The armed

o p p o s i t i o n

movements in

Northeast India have

had varied origins. Yet,

w i d e s p r e a d

dissatisfaction with the

Indian state, which

believes in dealing with

the differences and

dissenting forces

through armed

repression rather than

political dialogue, is

one underlying

commonality in all

these movements.

While some major

armed opposition

movements in

different states of

Northeast India have

attracted the attention

of scholars, no

academic studies have

been carried out on the

armed opposition

movement of the

Kukis. The paper

therefore attempts to

examine the Kuki

armed opposition

movement with

reference to Kuki

National Organisation

(KNO) and United

People’s Front (UPF).

The Kukis The word

‘Kuki’ is a generic term

referring to an ethnic

entity spread out in a

region straddling

northwest Myanmar

(Burma), the

Chittagong Hill tracts

in Bangladesh and

Northeast India. In

Northeast India, they

are mainly in the states

of Manipur, Mizoram,

Assam, Nagaland,

Tripura and

Meghalaya; and in

Burma, mostly in the

Sagaing Division.1 The

Kukis, though

separated by

i n t e r n a t i o n a l

boundaries of India,

Burma and

Bangladesh can

understand one

another’s dialect as

they had inherited a

common social and

cultural life.2 The tribes

connoted by Kuki

during the British rule

include Aimol, Anal,

Biate, Chothe, Chiru,

Gangte, Hmar, Halam

Kuki, Khelma, Koireng,

Kom, Lamkang, Lushai,

Moyon, Monsang,

Paite, Pawi, Purum,

Ralte, Simte, Sukte,

Tarao, Thadou, Zou,

etc. Based on common

ethnicity, the

Scheduled Castes and

Scheduled Tribes list

recognised them

under ‘Any Kuki Tribes’

in the states of Assam,

Meghalaya and

Tripura in 1950, and

Manipur and Mizoram

in 1951. In Nagaland,

they are recognised

simply as ‘Kuki’. In

contrast, recognition

of the genealogically

linked clans of Kuki as

different tribes by the

Scheduled Castes and

Scheduled Tribes list

(Modification) Order

of 1956 began the

process of the

disintegration of Kuki

identity. The

reintroduction of ‘Any

Kuki Tribes’ in 2003 to

make the Kuki identity

inclusive seems to be a

temporary solution

and for a long-term

solution, it would be

constructive to

consider a uniform

pattern of recognition

that would go a long

way in restoring the

Kuki identity to its

logical conclusion. In

spite of the emergence

of several tribes with
