Presidential ReflectionsPresident of the Rotary Club of Bendigo 2005 - 2006

Rotarian Malcolm AndrewA highlight of this year was celebrating our 80th birthday hosted by the Rotary Club of Bendigo Strathdaleand attended by nearly 300 Rotarians and guests representing the wider Family of Rotary. Both our parentclub the R.C. of Melbourne and those clubs that our club was instrumental in forming were present alongwith dignitaries from the City of Greater Bendigo, representatives of other service organisations and ofRotary district 9800. This night was a tribute to those members both past and present who have contributedto developing this wonderful organisation Rotary International.

As President I have been very aware of the honour and responsibility of this position and I wish to thankall members for their encouragement and assistance in achieving our objectives this year. You alsoexperience at first hand the commitment of Rotarians to the motto “Service above Self” with their effortsboth within the club with our projects as well as on District and National committees in implementing thewider goals of Rotary International. My Board and committee chairpersons have contributed selflessly infulfilling their directorships in the widest definitions possible in completing a very satisfying year. Aspecial thank you to Secretary Daniel Buttolph and Treasurer Gary Handley for all their efforts. On behalfof the Club special thanks to Zerin Knight and I.P.P. Jane McLean for contributions beyond their Boardresponsibilities. Zerin with all the Club publicity and Cluster presentation to the Conference and Jane forher assistance in compiling this Annual Report.

Community Service saw the continuation of successful projects including Carols by Candlelight and theEaster Art Show, an exhibition which is going from strength to strength with a strong increase in sales aswell as the quality of the total exhibition which included an exciting display of Primary School art underthe tutelage of local artist Terry Jarvis. More details are included in the full report elsewhere in this AnnualReport. While these activities involved whole of club participation, there were many other times whensmaller groups of our members helped with catering in Day for People with a Disability or during theCommonwealth Games in the Park. We have continued our involvement on the District Committeesupporting the continuing re-development of Camp Getaway. During the year we have had on-goingdiscussions with “The Golden Trail” committee from L.T.U.B. headed by Peter Dingle who are developingthe walking trail between Robe S.A. and Bendigo. A small group are developing plans for Roofed Sheltersbetween Castlemaine and Bendigo for the opening planned for mid-January 2007.

We have been pleased to co-operate with other clubs in our Goldfields Cluster principally with the AnnualSwap Meet in November, which helped to raise valuable funding for the Bendigo Youth Choir’s newrisers, as well as the aptly named “Challenge 1000” raffle organised in conjunction with the Rotary Clubof Bendigo/Sandhurst and to support their wonderful initiative “Adopt a Village” being the reconstructionof part of the village of Ambolangoda in southern Sri Lanka. For this we are deeply indebted to JimmyPossum Furniture and their owners Margot and Alan Spalding who kindly donated the major prize and

continue to support our club in so many tangible ways. They also sponsored fully three of their employeeson the reconstruction trip to Samoa details of which are covered more fully elsewhere in this report. Thankyou also to Ruffell Family Jewellers and P.P. Jane and John McLean who provided raffle prizes andleadership to successfully complete this project.

Another initiative which came about as a result of a natural disaster was the “Cyclone Larry” appeal, proposed and promoted by P.P. Kevin Reilly whereby we were instrumental in raising well in excess of$10,000 in a few weeks through the generosity of local Bendigo businesses and citizens to give someimmediate financial assistance to those whose lives had been devastated overnight. All money raised wasforwarded directly through the Salvation Army and doesn’t appear in our Treasurer’s Report. Kevinreported that this prompt response was greatly appreciated by the residents.

The Family of Rotary has been another important theme for this year and, under the leadership of RosalieVanstan, we have maintained contact with senior members, members celebrating important occasions, themembership at large at the Sebastian Pub as well as two new member “fireside evenings” and a Christmasafternoon tea for the over-seventies. Some significant highlights were P.P. Hal Moors achieving 90 yearsas well as Ron Meurer and Tom Tweed joining Hal with 50 years of Rotary membership. P.H.F. VioleeDavey celebrated her 100th birthday this month.

