*Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addi-tion, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of absti-nence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may also be taken, but not to equal a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection.

RESPECT LIFE CORNER

The moral problem with abortion is of a pre-religious nature because the genetic code of the person is pre-sent at the moment of conception. This means that a human being already exists. We separate the issue of abortion from any religious concept. It is a scientific issue. To not allow any further progress in the devel-opment of a being that already has the entire genetic

code of a human being is not ethical. The right to life is the first human right. Abortion means killing some-

one who cannot defend himself.

A Letter from Bishop Murphy

2014 Catholic Ministries Appeal Serving God by Serving Others

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In this special season of Lent, the Catholic Ministries Appeal gives each of us an opportunity to join to-gether to support the wonderful work of our Church. I am grateful for the dedication and sacrifice that you and so many of our parishioners have demonstrated in the past by supporting the CMA with an an-nual gift. Each of us in our own way has been blessed by God. The Catholic Ministries Appeal is an opportunity to live the faith we profess; to be Disciples of Christ and good stewards of all that we have received. The Church counts acts of charity as the greatest best sacrifice in Lent. Alms-giving “covers a multitude of sins”. Therefore, I am inviting you to join with me this Lenten season, not only in a spirit of sacrifice, but also in a mutual expression of gratitude. The programs and ministries that are funded by the CMA bring life and meaning to Jesus’ words. Through our gifts, we help those in need - the poor and the vulnerable. Our gifts also demonstrate our commitment to vocations for the priesthood, the diaconate and the consecrated life, religious education and the defense of the unborn. Our generosity strengthens families and enables our various ministries to do good works throughout the year. I ask you to consider prayerfully a meaningful gift to the 2014 Catholic Ministries Appeal. May the Ho-ly Spirit guide you and bestow His graces upon you as together we share our gifts in love and service in the name of Christ Jesus. In the spirit of Lent, I hope that you will join this effort today. With my gratitude and prayers, I am

Yours sincerely in Christ,

Bishop of Rockville Centre

I am writing this at the request of Fr. Benedykt Pączka OFM Cap, who now lives and works at a Catholic mission in Ngoundaye (Central African Republic) who has witnessed many atrocities there. My name is Agata Chojnacka and I am a spokesperson for the events in the CAR in the English language. I remain in constant contact with Father Benedykt and assure that all given information is true.

For the last several weeks, Fr. Benedykt calls on the world to help the mission and the local population. Many have lost their lives and those who survived are in a dramatic situation. Seleka (an alliance of mostly Muslim militia) robbed them of everything they had. They were killing or seriously injuring any people encountered including chil-dren, raping women and burning their possessions.

The war in the CAR is not a religious war as often mistakenly given by media. In this country Christians and Mus-lims are living together as brothers. The missionaries say that there never been any problems between them, it was just the opposite. At the beginning of the rebellion (March 2013) only the Catholic Church was robbed. The rebels stepped into the church during services and were stealing the donations. In time, however, they began to attack the rich Muslims. Seleka are not Muslims who go to the mosque, they are bandits. Certainly, it is therefore a war of interests.

Fr. Benedykt, the Missionaries and all of us are asking for help, because the situation is really dramatic. There is an urgent need for medicines, food, clothing and oil They will need to begin to organize the life of the mission from scratch and they need to rebuild destroyed houses before the rainy season comes (May). Therefore, on behalf of Fr. Benedykt and the Capuchin Friars of CAR, I kindly ask for your support and help.

You can make a donation online through a special module on www.tamtamitu.pl. (This module is available in English too.)

Największe ofiary ponosi miejscowa ludność, a zwłaszcza niewinne dzieci, które pozbawione domu i opieki rodziców, umierają z powodu głodu i chorób. Jedyną nadzieją dla nich jest pomoc misjonarzy. Ciepły

posiłek i bezpieczne schronienie są szansą na przeżycie. Dlatego br. Benedykt i misjonarze kapucyni posługujący w Republice Środkowoafrykańskiej proszą nas o pomoc.
