    1) Daniel Blackburn has been trying to popularize vegetable oil as a fuel for cars, in Britain. He points out that

    vegetable oil is a clean fuel whereas diesel emits pollutants that are harmful for health and contribute to

    global warming.

    2) The diesel engine requires modification if it is to run on cooking oil. Blackburn spent $500 to make his car’s engine compatible with vegetable oil, but he feels it is money spent well.

    3) Blackburn, a Welshman drove across Britain in 2003 to try to persuade people to fill their petrol tanks with

    vegetable oil instead of diesel, and many people in Britain, especially in Wales have taken his advice.

    4) Some have switched to biodiesel, as use of biodiesel does not require modification of the engine. Biodiesel

    can be used by itself or mixed with petro-diesel, in any proportion. It can be made from vegetable oils,

    animal fats or even used oil from kitchen restaurants.

    5) With global warming becoming a cause for concern, and with petroleum reserves diminishing, governments

    all over the world are stepping up research in biodiesel.