The Program Committee kept our membership entertained and interested with a wide and varied range ofguest speakers throughout the year. The Fellowship committee’s highlights included a most enjoyableProgressive Dinner as well as the Great Penna Breakfast. The Men’s Health committee once againconducted a most successful week of activities highlighting the need for males to be more pro-active.Membership has had a slight gain for the year but remains a topic which requires constant attention if weare to remain vibrant and meaningful to our community.

We once again participated in the Exchange Student program with in-coming student Christoph Meundersfrom Dusseldorf in Germany as well as outgoing students James Opie to Sweden and Alexis Bertolotti toSwitzerland.

On the International scene we hosted two Malaysian teachers as well as the incoming G.S.E. team fromSouth Korea. Our grateful thanks to all host families, Andrew and Heather Hampton and Alma Leamonfor providing venues for social interaction.

I wish to congratulate D.G. John Wigley and Fran for their leadership, friendship and support during theyear culminating in a wonderful District Conference at Geelong. Our sincere thanks are extended to A.G.of Goldfields Cluster Anne Peace who, despite a difficult personal year, supplied wonderful support, encouragement and friendship.

It is my great pleasure to bestow the honour of “Paul Harris Fellow” on two outstanding Rotarians, P.P.Colin Burns and P.P. Bryan McMahon.

Club Service Director - Zerin KnightThanks to a wonderful team of Rotarians, club service for the year was a great success. This section outlines someof the key activities of the committees involved in helping to provide interesting meetings and events for membersand their families, as well as keeping them, other Rotary clubs and the general community informed.

FellowshipCo-ordinator - Barry PennaA variety of enjoyable events provided opportunities for fun in an informal environment and included a bowls night, the Penna Breakfast, a progressive dinner, barbecues, Friday night drinks, and evening quiz meetings. The club’s80th birthday celebrations in August, the Melbourne Cup meeting in November, and the Christmas dinner were alsoexcellent fellowship events. As an added bonus, the fellowship functions were successful fundraisers.

Family of RotaryCo-ordinator - Rosalie Vanstan The September 18, 2005 pub lunch for families at Little Sebastian Hotel was a huge success, with our club takingover the entire venue. The sun shone and fun was had by all. There was positive feedback also about the Christmasafternoon tea for senior members and partners on December 4, 2005. The Christmas joy was shared with widows, widowers and those who have experienced difficulties during the year. Two fireside chats for new members to findout about our club and Rotary generally were greatly appreciated and enjoyed by all who attended. Regular contactwas maintained with members or their partners who were ill or hospitalised during the year, which was appreciatedby all concerned. Contact is maintained with senior members, David Peake and PP Clarke Jeffery, who are both arein nursing homes; and news on senior member Bruce Williamson is regularly conveyed to the club through hisbrother, Leigh.

MembershipCo-ordinator - Simon EmpsonMembership as at the end of May 2006 was 84, comprising 79 Ordinary Members and 5 Honorary Members. Thiswas short of the targeted 87 for the year ending June 2006. In retrospect, a net gain of four new members was a littleambitious, given the general decline in Bendigo in volunteer organisation numbers. However, the need for growthand retention of members was acknowledged as a priority. A plan to increase the club’s membership and retainexisting members was discussed and will be progressed in the 2006-2007 year.

AttendanceCo-ordinator - Frank LeanThe table below shows that monthly attendance figures fluctuated between 67% and 89%, with the YTD attendanceof 74% as at the end of May 2006, close to the targeted 75% figure.

Monthly meeting and membership figures were:

* Attendances were inflated in November, December and April by members claiming make-ups for workat the Swap Meet, Carols and Art Show respectively.

