to a positive battery post.

5. Connect the black lead to a clean ground

6. Run the engine and follow published service procedures to measure the amount of fuel injected.

Gasoline Engine Injector Test Procedure1. Connect EL-50928-2 injector tester to an injector or to the injector harness using the supplied adapter. If access to the injector is restricted, additional adapters are available.

2. Connect the red clip to a positive battery post.

3. Connect the black clip to a clean ground.

4. Connect the pressure gauge to the fuel line manifold (See Fuel Pressure Gauge operating instructions for proper adapters and procedures).

5. Turn the ignition ON to pressurize the fuel line.

a. Record the gauge pressure reading.

b. Turn the ignition OFF. The gauge pressure should hold. If pressure does not hold, see the vehicle service manual for specifications and procedures.

c. Select the same pulse range for all Injectors tested.

d. Push the “Activate Injector” button on the tester once.

e. Record the low pressure reading shown on the gauge.

f. Subtract the low pressure reading (step e) from beginning pressure reading (step a) to find the amount of pressure drop.

6. Connect EL-50928-2 to each injector to be tested and repeat step 5.

7. Refer to the vehicle service manual specifications to determine if the injectors are out of tolerance.

When the testing is completed, use the bleed valve to release the pressure from the gauge before

disconnecting the gauge from the fuel line manifold.