Public RelationsCo-ordinator - Zerin KnightA highlight of the year was our club’s 80th birthday celebrations, hosted by the Rotary Club of Bendigo Strathdale. On August 23, 2005, almost 300 guests from across Victoria enjoyed a sensational event that nurtured intra andinter–club relationships and strengthened ties with key members of the local community. A presentation by localABC radio personality, Jonathan Ridnell, of “This is Your Life” with snippets of music by Harlequin from the eraof each club’s charter date had the audience enthralled. Images featuring significant events in the club’s 80 yearhistory flashed across the screen throughout dinner and attracted many positive comments from guests. Romanticmelodies and some upbeat music from popular duo, Harlequin, was enjoyed during dinner and afterwards asRotarians and guests took to the dance floor. The birthday celebrations were featured in the December 2005 issueof Rotary Down Under as well as in the Bendigo Weekly, The Advertiser and on ABC radio. Other publicityincluded stories in The Advertiser and Rotary Down Under on former exchange student, Bill Wiggins’ donation andthe Paul Harris Sapphire awards to Garry Gunnell and Ray Paulsen. The Rotary Health Safari Bendigo visit onOctober 21 and 22, 2005 was also covered by The Advertiser. On Thursday, November 24, 2005, The Advertiser, ran a story and photograph on the visit to special schools in Bendigo by Adawai Nuri and Esther Chin, two teachersfrom Kuala Lumpur hosted by our club through the Group Study Exchange program.

DirectoryCo-ordinator - Frank LeanThe 2006-2007 members directory is in progress and is on track for delivery at the President’s changeover dinneron June 24, 2006.

BulletinCo-ordinator - Peter ReadingWeekly updates published in our club’s newsletter, Fossicker, were informative and amusing. Regular messagesfrom President Malcolm kept Rotarians informed about guest speakers and major events, while the new diarysection proved a handy reminder of upcoming fellowship functions and other scheduled club activities. A jokessection added a touch of humour for members to enjoy.

HistoryCo-ordinator - Bruce ReidPlans for producing an electronic version of the club’s history have commenced. The club’s historical data from2002/03 is stored on floppy discs and CD’s while information up to 2002 is in hard copy format stored at BreenStreet Self Storage. Directors have received information on the club’s new web site. A style sheet is under way andwill be used as a basis for data input by each director once completed. This will address many of the problemsassociated with maintaining and housing historical records and provide an updated, contemporary and current website for the club.

Each person, who has attempted to raise much needed funds and bring a little laughter to ourmeetings, is to be congratulated on their efforts. Thanks must also go to each Rotarian who willingly paid their finesirrespective of the accuracy of accusation made against them.

Rotary FoundationDirector – Colin BurnsThe mission of The Rotary Foundation is to support the efforts of Rotary International in the fulfillment of theObject of Rotary, Rotary’s mission, and the achievement of world understanding and peace through local, national, and international humanitarian, educational, and cultural programs. Our club has a tradition of support for andparticipation in the programs of the Rotary Foundation. Rotary Foundation related activities during this yearincluded the following:

• The utilisation of funds obtained by way of a Matching Grant from the Rotary Foundation, together with thosedonated by our Club and a number of other clubs in District 9800, for the implementation of a humanitarian projectin Samoa. Completion of the project saw the supply and installation, by a team of Rotary Volunteers, of a non-polluting toilet system at school at the remote village of Lona and the supply of materials for fences at the schoolsat two neighboring villages.

• A Group Study Exchange (GSE) Team from District 3660, South Korea visited Bendigo and Ian and BarbaraAlexander, Hugh and Sue Wheeler, Malcolm and Elaine Andrew and Rosalie Vanstan home hosted the GSE teammembers. During their time in Bendigo the GSE Team visited a number of businesses and enjoyed wonderfulfellowship with their hosts.

Community ServiceDirector – Hugh WheelerThe intent of this avenue of service is to be responsive and sensitive to those activities, which are identified as beingconducive to, and are assessed as being capable of, actively contributing to the quality of life within our community.

The following is a report on those programs conducted by the Club during this Rotary year.

38th Annual Easter Art Show and SalesAdministrative Co-ordinator - Bryan McMahonThe 2006 Easter Art Show was a great success, benefiting from the move to the Town Hall 3 years ago, and changesmade to make awards non-acquisitive last year. Pauline Carson and her team of volunteers certainly addedprofessionalism to the hanging of the artwork, and we are indebted to these people who take time from work to assistus.

The quality of paintings displayed has improved dramatically, with sales almost $73,000, an increase of $32,000 on2005. Profit will be, in excess of $27,000. 181 artists displayed 567 paintings and sculptures, with 125 sales. Aninnovation this year was the sale of 5 prints, courtesy of Rural Finance Corporation in Bendigo, which brought inover $1,200. The Bendigo Advertiser was major sponsor this year, contributing $2,000 and a similar amount inadvertising. Other sponsors were Bendigo Community Telco, Bendigo Bank and Ray Wild Plumbing.

Follow Your Bliss Career Coaching sponsored Student Art again, which this year featured a display of 1 50 paintingsby students from Prep to Grade 6 at Eaglehawk Primary School. Our judge this year, Simon Klose, Director ofBenalla Art Gallery was very impressed with the student art, and has set a challenge to our Club to develop thisconcept further.

Special thanks to Kurt Walder, who each year contributes a huge amount of time to the Art Show, and to FionaSmethurst and Margaret Tope for their organization of the preview evening.

Finally thanks to all Rotarians and their partners who assisted in any way over Easter.

Men’s Health WeekCo-ordinator - Brian DohertyThe Club was again an active participant in Men’s Health Week, which was conducted from 5th –9th September.

The theme for the week was, “Communication – Talk it up”.

The outstanding success of the week’s scheduled events where total attendance exceeded 2000, supported theconviction that given the right environment men will communicate and consider their health.

In particular the breakfast meetings held at the Boardwalk Café where speakers of the calibre of Rob DeCastella andAndrew Gaze were in attendance and the play “Certified Male” held at the Capital Theatre featuring Glynn Nicholasand Co. and Dr. John Smith were significant events. In addition as part of the week’s program 10 sessions were held at 7 schools with 4 quality speakers and 7 other menorientated events were conducted during the week.

Sincere thanks to those Rotarians who actively supported this highly successful program.

Rotary Health SafariCo-ordinators - John Krakowiak & Zerin Knight

The aim of this Safari was to help Australians become more aware of the problems associated with mental illnessand depression and the value of the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund, which will have expended $12 millionon research and grants at the completion of 2006.

The Safari was set up in an 11-metre Winnebago “explorer” motor home, which Winnebago Industries donated andspent six months travelling over 35,000 kms around Australia visiting all 23 Rotary Districts. The display was setup 233 times.

In Bendigo on October 21 and 22 it was located at the site of major sponsor Harvey Norman, Kangaroo Flat.

People were able to use onboard computers to access information from the beyond blue website, undertake adepression or anxiety test and select appropriate brochures or watch a professional video on the topic.

The Safari achieved all its objectives. Access to the beyond blue website increase by over 40% during the Safariprogram and several hundred people used the onboard computer cluster.

Congratulations to those Rotarians who assumed responsibility for this program and gave their time and effort toensure its success.

Bowel ScanCo-ordinators - Malcolm Andrew & Daniel Buttolph

For the 7th consecutive year the Club actively promoted this program during the year with particular emphasisduring the month of May.

This program is identified as a project of the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund and now is also a Districtprogram.

The Bowelscan kits are distributed through district pharmacies with 18 Bendigo, 3 Eaglehawk and 2 Castlemaineand 3 Echuca pharmacies participating. Sales of the kits exceeded 1000. A further development this year resultedin one organisation supporting testing for up to 40 of its staff.

The aim of the project is to achieve mass public screening and to raise the general level of public awareness of themost common form of internal cancer in people aged 40 years and over.

Special thanks are due to Daniel Buttolph and co-ordinator Malcolm Andrew who are responsible for the efficientoperation of this important project on behalf of the Club.

On Sunday December 18 this annual program was again conducted at Lake Weeroona commencing at 6.15pm. infine conditions with a varied pre entertainment program. This year the formal evening program was under thedirection of Mrs. Bev. Leeson to whom we express our sincere thanks both for her valued input during planning andher professional leadership during the evening.

The Committee were able to attract significant advertising and sponsorship which contributed in offsetting thenumerous fixed costs associated in conducting the evening.

A consequence of this support was that a major raffle not conducted.

Santa and his sleigh pulled by the impeccably behaved dog team were again the highlight of the evening.

Once again we acknowledge the substantial contribution to a successful event by members of Inner Wheel throughprovision of barbeque, drinks and confectionary facilities.

We wish to acknowledge those Rotarians who committed their time and effort in setting up and who, after the event, worked late to diligently dismantle the stage, lighting, tents and fittings in order to return the site to its originalcondition.

Environment CommitteeCo-ordinator - Graeme Searle

Adopt A HighwayThe annual working bee to clean up the 3k section of the McIvor Highway allocated to the Club was conducted onSunday 4 June 2006.

Thanks to those Rotarians who braved the elements to participate. A job well done once again.

Participation in Project GrowtreeThis project which aims to plant 2 million trees on an ongoing project in conjunction with the North CentralCatchment Authority on land centred around Bendigo was again deferred due to adverse environmental conditions.

Bendigo Swap MeetCo-ordinator - Garry GunnellThe Annual Bendigo Swap Meet held on 11-13 November again proved to be a large undertaking in providing foodfor the many thousands attending at the Bendigo Show Grounds.

As usual the efforts from the combined Rotary Clubs of Bendigo proved equal to the task with some enjoyablefellowship had by all.

This year we had the new hurdle to jump with a brand new venue for the luncheon hall and facilities that requiredextra resources to manage. The learning experience will benefit future years and I am sure will only continue toimprove the bottom line.

We again saw over $40,000.00 raised for the use towards worthwhile Rotary projects with the major beneficiary thisyear being the Bendigo Youth Choir. Funds were provided to purchase the desperate need for new choir stands andthis will benefit the Youth Choir for many years to come.

While the organizing committee put in many hours of planning and preparation this event can not be successfulwithout the many volunteers who assist on the weekend of the Swap Meet.

Significant thanks must be passed onto those volunteers and we ask that you again reserve the weekend of 18th and19th November 2006 for this years Swap Meet.

Bendigo Regional FoodbankCo-ordinator - Des SamsonThis project arose following adoption of a proposal forwarded from Foodbank Victoria Ltd and the RC ofCamberwell to the combined Rotary Clubs of Bendigo to establish a Foodbank in Bendigo. The RC of Camberwellis underwriting the project initially.

The aim of the project is to provide a way to enhance the flow of food to and from the Bendigo region whilst alsoproviding a single collection point for all welfare agencies to deliver a wider range of food products to theirrecipients.

To plan and manage the project two committees were established comprising representatives of the Rotary Clubs ofBendigo, Bendigo Uniting Care Outreach, St Vincent DePaul, Salvation Army, View Hill and University chaplains.

Initially a new warehouse in Garsed Street is being fitted out with pallet racking, forklift and other ancillaryequipment. It is proposed that the project will shift to a permanent location in the new Peter Harcourt Centre whencompleted.

Operation in Garsed Street will commence in the near future and will prove beneficial to all local welfare groupswho are undergoing unprecedented increasing demand for their services. The Foodbank will operate with minimal overheads, recoup costs through a minimal handling charge on all goodsand become self-funding.

It is to be administered by a local Management Committee, which will include a representative of the RC ofBendigo.

Circus Quirkus Co-ordinator - Jane McLean

Circus Quirkus is a highly successful fundraising program, whereby sponsorship is sought to enable special needsand disadvantaged children from our community to attend a professional circus at no cost.

The performance was held on 3 July 2005, with excellent feedback from attendees. Over the past two years theprogram raised over $50,000 which was contributed back to the community in funding youth programs.

The decision not to continue running the Circus Quirkus program was taken following much consideration anddiscussion with District 9800 leadership principally regarding the telemarketing aspects of this program. RotaryInternational’s policy states they do not agree with Clubs using external telemarketing services, believing such useof external services brings Rotary International into disrepute within the community.

This, together with our inability to run a successful fundraising program without using these services, lead to thedecision not to pursue this program, which has now been taken up by another fundraising group, targeting the samedatabase of sponsors and providing the same Circus to the same special needs and disadvantaged patrons.

In foregoing the right to run this highly successful fundraising program, members of the Rotary Club of Bendigoneed to give considerable thought as to how the shortfall of approximately $25,000 per annum can be raised toensure our continued ability to fund community programs.

District 9800 Camp GetawayCo-ordinator - John Flood

This is a District 9800 project to provide a camp for special needs people based at the former Rotary Club ofBendigo Youth Campsite at Axedale.

The site is being redeveloped to provide a 100 bed modern facility.

Stage 1 has been completed with the assistance of a $500,000 contribution from the Victorian GovernmentCommunity Support Fund, which is being matched by Rotary on a 1:1 basis.

Stage 2 is under way and involves construction of a second twenty-bed dormitory, which is at “lock-up” stage.

The Club continues its active support and involvement in the on-going project.

Through provision of 3 members on the Board of Management, including that of Treasurer, and the hands-onparticipation of numerous members of the RC Bendigo in the four working bees conducted throughout the year.

Probus ClubsThere are at present 10 Probus Clubs operating in Bendigo, a number of who have been sponsored by this Club.

The Club continues to provide support as requested and participates in aspects of some Clubs change overprograms.

This year’s district conference was held in Geelong and certainly attracted a big roll up. Twelve members, partnersand our club’s exchange student attended and witnessed a superb program of key note speakers, Rotary informationand musical entertainment. Our annual club dinner with Melbourne South Rotary was one of the highlights andsomething to look forward to at each District Conference. All members are encouraged to attend district conferencesas it is one place you hear just how much Rotary is doing in the local and international communities. International ServiceDirector - Kurt WalderThe Year has been quite busy due to International disaster relief and, Cyclone Larry which caused an unexpectedimpact to the Cape York peninsula of Queensland , Australia. Such disaster is a major Non-International event(Australia- Cape York), but cannot be ignored due to the fact that it was a devastating disaster affecting people’slives, health & amenities, housing and infrastructure.

President Malcolm Andrew has been most mindful of the necessity of continued support towards our Club’s existingprojects, and, open to new suggestions.

Cyclone Larry - PP Kevin Reilly initiated ‘immediate support’ with resounding success.

Western Samoa - Our Club’s ongoing project- maintenance and modifications.

Waterless toilets & school buildings have been important provisions, during past work parties.

Our Club has continued to support RAMS and Wheel Chair International.

The Tsunami disaster relief has our continued support, in co-ordination with a local Bendigo Rotary Club. PP BrianDoherty, with valued support from our members, organized a very successful informal Lawn Bowls evening andClub general meeting.

This year we have continued support for the Fred Hollows Foundation, with planned follow-up of informationduring the oncoming year. We have now received a certificate of appreciation.

Additionally, our Club is viewing project options in conjunction with local Bendigo Rotary Clubs.

President Malcolm is enthusiastic of such International support.

Having attended some Melbourne meetings of Rotary International Service (District 9800), it is obvious that manyaims and objectives are in place.

New GenerationsDirector - Garry SpenceNew Generations has continued with supporting our younger generation to develop interest in community andworldwide topics and provide the mechanism to assist the personal growth and leadership skills of the selectedparticipants. Our club continues to sponsor attendees but have experienced difficulty at times finding students withan interest in the programs.

We have seen a greater bond between the activities of clubs in the Bendigo area with joint sponsorships and betteropportunities for more to be involved in the many worthy programs. Under the guidance of Assistant DistrictGovernor Anne Peace, we are part of a New Generations Group involving all of the Bendigo clubs. This gives abetter understanding of the activities between the clubs and ensures that participation is increased.

Our club is excited by the development and interest in Interact in several of the secondary schools in Bendigo. Evenin its infancy the feedback is exceptional and the opportunities are being pursued to aid the growth of the clubs atthe junior campuses and further develop the interest at the senior colleges. These dedicated students are our futureRotarians and we should continue to build on their initiatives and strengthen their commitment to better ourcommunity of tomorrow.

The Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA)Is a seven-day residential seminar for young people aged 17 to 25 with exceptional leadership qualities. Importantly,it not only focuses on professional and personal development skills, but also addresses issues involving family, social and professional conflict.

Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN)Is a weekend seminar for year 10 and 11 students to communicate and debate ideas and issues thus assisting themto clarify their own values and standards. Unlike RYLA< RYPEN is not designed for high achievers but rather forthose with potential. We usually sponsor two students from Weeroona College to attend the camp which is heldtwice yearly, March and October.

RotaractIs designed for young adults aged between 18 and 30. Rotary’s partner in service, Rotaract is a service club thatorganises projects for the community, both locally and further-a-field. Rotaract and Rotary can both benefit from aclose working relationship as illustrated by the co-operation in our fund raising activities such as the annual swapmeet. With the support of Rotary Club’s in the Bendigo area, Rotaract membership is consolidating after aprolonged period of low numbers.

Siemens Science ExperienceIs a three-day camp for year 10 students with an interest and aptitude for science. The camps are held in severaluniversities during the semester breaks. Two students from Weeroona College are usually sponsored by our clubeach year but unfortunately we did not receive applications for the last camp.

Driver’s SeatIs targeted at young people and focuses on the development of life skills. Discussions have taken place withrepresentations from other clubs in the Bendigo area to gauge interest in the possibility of establishing thisworthwhile program into a joint venture. It is envisaged that the program will become an on-going means ofencouragement and opportunity for young people to be placed in the “Driver’s Seat” of their lives. Progress in re-igniting this program has been delayed, however, we continue to search for a means of making this an annual event.

Festival of Sail – Skandia Geelong WeekThis year our club chose to sponsor a student from Weeroona College, Cameron Fulton, to participate in this excitingevent held over the Australia Day weekend. Students participate in competitive sailing and contribute as acrewmember working within a team environment in the traditional passage race from Williamstown to Geelong. Inexcess of 400 yachts and over 4,000 sailors are attracted to this annual event.

Interact(International Action) The new club has been formed at Weeroona College for students 14 – 18 years under theguidance and enthusiasm of Mr Gary Schroeder, Student Representative Council Coordinator. Now in its secondyears, students continue to be very keen and dedicated having established their committee for future planning. Theclub has received a big thankyou from Kenya for a $600 donation from fundraising to the Karema Well projectwhich has now been installed successfully. A job well done.

Our club is keen to support the development of Interact in the Bendigo area and have commenced discussions withMr Graham Bastian and Rachel Quillinan to expand into Bendigo Senior Secondary. Flora Hill is exploring thebenefits of the Interact Club under the leadership of the Rotary Club of Strathdale. Other opportunities will beinvestigated with Catholic College and Girton Grammer over the next year. Formal chartering of the club will occurin the near future.

National Youth Science ForumStudent participants are selected from those having an interest and achieve high grades in science. Normal processinvolves nominating in the preceding Rotary year to prepare for the interesting and challenging program. In Januarythis year we shared with Rotary Club of Bendigo South in sponsoring Sarah Anton to attend the forum in Canberra.

Lord Somers Camp & PowerhouseOur club was approached in January this year to sponsor Ellie Blackwood to participate in this program which wasa new opportunity for New Generations. The program enjoys a strong reputation for developing self-confidence,teamwork and leadership skills. Ellie attended our meeting afterwards to pass on her experiences and the importanceand effectiveness of this program were clearly illustrated.

Our exchange student for the 2005/06 year was Christoph Meunders. Christoph hails from Hilden, Germany. In hishome town, Christoph is a member of a parliament for young people, and enjoys reading in his spare time. Christophalso enjoys a weekly visit to his local observatory to pursue his interest in astronomy. At school he likes nearly allsubjects but especially politics, geography and chemistry. His school report from Girton Grammar shows that he isindeed a very bright student. His love of chemistry is clearly evident in his very high mark for every aspect of thesubject.

As he prepares to leave Australia on June 19, Christoph expressed his pleasure at being part of the student exchangeprogram and said he enjoyed the experience immensely. Christoph especially liked the safari which took he and hisfellow exchange students from around the globe to some of the delightful locations in N.S.W. Central Australia andQueensland.

A special thank you is extended to our host families. Without them the student exchange program would not happen. This year they were Gary and Julie Handley, Garry and Liz Spence, Colin and Sandra Burns and Alan and MargotSpalding.
